trfink
Hello I just started dling from this site. I realize that they are providing a good service for the gamers, but the darn thing is so slow. It takes me a good 45 minutes and sometimes up to 2 hour to down a mod at only 1.5 meg. Is there any way to speed things up. I have DSL and my dl speed is normally 2 megs a minute. Thanks for the wonderful games and mods. They are about the only games I am playing now. trfink

I don't even have DSL or Cable, I am just a poor 56k user and I just DL a 3 meg mod in about 20 mins.
trfink
Hi Thanks for the info, MFOS. I realize it does cost money and it seems to work faster at certain times of the day. I download a JagdPanther at 1.50 meg in the late afteroon at less than a KB per minute and I tried again at 10:00PM and was getting 3 kb per minute which would be about 8 1/2 minutes of downloading. I just was remarking that I wish it gould be faster. trfink

[/QB]Im sure he is, Im also on 56dialup and can in my 5 hours (before ISP disonnects me) I can normally get around 75mb. I started this file (SUset) downloading and by the time i was disconnected I had 16mb. (the CMdatabase is normally not this slow by the way) No drama though I use bulletproof and will resume tonight, I just appreciate the service provided by the database.

If you include the 10% overhead for pictures and text, that number jumps to almost 7.4GB! I ran a NETSTAT @ 5:15pm yeserday and had approx. 40 concurrent users all d/ling mods. That's why it's slow. If you think it's bad when it's this slow, think of how it'll be when my ISP shuts me down. With traffic use like this, it won't be long. And don't forget, speed costs $$$ and this site is free. pakfan
That brings up the old problem: ads, banners and pop-ups. I'd rather see some banners on cmmods.com than to see this excellent site shut down! If it helps to finance site and bandwidth, include some banners for Christ's sake!

You might use opera for sites with lots of pop-ups. The browser has an option to 'open pop-ups in background'. That's really helpful...

Even on the best days, all those popups and banners would only generate ~$.70 per day. That's not enough to pay for a connection, not to mention the hassle it would put the users through. Unless a site is generating 500k hits per month, there's no way to make the advertising pay for website. We've been down this road before and the consensus was that people would rather have nothing than have to pay for something. Sad, but true... MG-42
Hi Cog, I'm just thinking on the fly here but as your providing such a valauble service to the community, is there a remote possibility that you could host CMMODS on Battlefront's servers. Have a word with them..nothing to lose but everything to gain. Kindest MG
trfink
Hi I did not mean to imply that I wasn't greatful for the database because I am. I don't know much about the internet execpt that its there when I turn on my computer and seems to work. I just thought that there might be away to speed things up without it costing too much money. I am disabled and home bound and at the present these games are my only enjoyment and I want to enhance them in every way possible. I look forward to every new mod that is released and wish to get them as soon as possible trfink

The message I was trying to get across to everyone is that this is the best it's gonna get. The next level is to somehow generate enough income to pay for a seperate box and ISP connection ($1000 for new box, min $900/yr for ISP). Also, I just don't have the time or energy to dedicate to it. I do have a real job and a life outside of CM. I'm glad you're getting what you want out of it. That's why it's here. MikeyD
Usually the site's a breeze. You may have hit heavy traffic because an unnamed modder (you know who you are, MrNoobie) put a great Soviet SU pack up for us all to download. That's 'great' in both senses of he term, fantastic-great and really really big-great!

I have been also saying this for some time. The one trouble I see is file naming convention, in 99% of cases I rename the files to something that means something (to me, eg "PzIIIM(early)-winter-fred.zip") and hence the file becomes pretty much un-sharable. I like a well organised directory. The kazaa idea, I think, is inevitable however.
tracer
Well as far as the "Pop Ups" go to www.cnet.com and get the "Pop Up Stopper" program. And I have noticed that the site has been slowing down a bit on downloads, maybe because there is a heck of a lot of uplaoding being done with the CMMOS mods??. I thought that was a Battlefront deal, and those would be located at "Combat HQ", don't get me wrong, I don't admin either of the sites, but I think that the "Combat HQ" site is affiliated with Battle Front and they flip the bill for this site,(I could be wrong about this, I just read in the forum that battle front had the HQ) and it does download a lot faster then the data base. The CM Database is one kick ass site as far as mods are concerned, and Cog has done one heck of a job getting up and keeping it running, and as most of us know, it takes money to make the web sites work
ColumbusOHGamer
Thanks for the support guys. It's nice to hear sometimes. If you've been waiting to d/l something becuase the site is slow, go try it now. I'm getting 34k bps connection at work. It's screaming now. Could also be my ISP. They said they were going to add more bandwidth. Also, as someone else mentioned, it was VERY busy the past couple days. Noobie's 18MB mods probably had something to do with that. Anyway, I'm going to keep it up as long as I have a connection. As for Kazaa, you might want to search the board for more info. I thought someone had tried this already. There was some sort of byte limit or something. COG
vedder
Well a good solution is to use Direct Connect and set up a HUB for sharing mods. Check out http://www.neo-modus.com for the software. This would ensure us to have a nice place where everyone can download in one room and also chat to each other. It's like irc + kazaa. Also, we can make the room password protected so only forum members can register for it and share, eliminating some creeps sharing child pornography and stuff.
MeatEtr
people would rather have nothing than have to pay for something. Sad, but true... COG Yes it is true. Im curious whats gonna happen when the site does eventually get shutdown. Don't think some folks realize how important this site is. Ex Bellator
I am very curious why BFC do not seem to want to take a proactive approach to the modding community any more? Back in the halcyon early days of CMBO CMHQ was a hive of activity, with most mods getting hosted there and almost daily updates. Then a few other great sites began hosting mods, Matt became fully involved with BFC, Superted had other priorities, and the updates became less frequent over at CMHQ. Now aside from the occasional CMMOS release (and it looks like we've had the last of them) there's barely any point going there at all. It seems that BFC have got into the habit of assuming that the Mod community takes care of itself, possibly they think that if COG's site finishes another will take it's place. It's annoying to think of COG struggling to keep his site afloat on a shoestring when all that BFC paid for bandwidth is sitting there going to waste. Most people (including BFC) would agree that Mods and Scenarios are vital to the continuing success and longevity of the CM series, and I think that it's time for BFC to step back into the arena and actively help their customers who wish to continue to support this great game.
MrNoobie
ive always wondered, was the modding community this active back then with CMBO or was it just about the same. i think CM HQ should just host the CMMOS'ed version of the mods.
Vergeltungswaffe
The modding community was at least as active. I think there were more actual people doing mods, then, as well. Also, there were far fewer bmp's to be modded, so whole sets of vehicles, etc, were a far less daunting prospect than all the models we have now.
