  1. I have an anecdote that maybe fits in this thread. I was playing the scenario Linking Up & Breaking Out as the Germans. The battle was winding down when I ambushed a Cromwell on the north-south street north of the main east-west road. It's an area pretty bad for a tank, because it's mostly surrounded by houses. The first part of the ambush was a Jagdpanzer IV, which was hiding around a corner when the Cromwell came into view. The Cromwell survived 2 front armor penetrations from the 75mm gun on the IV, both at a range of about 30-40 meters. The Cromwell then returned fire with its main gun. After 3 hits, it damaged the IV's main gun, and the IV retreated out of LOS. While this was going on, two separate panzerschreck teams were firing at the Cromwell, one from the rear quadrant, and one from the right quadrant (of the Cromwell). The tank was quickly immobilized, but survived a total of 5 panzerschreck hits to various areas. It had swung its turret around to fire at the right quadrant team when the rear quadrant team knocked it out with a sixth rocket. Probably my favorite incident so far from CMBN.
  2. That's been my impression as well, although I don't have any objective data to support it.
  3. You could try: http://www.comandosupremo.com/ That's where I go first for Italian WW2 stuff.
  4. Does the time delay command work with hide? It strikes me that that would be effective, but I don't recall ever having tried it. In other words, pause 15 seconds then unhide.
  5. That's why we need a foliage spray gun tool in the editor, one with flexible parameters for tree and bush types and density.
  6. I'd settle for importing a greyscale image into the editor for use as a height map.
  7. I started this as a new thread because I didn't want to hijack the official texture problem thread, where mention was made of decals for rank insignia on uniforms. Decals are of course a goal for the future with CMBN, but it got me thinking it might be a handy feature if, in addition to decals, the game could apply a tint to each individual uniform. By doing that you could simulate color shade differences from manufacture and wear-and-tear (and potentially other things as well) using only a single base texture. Since the texture file for a uniform is around 3mb, it would save a lot of space and bandwidth. Just a thought.
  8. I thought it might be intentional, but I figured I'd report it anyway. I'll make a couple of variations in my LW uniform set so the senior officers don't look like clones.
  9. German Luftwaffe Jägerbattailon Standard NCOs (all, as far as I know, but I may have missed some) using regular enlisted uniforms In the battalion HQ unit, both the leader and the assistant use the same "senior officer" uniform.
  10. I've noticed that non-officer squad leaders tend to use uniform textures with higher numbers. You can make them appear that way (by making the NCO uniform number 5 or 6), but it's imperfect because a few other random soldiers will get NCO uniforms too. You will find out soon! I have to finish the officer uniforms, which shouldn't take too long, and then do some normal maps. That will probably take a little longer.
  11. I've been working on some luftwaffe uniforms, and it seems the NCO textures don't appear in the game. Guys who are NCOs just get regular soldier uniforms. Anyone else noticed this, or is it just me? NOTE: I have not upgraded to 201 yet, so that may fix the problem.
  12. No problem. Hopefully I'll figure out a more detailed explanation in the future. There's probably a way to configure GIMP (or whatever) to prevent this from happening in the first place.
  13. The "blue uniform" problem has something to do with the way certain programs save color data. When I save a texture with GIMP, for example, I get the blue shift, but if I open it up in Photoshop and re-save it, the blue shift goes away. I haven't delved more deeply into it than that, unfortunately, but it's easy to fix.
  14. Silhouettes, bars, and charts are well and good, but you'll never learn it like you'll learn it from seeing it in the game. There are all sorts of little effects you'll come to appreciate, like degradation to optics, damage to external grenade launchers, etc.
  15. For a new player, I would advise learning which vehicles are vulnerable -- and invulnerable or nigh-invulnerable -- to which kinds of enemy fire. For example, while the M2 .50 cal. will rip through most german armored cars in short order, the 232 series, including the Puma, can withstand it quite easily as long as you keep the front armor pointed forward (turn your flank toward it and you're still dead, of course). Knowing that sort of thing is extremely useful when deciding whether to stand or run.
  16. Personally I dislike the mouse controls and prefer the default keyboard settings. I suspect your physical setup goes a long way toward determining which configuration suits you. If you're using a trackpad I assume you're playing on a laptop, in which case it's probably best if you keep fiddling with the keys until you find something that feels comfortable. I can say that once you find a good configuration the camera functionality is solid, and you cease thinking about it, so keep trying.
  17. I like paint.NET, but I like the GIMP even better, FWIW. http://www.gimp.org/
  18. It's my fault. Sorry. Still, it could be worse. Your thread could have been hijacked by a discussion of Twilight.
  19. The part about the young Indian girl who adopts Maturin is indeed very memorable. My favorite setting though is the island in Indonesia where Maturin hikes to the old Buddhist temple up in the mountains and finds the animals there are all tame. It's either The Nutmeg of Consolation or the book right before. I feel for you guys who are reading the series piecemeal. I used a coupon to buy a nice complete set at a discount, and it was a great purchase. If you like the books, I recommend going the complete set route if you can, since otherwise you'll always be hunting around for the next volume.
  20. Yeah, book two definitely takes off in an unexpected (but good) direction. Personally I favor the middle of the series where it gets more heavily involved in espionage.
  21. Kind of off-topic, but has anyone read Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels? Captain Aubrey was always looking for cheap black powder so he could have his crew practice marksmanship, and one time he got a few oddly-marked barrels from a defunct fireworks manufacturer. When the crew tried them out their cannons let out huge red, green, and white bursts. Just thought I'd mention it, since this thread reminded me of those great books. I wonder whether tracer colors changed due to late-war supply and quality control problems (there, that was sort of on topic).
