Another view is to flip this around and ask why wouldn't they have been working on the patch this whole time?
It's been 2 years and 3 months now since they broke some pretty fundamental parts of their own game -- broken to the point that many people can barely enjoy the typical stock scenario. And not just one title broken, but all of them.
When the issues with v4 were first brought to light, I would have never believed that it'd still be almost literally years before we saw them fixed.
Perhaps Battlefront needs to start actually paying more testers and content creators, in order to get things moving along, instead of relying on the generosity of so many volunteers?
I've defended Battlefront and heaped praise on the game many times over the past 4 to 5 years, but at some point a customer's patience and good will just gets used up.
"Niche market" is no excuse for a fix to the underlying game engine to have taken this long.

Arty I could live without but in the game I was playing troops jumped out of a trench when being fired on by machine guns - and they were not broken or panicking.  Machine guns in general is something that is hard to play a CM game without.

sttp reacted to DzrtFox in Download/Reinstall Process
I just completed a motherboard/CPU/memory upgrade in my machine and after reinstalling Windows, am attempting to re-download and install the BFC products I've purchased over the past few years.  I thought I'd share my experience doing this because it has been an exercise in frustration and it would be nice if this process was revamped at some point in the near future.
First, the good...  Red Thunder and Black Sea downloaded and installed without a hitch.  I was able to download and activate these without any issues via one Order Detail screen apiece.  It was slightly confusing as to which files I needed to download until I realized I could check the checkbox in the upper-left corner for the Windows files and download them all in one .zip file.
BARBAROSSA TO BERLIN -- I purchased this in 2016 and when I attempt to download it, I am told that I've exceeded the maximum number of download requests.  I only remember downloading this twice in the 3 years since I purchased it.
BATTLE FOR NORMANDY -- I purchased this when it was still Engine 1 then later purchased the Engine 3 upgrade as well as the Commonwealth/Market Garden bundle.  I assumed I would need to download and install these in order to prevent issues.  I attempted to download Engine 1 using the link in the Order Detail, and got the message "The webpage at (url Removed) might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address."  I attempted to download the Commonwealth/Market Garden bundle and received the same message.  Using the link from the Upgrade 3 Order Detail, I was able to successfully download the installer.  For some reason it downloaded much slower than CMRT and CMBS, but at least it downloaded.  I ran the installer and noticed it defaulted to my My Documents folder for some reason (not a huge deal but just pointing it out). After installing, I attempted to activate my Engine 1 key and was told "Invalid serial number".  Used the Engine 3 upgrade key and it worked.  Entered my CW/MG key and it said that activation was successful, but when I run the game all of the CW battles are grayed out, saying I need to purchase the Commonwealth module to play those.
FORTRESS ITALY -- I purchased this at Engine 2 then later purchased the Engine 3 upgrade.  Attempting to download from the URL in either Order Detail gives the message "The webpage at (url Removed) might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address."
SHOCK FORCE -- I bought the original via GamersGate then bought the retail upgrade to 1.21 through BFC and later bought the Marines/British Force bundles (also through BFC).  Attempting to download any of the files I get my favorite message ""The webpage at (url Removed) might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address."
TL;dr -- After hours spent sifting through Order Details and trying to figure out which files to download and which keys to activate, I have 2-2/3 of the six games I bought ($341) working.  Compare this to the twelve games I bought through Matrix that I downloaded and installed via one convenient page with all of the download links and serial numbers in one place.  I love Combat Mission and think you guys make fantastic games, but this process is complete and utter garbage.
Also, I mentioned a few months ago about issues with the password reset in the forums not working.  I had to reset my password AGAIN to come make this post, then after typing it all up I hit "Submit Topic" and was told that I needed to be logged in to make a post.  Attempted to login using the password I JUST RESET, and it wouldn't work.  I had to reset it again just to come copy & paste this.

Oh, they stop and hunker down when they take incoming fire. I think you might be confused by the fact that squads sometimes do not realize that they are taking fire in CM, even though sound and graphical effects indicate to you as a viewer that they are.
No, I'm not confusing anything. Look, test this out, it's very simple. CM has had this feature since BtB. It behaves exactly as it did back then.
Yes, the cornering mechanic, but they're supposed to position at the corner indicated by the face command, not the corner which the face command points away from. From the manual: "If you only wish to man one corner and not the other, give the team or squad a facing command angled slightly towards the corner you want, and away from the one you don't.". That's not really the issue I had in mind though. The problem is that they are repositioning to an action spot on the other side of the wall. It didn't have any bad consequences in this example, but in the first one it did. I do suspect that there might be some overlap of issues here.
    Yes: https://ufile.io/tx7n7
Well, like I said, the Hunt command normally does not behave like that and is not supposed to behave like that. They're supposed to hide, not open fire. Hunker down, not reposition. I don't think they're displaced in the sense of self-preservation. They are reevaluating cover based on either the face command being reached at the end of the command chain or new information popping up. Or both. That causes the unit to erroneously think that it needs to move to the other side of the wall, just as in the second example I gave.
No worries, thanks for acknowledging the issue. I will hold back further reports until I have tested the new patch.
Well, according to the manual Crawling soldiers tend to pause and return fire at nearby/ exposed enemy troops often, then resume moving. That's not really what I wanted here, especially since there are tanks in the background and infantry often open fire on tanks. I've found that a crawling soldier is often a soon-to-be dead soldier in this game. I rarely use it. I guess what I could have done was to issue a Target Arc command, but it seems that if they ignore the Hide command, they will ignore the Target Arc command as well.

    Hello Gentlemen
I had hoped to delay the announcement of this until the new CMMODS site was 100% finished and all the mods uploaded however due to circumstances I am pulling the announcement forward to... well now.
After recent discussions between GreenAsJade and Battlefront it has been decided to relocate the CMMODSIII site to fall under the umbrella of The Few Good Men where The Proving Grounds and The Scenario Depot already reside.
To this end work has begun on moving the modifications currently hosted at CMMODSIII to their new home at CMMODS IV.  As you can imagine this is a major job and will take a few weeks.  CMMODSIII will remain open until the full transfer has taken place so for now I request that no new mods be uploaded to CMMODSIII.
Within the next few days CMMODS IV will be opening the requests section for folk interested in becoming Creators (formerly Authors) and at this time the new upload process will be implemented.  This will be under the Instructions section of the new website but I will post in this thread to keep you all in the loop.
A few points about the new website worth mentioning... all files will now be held in cloud storage so even a catastrophic website crash will not impact any loss of modifications.  All files from the old CMMODSIII site will be relisted and recently with the help of @Erwin I have acquired approx. just shy of 300GB of modifications with quite a few that slipped through the net between the Repository and CMMODSIII transfer over 3 years ago.  So as you can imagine Im going to be very busy over the next few weeks.
Please do not subscribe to the new CMMODS IV just yet or you will be inundated with copious amounts of uploads... I think I uploaded over 100 today... you really don't want that many notification emails dropping in your inbox anytime soon!
In closing I want to thank Martin for all his sterling work over the years keeping CMMODS running and it's an honour to pick up the gauntlet where he left off.
Without further ado, here is the new site, still a work in progress but getting their quickly.

Other than the artillery issues which will hopefully be improved by the forthcoming patches, the biggest casualty producer in the game, to me, is the time limits and the overall aggressiveness of troops. It's really easy to get your troops killed by failing to scout and by making contact with too large a group of your men. If you use scout teams and move methodically, you will avoid running whole squads into kill zones. Your troops will happily barge forward into the kill zones if you order them to. The challenge then becomes dealing with the clock. If you've only got two hours to take an objective, you may have to press forward faster than historically would have been the case most of the time, and the result will be higher casualties.
I don't think these are necessarily flaws (the game is already pretty sedately paced even with these design decisions), but it helps to keep in mind when you're comparing to historical casualty figures that CMx2 makes it a challenge to really take your time with many of the scenario timers, and the willingness of basically all troops to charge aggressively forward (until they start taking hits) will let you get them killed pretty easily!

Yikes you are correct. I totally miss-understood.
Now that I'm clued in - thanks @Bulletpoint I have a question: do we have clarity that these are actually seen as roads with a new angle by the engine? If they are still a jagged road in the game engine's treatment then this is worse than leaving the jagged road in because vehicles will travel off, on, off, on in terms of the engine but look like they are on a road in terms of the visual. Or if it is treated as grass then the speed will not match with what is expected and wet ground conditions will also give a false sense of being safe on the road.

Actually, it doesn't have to be that rigid.  I would have thought a commonsense task is to test each scenario with modules removed.  It seems like there are a number of testers and that would seem to be the most basic test and one of the first tests that should be run.  Someone built the scenarios, someone, I am hoping,  ran it at least once.  Have that person run it with base module and keep adding modules until it works.  Also, that is one of those things that a good QA program would have automated fairly easily.  No one has to sit there and run each one, but it wouldn't hurt.  A fairly simple iterative program could be built to automate that for any combinations of modules if BFC gives someone access to setting DRM licenses.
If you wanted more manual intervention, I would also imagine that BFC has or could easily build an OOB list of each scenario and a master list with an attribute being module.  Just manually or automatically run a compare.  This is one of those easy productivity tools that costs an hour upfront and saves 10 hours immediately and maybe 100 hours down the road patching.  I've seen it, done it, and felt the pain.
Again, I'll point out that you build a beta organization of people running and configuring the product many different ways.  I would have assumed that one category was different module configs.  If you don't, you end up issuing hotfixes and taking a couple years to issue patches.  I'm not sure what is happening behind the scenes at BFC, but the patching process is taking longer and the quality of the releases has slipped significantly over the years.

It is what it is and I am looking forward to the major patch and then I might find my mojo to play some more, but like others I have had quite some time not playing, waiting for the patch...
I hope SF2 keeps them afloat to do some more in 2019...
Now to get dressed and see if Santa has been here...
    Happy Christmas
