John Kettler
Domestic assault isn't fun, but it has effects wholly unanticipated, such as decoupling from the Forum, via both trauma and loss of Internet connection, triggering the dread IWS (Internet Withdrawal Syndrome). The latter has been marginally addressed to date, with a major fix in progress. Now, you'd think that with all this time free of the myriad distractions of the Internet, I would've been tearing it up in CMBN, but that's not the case. Funny thing about trauma..it's traumatic! That, in turn, seems to, for reasons unknown, disrupt the multiple perceptual paths, among them the spatial relationship path, vital to playing the game. Happily, it hasn't affected my writing, allowing me to have nearly completed my third E-book. After numerous false starts on playing a CMBN scenario, I decided to have a peek at the QB generator. Either it's opaque in design, I'm missing something or both. This was my first look at CMx2 QBs, and the force selection approach seems nightmarish. A whole formation or a onesie? Really? And the force selections at low point totals seem ludicrous. Or do you all commence an armored assault routinely with HMCs when on a Medium Armor setting? I don't get it. I'm hoping such skills as I developed for playing this game haven't withered away, but only time will tell. Meanwhile, I see CMFI is soon to have Gustav Line. You go away for a bit over a month, only to find huge change. Sheesh! Regards, John Kettler

Michael Emrys
Hi John, Glad to see your health has at least partially returned. About force selection in QBs: The way I go about it is to purchase an entire unit (usually but not always a battalion in strength) and then eliminate the parts I don't want to use in the battle. I may then go on to do the same thing with another unit, or with individual vehicles or sub-units until I have the mix I desire. It's a little odd at first, especially if one comes as we do from a CMx1 background. But once you get the hang of it, it is very logical even if a bit cumbersome. John Kettler
Michael Emrys, Thanks! I couldn't get the QB generator to so much as display the subunits, which might explain my utter perplexity. Sounds clunky to me, even when it works! womble
After numerous false starts on playing a CMBN scenario, I decided to have a peek at the QB generator. Either it's opaque in design, I'm missing something or both. You're missing something. It's a little bit unintuitive, but really not that hard. A whole formation or a onesie? Really? You have to start with one or more formations, but see the "delete" button? You can (and often must) trim off entire companies with one click, until you have what you want for the core of your force, then add "specialist teams" and "single vehicles". And the force selections at low point totals seem ludicrous. Or do you all commence an armored assault routinely with HMCs when on a Medium Armor setting? I don't get it. You mean the "suggestions"? Yeah, they're FUBAR. There is no "Medium Armour" setting. Infantry, Mech Inf, Armor Only, Mix and Random are your choices. Paying attention to what you're looking at often leads to better discovery of how it actually works.
Doug Williams
After numerous false starts on playing a CMBN scenario, I decided to have a peek at the QB generator. It takes a bit of getting used to, but isn't that bad once you do. Say you want a platoon of infantry with one sherman attached. Buy an infantry batallion, delete everything but one company, then delete all the platoons but the one you want. You don't even have to keep the company HQ. Now select the platoon you kept, select single vehicles (instead of formations) and Armor on the left menu, and buy the sherman you want. It will be under the command of that platoon HQ. After you use it a while, it becomes easier. If you allow the AI to select it's own forces in a Tiny or Small QB, expect to see some strange results, especially if you tell it Mixed forces. I've taken to selecting the forces for the AI in smaller QBs. Of course, PBEM is where the game really shines, IMO.
Hister
Welcome back John. I haven't used QB much - enemy AI always gets those assets put on strange places. I don't like it.

noob
Attack of the psycho roomie. Bad juju! Film at 11. You are mimicking Jerry Westerby, the main character in the novel "The Honourable Schoolboy", which is the second volume in the Karla Trilogy by John Le Carre, am i correct JK ? p.s. The audio version of the Karla Trilogy read by David Jayston is superb, as is the BBC's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

Doug Williams
Domestic assault isn't fun [snip]. Regards, John Kettler Since you decided to post this information in this open forum, I have a question. Who assaulted you? Wife? Boyfriend? I am asking this with no intent to disparage your lifestyle choices. When one chooses to make their personal life public, one accepts the inevitable questions.
