Wiggum15 got a reaction from E4Grunt in What kind of engine improvements do you expect from the Bulge game ?
    Yes.

I use this mod but why has everything get modded into a 55$ game ?
If it would be 10$ i would not care.

As someone pointed out even the scenarios get donated to BFC.
I know small team, no money, niche games. But i expect some quality from a 55$ game, especially when its no "proof of concept" or other rare stuff. CMx2 had 8 years to evolve into a quality product.
Just look what Kieme(ITA) did with the distance ground textures, with his mod it looks 100 times better. BFC needs to step it up a bit.
Or take the sounds, someone pointed out they use sounds from the CMx1 era.

    Hi !

What kind of engine improvements do you expect from the Bulge game ?
Do you wish that the performance and loading times get fixed ?

On my list are these technical and engine improvements:

    - Overall Better Performance
    - Reduce the loading times dramatically
    - Get rid of all the old graphic glitches
    - The ability to save turns as "replays"
    - Fix the wind effect

    - Use road command
    - The ability for infantry to use differend spacings and formations
    - Better/reworked (not so ugly) trenches and foxholes (a must-have for bulge)
    - TacAI improvements for example better panic behavior
    - Finally fix the use of bridges
    - Real Deep snow terrain with a effect on tanks and vehicles
    - Reworked UI that makes use of modern FullHD 16/9 screens
    - Better Night combat effects and features like flares

What do you think, what real new features and fixes to you expect from the Bulge game ?
Oh, and why cant i start a poll anymore ?

I agree with your points 100%

Would like to see longer suppression and more surrendering soldiers than dead soldiers.

And deep snow could work like a water if it's possible, somehow. Dense, white water.

Wiggum15 got a reaction from A Canadian Cat in When should BFC start to develop a CMx3 engine ?
Ok, enough of this, back to topic.

Since we are already talking BFC's business model...
They choose to sell their so called "engine upgrades" and not to release them as a free patch/upgrade.
Now, why did they not update the old scenarios/campaigns with the (big) new feature...AI triggers ?
I think its kind of lazy from them and i was really disappointed to see they dont updated the scenarios.
Yes it takes time, but again, they SELL this stuff and dont give it away for free !
And dont explain it with multiplayer compability, the old versions of the scenarios would still be abvaiable.

Ah, so you say they are silently monitoring the forum ?
As a small developer team with a small community they need to be much more active.
I say it again. Where are they active in discussions about the engine, where do they responde to critique ?
Where do they answer to technical problems ?

Fact, they rarely do. How can you sugarcoat that ?

All you have to do is go under his profile and look at what he has voted on, it list all his own comments.

Anyway, he has stopped that now, so note, no more plus +1 on almost everything he post.

...i actually think the fanboys and yes-sayers are irrelevant, to much of them here, CM will never improve that way.
BFC could release utter trash or just a reskinned version of CMSF as CMSF 2.0 and you would go ape**** about it.
They can not answer questions or bug reports for months and nobody sees a problem with that.

Yeah, with the current badly optimized engine my "vaunted computer would fry or more likely just simply hang".
Stop telling everybody about those "magic" AI process thats soooooo demanding on your CPU and all those bullets pew...luckely i can play ArmA3 with high setting with 40 FPS...
If i shoot mortar rounds at a enemy APC it will just sit there as long as it is not hit...although there are impacts in 25m distance...
Vehicles are to stupid to use roads and pathfinding is horrible...is that also part of the "magic" AI process thats so demanding ?

I know and i was one of those guys who screamed for FOW trenches. But what we got is way worse...the current representation of trenches and foxholes as ugly "units" is awful.
A workaround due to engine limitations...nothing more.

    - drones
Invisible, maybe just a F16 with another sound file, i cant be to much work if you have aircraft fire already modeled ingame

    - mgs fire random numbers of bullets now
Believe it or not, for me thats just a minor change, something a coder does in one or two hours.

    - precision artillery
is just a shell without to much dispersion, i doubt that this was much work...

    - anti air craft fire
Its just something firing into the air, planes are invisible so it could be as simple as a randomly generated number. If that number is >x then the plane was hit...minor change

    - editor improvements
Using the editor is still a pain in the a**. But yeah at least they tried to improve it a bit. But still its not user friendly or straightforward.

    - mg fire being more effective in general but most speficially against infantry.
Again, just change a few variables, do some testing and you have it...a minor improvement that is a basic thing to include into a patch

    - In door firing of rocket weapons
Again, most likely just a small code change and some testing, minor change
    Like:
    If _weapon == "RPG" then {allowfirefrominsidebuilding = false} else {allowfirefrominsidebuilding = true}

    - flame weapons
Only avaiable in RT, this was already present in CMx1

The Bulge game will use the same germans (+ a few new tanks and textures) like we already have in CMBN and CMRT.
The Bulge game will use the "flat" snow tile and weather "graphic effects" from CMFI
The Bulge game will use the US forces we already have in CMBN and its addons (+ a few new tanks and textures)
The Bulge game will have the flame weapons and tank riders from RT
The Bulge game will have mostly the same TO&E as CMBN with some additions and changes
The Bulge game will have new scenarios

Please tell me, from your perspective, what the big "new" feature of the next full price CMx2 game ?

You could get excited about CMBS a bit because it finally got back into modern warfare and had a current event as background) but now we are back to WW2 with the Bulge game which will feel/play just like CMBN,CMFI,CMRT.
No game changing new feature, the same recycled assets, 8 year old engine quirks and graphic issues...

Sorry, if you dont see how infantry formation (correctly implemented) could enhance the CM gameplay then you clearly have a problem with your imagination.

No, it would just show that Steve refused to sell a great game or feared that it would outshine their own CM series someday.

    @ Kieme(ITA)

Sorry, i like you and your Mods but what you wrote about the FPS thing is trash. Lacroix is 100% correct !
If your PC is 3 or 4 times as powerful as the "Suggested" requirements and you still only get stuttering 25 FPS (with drops below 15 FPS) on big Maps then something is wrong.
If you can start ArmA3, load the biggest possible island and drink a coffee in the time it takes CM to load a medium-big scenario then something is wrong !
This game, lets face it, is just very poorly optimized, thats all !
Why are you defending BFC about that ? I cant understand it...

After having upgraded to a new laptop I finally can play everything at highest settings. The game looks really good (except the coloring, which I would prefer to be more artistic and less natural, but that's not a problem of the engine).
So from the GFX point of view, I don't see the necessity of another engine.

But what I do not like at all and where I wholeheartedly agree, is the very slow development of the engine. Every little improvement takes years. I don't know if that's the result of a spaghetticoded engine or if the programmers are doing other things, but if the slow development is engine related, then I would say that a new engine is needed:
I find it inacceptable that after such a long time assignable hotkeys for units still are not stored with savefiles, for example. Or that anitaliasing stops working when swithcing on the beautiful movie coloring. Or that it's still not possible to create half cover arc circles or that the campaign system is consisting only of independent battles and that they only can be played against the AI. BFC says they have so many ideas, but the development of the game engine does not reflect that but to me looks more like a vacuum of ideas.

CMx2 is getting pretty long in the tooth imo. It's getting harder and harder to be excited about new releases. It's pretty much to the point of oh wow, another title with the same recycled assets we've been seeing/hearing for nearly a decade, and the same engine/gameplay quirks we have to deal with. However, I don't think we'll see a CMx3 any time soon. I think we'll actually get to see DCS EDGE/Nevada released before we see a CMx3.
