You're right, the Mod replaces the original file. But you can look at the filenames of the mod and backup the files from your original, or use a mod manager, or backup the whole bmp folder if you like

Ever tried to unrar the BMPs from your original CD and the patch files? That could keep your mailbox from bursting... Simply use WinRAR, and you'll get all the BMPs. Or simply reinstall to another directory...

You can use the compression software winrar to open the installation exe and copy single files. Look at http://www.winrar.de/ to get the software.
