Things Peng and I have challenged about

I seem to recall hearing that Dvorak's New World Symphony was written while the composer was visiting friends in Idaho.

I'm glad he didn't name the piece "The Potato Symphony", or

"The Spud Ballet" .

Iowa, I think. Some Moravian community. Or maybe they were Borneo cannibals. Who knows? Not much difference, I suppose. Some god-forsaken part of the flat Midwest.

Wife and I saw Lewis Black live at the oxymoronically named "Scranton Cultural Center" (Culture? in Scranton!?) last night. I nearly wet 'em a couple of times I was laughing so hard. When it all was over I had laugh face. The muscles in my face actually hurt from the workout they got.

If he comes to your town go and see him. You will laugh. A lot. Really.

He used to be a regular on Opie and Anthony when they were on the radio in New York. His voice reminded me of George Carlin, but you're right he is a funny bastard.

Okay, right now, I'm a little...unsettled...

And that's my question to you all tonight, as I sit here longing for the North.

What music would you want to hear, there, on the granite shore of a dark lake, pines all around, and the wind kicking up?

Jack Johnson singing "Times Like These", Anne Nalick singing "Wreck Of The Day", Pink Floyd singing "Wish You Were Here" and finally, The Drive By Truckers singing "Outfit". That last song has some of the neatest little nuggets in it I have ever heard, if you ever get the chance, listen to it.

OUTFIT

You want to grow up to paint houses like me, a trailer in my yard till you're 23

You want to be old after 42 years, keep dropping the hammer and grinding the gears

Well, I used to go out in a Mustang, a 302 Mach One in green.

Me and your Mama made you in the back and I sold it to buy her a ring.

And I learned not to say much of nothing and I figured you already know

but in case you don’t or maybe forgot, I’ll lay it out real nice and slow

Don’t call what your wearing an outfit. Don’t ever say your car is broke.

Don’t worry about losing your accent, a Southern Man tells better jokes.

Have fun but stay clear of the needle. Call home on your sister’s birthday.

Don’t tell them you’re bigger than Jesus, don’t give it away.

Six months in a St. Florian foundry, they call it Industrial Park.

Then hospital maintenance and Tech School just to memorize Frigidaire parts.

But I got to missing your Mama and I got to missing you too.

So I went back to painting for my old man and I guess that’s what I’ll always do

So don’t try to change who you are boy, and don’t try to be who you ain’t.

And don’t let me catch you in Kendale with a bucket of wealthy-man’s paint.

Don’t call what your wearing an outfit. Don’t ever say your car is broke.

Don’t sing with a fake British accent. Don’t act like your family’s a joke.

Have fun, but stay clear of the needle, call home on your sister’s birthday.

Don’t tell them you’re bigger than Jesus, Don’t give it away.

Don’t give it away.

And I consider myself invited to your little shin-dig.

Hey, almost forgot, one more song "Life In A Northern Town" by Dream Academy.

Whats new?

What music would you want to hear, there, on the granite shore of a dark lake, pines all around, and the wind kicking up?

...long before the white man and long before the wheel,

when the green dark forest was to silent to be real,

...and many are the dead men, to silent, to be real.

Good story Steve.

Pfft, song doesn't even mention a snowshovel.

And you're gonna need it today. [/QB]</font>

What song? There's one and only one for your particular scenario ...

The Anaheim, Azusa, And Cucamonga Sewing Circle, Book Review, And Timing Association by Jan and Dean.

It would be perfect ... the only thing that would make it better (and it couldn't be because I just said it was perfect and you can't get better than perfect ... ) never mind then.

Joe

p.s. I'm in Springdale, Arkansas ... go ahead, knock yourselves out.

p.p.s. I had planned to fly home Saturday before I had to fly out again Sunday but instead I spent 11 hours in the Dallas Fort Worth Airport ... 11 hours ... DFW ... so instead of going home I got to stay in a ratty Holiday Inn courtesy of Delta Airlines and then fly to Little Rock on Sunday. Do I know how to party or what?

I've been cheated by you since I don't know when

So I made up my mind, it must come to an end

Look at me now, will I ever learn?

I don't know how but I suddenly lose control

There's a fire within my soul

Just one look and I can hear a bell ring

One more look and I forget everything, w-o-o-o-oh

Mamma mia, here I go again

My my, how can I resist you?

Mamma mia, does it show again?

My my, just how much I've missed you

Yes, I've been brokenhearted

Blue since the day we parted

Why, why did I ever let you go?

Mamma mia, now I really know,

My my, I could never let you go.

I've been angry and sad about things that you do

I can't count all the times that I've told you we're through

And when you go, when you slam the door

I think you know that you won't be away too long

You know that I'm not that strong.

Just one look and I can hear a bell ring

One more look and I forget everything, w-o-o-o-oh

Mamma mia, here I go again

My my, how can I resist you?

Mamma mia, does it show again?

My my, just how much I've missed you

Yes, I've been brokenhearted

Blue since the day we parted

Why, why did I ever let you go?

Mamma mia, even if I say

Bye bye, leave me now or never

mamma mia, it's a game we play

Bye bye doesn't mean forever

Mamma mia, here I go again

My my, how can I resist you?

Mamma mia, does it show again?

My my, just how much I've missed you

Yes, I've been brokenhearted

Blue since the day we parted

Why, why did I ever let you go

Mamma mia, now I really know

My my, I could never let you go
