gibsonm
Problem is though that I think you (the US) did.
MikeyD
I've come to the conclusion that we're going about this the wrong way. Forget about 'appropriate' music. That's boring boring. Instead think of 'non sequitor' music in jarring opposition to the game. Think of inspired use of non sequitor music in films. Malcom Macdowell in 'A Clockwork Orange' sings a Fred Estair tune while beating someone, surf music punctuates the mayhem in 'Pulp Fiction'. Forget about 'appropriate' tunes. Imagine how jarring it would be to start the game with the TV theme song to "Petticoat Junction" or the 1973 Jim Croce song "Bad Bad Leroy Brown". Instead of thinking "Ah yes, typical war music opening" the response might be "Woah! This game is truely f••ked! What other crazy stuff do they have in store for me?!"
panzermartin
Lol..you got a point there Mikey. But I guess a contrasting music theme will feel mostly like sarcasm or irony. Starting CMSF with "beautiful world" for instance will sound like anti war propaganda inside a tactical wargame. Now, thats jarring contrast . But, yes, something from the industrial/hard rock genre will sound a bit cliche too. Given the deliberate lack of atmosphere of CM games, I would expect smth like a neutral sounding electro/industrial theme with some oriental elements as well. Heh, I think it's time for a CMvision song contest
TheNathan
How about the Team America theme? No? Ok, how about Butthole Surfers' "Jet Fighter"
gibsonm
Well you of course could use “Montage“ with screenshots as a background. But I’m not aware if CMSF will be in “Supermarionation”.
CorpCommander
I pretty much will be listening to the Team America soundtrack when I am playing this. As for one song that really captures the spirit of the fighting in Iraq and Afganistan? "Down in it" by Nine Inch Nails. The refrain, "I was up above it, now I'm down in it," resonates to the constant use of helicopters in those places. Any other meaning you can read into it yourself. ----------------------------------------------- Going down in it [2] Kinda like a cloud I was up way up in the sky And I was feeling some feelings you wouldn't believe Sometimes I don't believe them myself And I decided I was never coming down Just then a tiny little dot Caught my eye it was just about too small to see But I watched it way too long It was pulling me down I was up above it [2] Now I'm down in it I was up above it [2] Now I'm down in it Shut up! So what, what does it matter now? I was swimming in the haze now I crawl on the ground And everything I never liked about you is kinda seeping into me Try to laugh about it now but isn't it funny how everything works out "I guess the joke's on me," she said I was up above it [2] Now I'm down in it I was up above it [2] Now I'm down in it I used to be so big and strong! I used to know my right from wrong! I used to never be afraid! I used to be somebody! I used to have something inside! Now just this whole that's open wide! I used to want it all! I used to be somebody.. I'll cross my heart I'll hope to die But the needle's already in my eye And all the world's weight is on my back And I don't even know why What I used to think was me Is just a fading memory I looked him right in the eye and said "Goodbye" I was up above it [2] Now I'm down in it [2] I was up above it [2] Now I'm down in it I was up above it [2] Now I'm down in it I was up above it Rain rain go away come again some other day [4x] I was up above it [2] Now I'm down in it ... I was up above it Now I'm down in it

Homo ferricus
i was thinking something more along the lines of "50 Cent" or maybe "LL Cool J", but not if it takes to long to animate club dance moves for US soldiers and Syrian militia. you might also need to skin some female models for said soldiers to "grind on".

Nietzsche
How about something by "Tank"? For example "War Drags Ever On" from the "Honour And Blood"-album surely would set the mood up nicely. In fact, come to think of it, all the tracks sound more or less fitting... http://www.bnrmetal.com/groups/tank.htm
mike_the_wino
Looking through my collection I think that Slipknot's 'Everything Ends', off the Iowa album, has that certain verve.
