Halmbarte got a reaction from Alternativeway in you can kill T64s w/Dragon!
As it turns out you can kill T64s w/Dragon! All it takes is a hit in the right place. In this case, the rear deck.
The ammo didn't go up immediately, it took a few seconds to fully cook off.

I am too, but I know it'll probably be a bad as the M60 vs the Sov stuff.

Yeah, I started looking more closely & taking T55s more seriously after a scenario where the T55s were getting 1st round hits & killing my M48s w/HEAT while the M48s were doing the one round over, one round under, fire for effect shuffle and dying.

Halmbarte reacted to Centurian52 in Attack vs Defense casualty rate?
Having a numerical advantage will tend to reduce your casualties. Like Halmbarte said the Allies had an overwhelming firepower advantage. That comes both from them having more artillery, but on top of that a large portion of the battle of Normady takes place within naval gun range of the coast. The Allies also have almost complete air superiority. By this point in the war Allied troops are all superbly well trained, while the quality of German units is becoming far more mixed. Basically I don't think WW2 was still really a peer vs peer war by 1944 anymore, but had shifted to a near-peer war to the advantage of the Allies.
So yes, all else being equal the attacker will take more casualties than the defender. But all else was not equal.

Halmbarte reacted to Centurian52 in Target Arcs and spotting
Facing effects spotting, in that a unit will spot better to their front. Your units focus greater attention to their front than in any other direction. And target arcs effect facing (your units will generally face towards the center of a target arc command). But how wide or narrow the target arc is will have absolutely no effect on spotting. There is no inherent bonus to spotting enemy units inside the arc vs outside the arc. Your units will not focus greater attention inside the arc vs outside the arc. They will probably be more likely to spot enemy units inside the arc, but only because enemy units inside the arc will tend to be to your units' front.

Halmbarte got a reaction from George MC in Which is better, the Bren or MG42? A debate almost as old as the weapons themselves
I think the best answer to the debate is that the MG42 is still being manufactured and in service (as the MG3). Plus the whole GPMG class of weapon introduced by the MG34 and MG42 is used by every army in the world while mag loaded LSWs are not.

Leaving aside the details of the LOS armor (or would it be armour?) and the gun caliber, I was more going for the tactical impact of the Chieftain.
The gun is going to struggle against T64s, and it is going to die from frontal shots from Sov 115mm or better guns (and probably 100mm HEAT from T55s).

Day 1 buy for me. Perhaps in the future we can see Norway with local forces and USMC. Maybe even the Southern NATO front with the Greek and Turk forces fighting alongside NATO.

Like they say, one exploding AFV, shame on you. Three burning AFVs shame on me.
Sometimes, recon by death is how the job gets done. But, have someone on overwatch. Then pull up to the previous terrain feature and kick some boots out* to go have a look.
Recon takes time, but it's usually well worth it.

Halmbarte got a reaction from Sgt Joch in Tips for playing Soviets?
My notes for using Sov tactics to beat the Germans/NATO in RT/CW:
Time spent on recon is never wasted.
Time and resources spent killing enemy recon is never wasted.
Have a plan and execute it.
The artillery fire plan supports the maneuver plan. The maneuver plan dictates the fire plan and these must be mutually supportive.
A company of Sov tanks spots better than any single German/NATO tank. If you're fighting a 1:1 tank duel you're doing it wrong.
Take away the better spotting offered by the German/NATO tanker habit of fighting unbuttoned. Get them heads down to decrease their situational awareness.
When you attack, attack! Don't poke him with one finger at a time. Make a fist and crush the enemy with overwhelming force.
Use a platoon to crush a squad > use a company to crush a platoon >> use a battalion to crush a squad. Fair fights are for suckers.
Keep pressing attacks until they aren't feasible anymore, but don't reinforce failure. The Germans/Americans never have enough troops/tanks.
Just because you have mass doesn't mean the only way forwards is a frontal assault. There are other ways to win that don't involve sticking your dick into the meat grinder until it jams. Recon routes that bypass the enemy, the Germans/NATO never have enough troops/tanks to cover every avenue of approach. Infantry infiltration is a thing.
AT if you're playing the Sov:
RT: Your best AT weapon is your tanks. Your infantry doesn't have any good AT weapons outside of close assault. Use your infantry to get spots on enemy tanks and relay that info to the tanks. Don't be afraid to dismount tank crews so they can push forward and get their own spots. On the attack push AT guns forward to support the enemy.
CW: RPGs will knock out a M60 from the front. Your man portable ATGMs (>AT3s) are even more scary. Use infiltration tactics to get the ATGMs forward into range to support attacks. Make sure to protect the carriers since they are stuffed with reloads and make big boom if hit.
Take your time, don't be in a rush to die. You'll probably run out of people, tanks, and/or ammo before you run out of time.

    Urban warfare:
Don't move in the streets. Mouseholing is optimum, then back gardens, then alleyways. Stay out of the streets. Use supporting weapons to create mouseholes and gaps in walls.
Don't go in through the front door. If you can arrange it start at the top and clear down.
Suppress every building that has line of sight to your maneuvering force. If you can't suppress or smoke it don't move that way.

My take on using the combat recon patrol is you’re supposed to make contact with the enemy. Sometimes your lead vehicle is going to die doing that.

When I’m doing recon with the Sov my vehicles are unbuttoned. I’m supposed to be seeing, and unbuttoned is way better for doing that. If I need to get intel dismounted, and I have time to do that, I’ll go that way.

My take is the Sov tactics are about results: Hit the enemy at weak points with fresh troops that keep arriving in waves until you overcome resistance n break through. If your regimental commander is an idiot this can look like trying to jam a meat grinder by feeding it your arm into it.

Yeah. You can get away with it against the AI. But they're almost always one of the firs things I shoot at. One of the lesson's from Monty Python's "How Not To Be Seen" is that you shouldn't hide behind the only bush in the field.

I suspect you're right. If thicker armor can't keep out typical threats why bother dragging it around?  More weight brings significant penalties to the entire AFV, both tactically and logistically.

If I think the M60 is slow I'll have a new low point when we get Chieftain? At least drivetrain reliability isn't modeled in CM.
I do find it interesting both the Sov and UK arrived at opposed piston MBT engines, although they oriented them differently.

My problem is I frequently run short of distractions to entertain the enemy with as they my distractions seem to get big holes punched in them and/or explode.
Playing the US w/early M60s kinda sucks. They are huge, the ammo struggles against anything better than a T62, the armor is vulnerable to RPG7s from the front, and they are slow.
I'm Playing Meet & Greet right now and my best anti-armor weapon is TOW, but even those struggle to get thru the T64 from the front. My M60A1s have not had a great day of it, but you use the units you've got, not the ones you wish for.
To be honest, I'm expecting Centurion and Chieftain to be similar to how the M60 plays, although I hope that the 120mm can actually get thru a T64 from the front.
