  1. Am I in a different universe to you guys? I have bought 'finished' games in the past that were literally unplayable. Crashes to desk top, UI that didn't work, non-existent AI, play it to death (between crashes) in about an hour, wait ages for a patch which doesn't make it much better. £40 written off in an instant. I don't think CMRT is quite in that league is it? What is it about the game that means a patch is essential? I am having a ball playing it - a patch will be nice, but really! And as someone said, I would expect the coders are completely different people to the graphics and modellers, so I expect the patch hasn't been delayed by more than days if anything. Also guys, BFC goes bust, and we get no more CM. AT ALL. EVER. That make you happy would it? No like, no buy. It's very very simple. BFC are not ripping us off, despite us having no realistic alternative to their product.
  2. If humans were all perfect, wise and humane, you wouldn't need a political ideology... people would just be nice and get along! Of course, you would also not have most forms of progress, as almost every step forwards involves someone somewhere trying to better themselves rather than all of humanity. Whether it is a parent scrimping and saving to give their child an education or a ticket to the West, or working long hours in an office to afford the expensive life style... you wont see the same behaviours to enable them to buy the whole village a well, or give everyone a day at the beach. However, back on topic - If Russia was planning an assault on Germany anytime sooner than 1943 then they were even more incompetent and clueless than the Nazis. I mean, if you wanted to make sure Germany lost the (probably inevitable) war that Hitler was bound to provoke at some point, what better way then start it 3 years earlier than the earliest plan, with an economy not geared for total war, hopelessly too few U boats, and then go from a situation where you are shocked at how fast France is defeated to assuming you will be home from Russia before the weather gets more than a little crisp in the mornings! At least Stalin learned not to interfere, one thing that Herr Schicklgruber never did...
  3. There is an implicit point in discussing Soviet vs German 1930's systems. This is that the term 'communism' applies to the political system then present in the USSR, not the idealistic 'true communism' of Marx et al. Thus, points like the above, whilst true, are a red herring. For what it is worth, no one has yet actually tried communism, so we don't know how it would work. I have my suspicion...! The closest I can think of is an ant colony. As someone once said 'communism; right idea, wrong species'!
  4. You are in the wrong thread. Needs to go in Tech support thread. Save game almost essential.
  5. I have never had an issue on smoke. It does need to be slow, otherwise you get a short overdense screen Oh, and WP is renowned for not hugging the ground - the chemical reaction generates heat which tends to encourage it to rise. Actually quite hard to make cold smoke fast (outside - dry ice doesn't count. And, yes, you do need to limit the size of screens (depending on the shell size - smoke rounds only have so much capabilty you know... 50m sounds way to large for me - I have never measured it, but I would allow say 2 x 81mm for a 30 m screen say. Oh, and wind makes smoke much less effective.
  6. Lets see: Button and functionality for Crab mine clear ('clear mines') graphic for chains (static & rotating) Logic for mines detonating (and graphics, although this might be already there) logic to reverse turret smoke/dust generation Logic for Petard mortar on AVRE, reload etc graphics for same weapons stats for same need I go on? I do hope this isn't just the $10 for v3.0 debate again. I have heard it say that the components for an Iphone are worth about $20 (in bulk). I don't recall any whining on Apple websites! If you don't like it, don't buy it. They do not have a stranglehold on you - the game doesn't stop working if you don't buy! I will be!
  7. One problem that took me ages to overcome was using the 1 min 'turn' as a SL/ASL turn. I would fire for a minute, (aka SL 'prep fire'), then up and move. 1 minute is not nearly enough. You need suppressing fire for at least 2-3 mins most of the time. Best to wait til you havent had any fire from the location for a minute, then move. Also, are you sure it was the sniper firing? Is there someone else with eyes on you?
  8. Good question. I am still waiting for the answer to my question... who murders a large proportion of their senior army officers just before they plan to attack someone? Or was Stalin so keen on a fair fight he wanted to give the Germans a head start?
  9. Would a country (or leader) planning to start a war any time soon do such an efficient job of murdering the senior leadership of the army? Stalin was bad, not mad (barring a little paranoia - but some of them probably were out to get him!). He didn't deal with Zhukov until after the war, even when he was a serious threat due to his successes and popularity...
  10. And back to the debate on how to enter buildings. The conversation seems to swing between 'distant' sightings, and what is the best way to actually enter a building if you suspect there are enemy actually in there. I think distant sightings has been covered. As for close sightings, there are also two issues - the potential of enemy actually inside, and the issue that once you move in, the troops become visible to the building opposite, and they themselves are spotted and fired at from close range by unsuppressed stationary troops (that one is read as 'shot to pieces'!). To deal with the two separately - if you dont know whether the building is occupied (or think it isn't), you need to get some targets and fire power close to it... so a quick move way point just outside the door will usually provoke any fire. You MUST have other units on overwatch to then overwhelm them. You might lose some of the entry team, but hopefully the building cannot have many in, or you would have spotted them earlier. I plot entry with a HUNT, thus they stop when fired on (single AP, so they dont get stopped by other fire too soon. They then wont rush straight to the enemy side of the building and get shot. If you know the building is occupied, suppress it. Then some more, then some more again! Usually the occupants will leave or die/cower. When you haven't had fire for a turn (or better, 2) fast move into the building since that gives least time for them to recover once you stop the area fire on the building. This might get the assault team shot by the newly revealed enemy in the next building, but you needed to take the first building, right? If not, you should have worked round to get fires on all buildings nearby. In summary, making the enemy bug out and strolling in is far better than debating which move type to use when assaulting. I rarely assault these days (too much of a lottery). And I don't mean the movement order, I mean I rarely enter buildings where enemy is/might be. My favourite enemy building is one with an MG, half a dozen SMGs and some rifles all firing flat out at it!
  11. Why do you say they are not? The manual states that units on quick are moving at the jog, and slightly emphasizing speed over awareness, cohesion and cover. What is it your troops are doing (or not doing)? The keys to moving under fire are: a) don't do it if the fire is accurate and intense. Sporadic rifle fire from 300m is not the same as multiple automatic weapons from 100m. Moving towards an unsuppressed firer is high risk. short moves from cover to cover, with pauses (let the firing stop, and ideally the firer start firing elsewhere). Two sections (well separated) alternating is far better than 1 I used to make the above mistakes all the time. Get fire superiority and suppress the h&** out of the firer (and not just for a partial turn), then move.
  12. You have got to explain how you run cautiously! Or crawl recklessly for that matter! Run cautiously is 'move fast but take account of incoming fire', (because to run you have to be upright and move fast - i.e. not crouched behind cover). This is called 'Quick'. In your language, 'run recklessly' is 'Fast' Cant help you with crawl recklessly, but the closest is probably short 'Quick' moves (one or 2 APs with 10 sec pauses between each)
  13. Surely they still teach grammar where you come from? To bombard is one of those irregular verbs: I scatter rounds ineffectually, you kill with a spotting round, he is being investigated by BF for hacking the code With apologies to Yes Mininster:) (the original was ' I give confidential press briefings; you leak; he's being charged under section 2A of the Official Secrets Act.')
  14. Also, hazard a guess as to what the job of an arty observer is? I don't know about you, but being in a position to observe at least gives a chance that I can be observed (especially if someone firing nearby attracts attention. It can be easier to spot someone in a building than in (say) a field of crops in RL. Buildings don't move, do have sharp edges etc. People move and break sharp edges so attract attention. A clump of bushes moves in the breeze, is irregular etc. Far better than in a window of a building (even back a little in the room) is under some bushes in the garden...
  15. Thrown grenades are pretty effective when they hit but getting te team into firing (throwing!) position, now there's a challenge. Prefer PIATs (lack of firing signature wins over the more effective bazooka they way I play them (none of this Russian heroic creeping up on tanks for me!) Although I got a Tiger with only my 3rd or 4th grenade the other day for only 5 of my casualties! And they were ordinary grenades!
  16. Never had a problem with my AV (AVG or Kaspersky), even without needing to flag it.
  17. As a rule of thumb, I consider 100m too close for 81mm mortars (unless direct fired)! So for an aircraft, no way! I might allow a 2"/60mm but you are asking an awful lot of the firing team not to drop a spotting round (at least) that far out. Much more comfortable with 250m (if the incoming isnt too big). Oh, and rockets, double safety distance and move to the next highest unit, so 500Km is about right!
  18. I am a great fan of Aris' mods, and in fact run a complete Aris vehicle fleet and terrain. Some of others' work in the flavour objects and buildings. However, I am beginning to notice something about the explosion; it starts nicely as an expanding flame (probably too much flame for small explosions but I want the slightly over the top effect). However the very end of the animation looks to me a bit like one of those sci-fi special effects where something is sucked back through into a different universe - it visibly shrinks. I would love it if it continued expanding slowly but fades without a real shrinking. I suspect this might be beyond the engine; I know it is well beyond any artistic skills I have. Alternatively the last few frames could be a ring of flame as the fireball expands and fades. Am I alone in this?
  19. Btw, talk about the flammability of full tanks is misguided. Liquid fuel (diesel espaecially but also petrol or gasoline to the colonials ) is MUCH less flammable than vapour. A nearly empty tank is your problem in terms of bang for buck.
  20. Am I the only one who thinks that indirect fire with Mgs would not enhance the game? I think in rl it wasn't (I believe) done on the fly very much, and would count as pre-scenario preparatory damage, like the really heavy artillery barrages. Also, due to major player advantages it would tend to gamey exploitation needing all sorts of rules about where and when you can't use it. Just my 2p....
  21. Any topic discussed over and over is a waste of time.... I would write the same about a discussion on gameplay if it kept happening (and was unfair to either BFC or a group of users).
  22. I came back on the forum after a broadband update, and I am reminded of the first Crocodile Dundee film. Paul Hogan, playing the Oz outback man gets taken to US (cue all the modern technology gags including the bidet). He shows no interest in the TV 'cos he saw one once years ago. TV is switched on to reveal a repeat of I Love Lucy (or something). "Yep. Told you I'd seen TV" (or some similar remark) Please can we get off the $10 and value debate! Search is your friend, the topic has been talked to death, buried, reanimated, wandered around as a zombie, beheaded and burned already! Rise of flight charge a few dollars per flyable aircraft! BFC haven't done that - get the demo for free, with 1 infantry type and 1 AFV per nation, and you have to pay $1.99 per tank type, anyone? I nearly had a typo in that, it came out $109. Now, if BFC charged $109 for upgrading to 3.00, I think it might be worth a discussion. If you can afford a PC, and Internet and electricity to play/mod CM2, I think we can all pay $10! Oh, and if you can't, it's not compulsory...
  23. Guys, it is more likely another case of 'what you see is an approximation of what is happening in the game code'... Tanks can clip buildings, infantry jump empty air then run through the wall... Not an AI cheat I suspect - AI doesn't get special code on the whole. we all use the same TacAI
  24. Don't see it myself... you need more lead going down range than you think, and troops don't open fire at ludicrous ranges - generally they do pretty well on their own with the fire control. I use covered arcs of course, but usually to tell them to concentrate on potential higher priority targets (i.e. leave that tank crew, cover this set of buildings...
  25. Are you sure the bazooka team could see the ground in the covered arc? They would not ignore the tank unless they didn't see it (or were already suppressed). I think people might be underestimating the ranges at which fire can be effective. The aim of fire is to suppress the other guy before he supresses you. Don't try and hide and get close range sure kills. (Except in very unusual circumstances like being behind a building rather than in it, so you can nail the assault team as it enters the other side. But don't hide even then, just make sure here is no Los) "Look after the suppression and the kills will look after themselves"
