  1. I do not have a similar experience as the OP. Mine is more like @slysniper's. My AA gun crews die like flies once the return fire starts. I have one game going now where my three Russian 40mm have been reduced to one still operational and one never even fired a shot. The one that is still operational has really only been firing at aircraft because nothing on the ground has LOF against it yet - I expect it to die shortly. Now, I have had some good experience with a German 20mm behind a sand bag wall lasting quite a while - not really a big surprise though since the crew had good protection and the high ground.
  2. I may have missed this so just point me in the correct direction if I did: what fortification bug?
  3. Not to mention this is easily solvable with the current UI... The majority of the time it is pretty easy to see which icons represent units that are in the truck and for those few other times move the camera slightly (tip tab select the truck so the camera will rotate around it) you will not have to change your view much to clearly see which icons are in the truck. My 2 cents. (well actually that would have to be 5 cents in Canada since we did away with pennies last year)
  4. I am also convinced that there are more subtle things going on. I have seen on occasion my men firing on what I think is nothing at all. Clearly they have seen something. Invariably a few moments later a contact appears.
  5. I think this might be a big factor. One of the amazing things about this game is that you don't get perfect knowledge of what effect your actions have on your opponent. Luck and FOW aside I would not have expected to eliminate a force like that in the woods with a barrage you describe. Sure I would expect casualties but not elimination. In fact I pretty much never *expect* elimination of the enemy by artillery. My experience is if you want a gun eliminated by the use of artillery you have to target the gun itself. So, I would use a point target on the gun or a very tight circle on the gun's location. Then I would never assume that the gun was eliminated - I would verify its status after the smoke cleared. I have used point targets to eliminate guns before but many times they are still there afterwards - often with a few less crew but still functioning. Verify and repeat the call if the gun is still there.
  6. I am not sure how the release of black sea will bring activity to the CMFI maps and mods forum?
  7. Indeed it is quiet but I play CMFI pretty much daily and even have a scenario in the works. Sadly finishing that scenario has taken a back seat to some testing work I am doing but I'll get there.
  8. Yikes, that is way to close. My rule for safe distance is 500m. I might risk 250m if there is cover but really 500m is the way to go. Which means that an infantry platoon is got going to be rushing in after the attack. Check out what Mother Google found: https://www.google.ca/search?q=site%3Abattlefront.com+CAS
  9. Yuck that sucks. I have not experienced that before. I have Symantec on my secondary machine - no issues and my old machine had Norton - again no issues. I hope @Pak40's advice works for you. I would keep the install files anyway as back up but no you should not have to do that. My experience with reinstalling is that no additional activation is required (as long as we are talking about reinstalling on the same machine)
  10. Sure, seems reasonable however the Company HQ can offer command support to platoons which have lost their HQ and even to squads that are separated from their HQs. However I'm not contradicting you really, just saying that the influence could also apply to units that are "in command" under the Company HQ's not just to those connected on the org chart.
  11. The information about enemy locations is transmitted through the C2 chain. But no one that cannot personally see the enemy gets full contacts. So *no* borg spotting (with the exception of Basic Training mode). However it is an advantage because if a unit has ? contacts because of the C2 chain and moves to a location where they do have LOS then the will spot the enemy quicker - presumably because they are looking in the right location.
  12. I have no idea. After reading your question I was thinking about how to test it and so far I have come up blank. There are so many other variables in the game it think it would be difficult to see what effect the company HQ's might have on the members of a fire team from 3 squad of 2 platoon conducting an assault.
  13. Oh man I am a total dough head then because I read the manual before posting my earlier comment. One would think I would have recognized what I had read only a few hours previously. Sigh.
  14. Well yeah exactly. I do think you idea is not important and I do want BFC to work on other things. There I said it - all in the open now All kidding aside some of what you are talking about - reducing the god's eye view advantage - could be a useful mode to play in. Those IronMan mode discussions of old were interesting. Considering I don't much care for Iron I would probably not be a big user of that mode. But hey if BFC thinks it is wroth doing then sure. But some of the things you are talking about - no ability to command or see or interact with units out of C2 - really are not likely to be workable. They create game play issues beyond just making more clicking necessary they actually break game play and would require a lot of changes to the way commands are handled and the responsibility of the TacAI.
  15. I think @womble gave you good answers I'll just clarify one thing. Some HQ units have a commander and an executive officer in the same unit (typical of Platoons but not all) and some have two separate units one the HQ and one the 2IC or XO or HQ support (typical of Battalion and Company but again not all) depending on the organization. In the case of the CO and XO are in the same unit if the CO is hit the XO will take over in short while. Assuming any radio operator is still OK not much will change in terms of C2 but the unit's leadership factor will change - because a new guy is in charge. You can see the name and leadership value will change in the UI. In the case of the CO and XO being separate units if the CO is hit the XO will take over at some point. Now the Company, Battalion etc. is commanded by a new guy and his leadership ability will apply. The XO in this case could have additional communications challenges because that unit often does not have a radio organic to the unit. The issue @womble alluded to is that it is not clear if an intact radio operator from the HQ unit will offer his services to the XO to maintain the Comms for him. I believe he will but have not tested to verify that. I base that belief on experience with mortars and radios (if a radio equipped unit is nearby the mortar will be available to FOs for calling indirect fire) and Tank HQ crews that have lost their tank (who if they get into a radio equipped vehicle their tanks come under their command again).
  16. Are you sure about that? I think that if you click on open ground and deselect everything you can see all your units. Plus in command phase you can see all your units. Like I said I play an Iron game pretty much everyday and I do not recall missing any units. But what do I know if they are missing I might not know about it at all

  20. Oh no I want them to walk 20 paces with swords too - Charge! I remember that thread. It did sound interesting but it made my head hurt to think about implementing it. This coming from a guy that thinks Iron is too much extra work.
  21. Well, good design/code doesn't get rusty but bad design/code sure can. If your have issues in the initial design you can reach the point where fixing one thing causes two other issues to appear in seemingly unrelated parts of the product. If you ever are stuck managing code like that it can be really frustrating and you can eventually reach the point where the product is unmaintainable. Having said that I see no reason to believe that is happening with the CM code base. I will refrain from commenting on other sources of delays in case someone thinks I have some kind of inside knowledge.
  22. I see nothing in the manual that says spotting changes with Iron level vs. Elite. The only thing that changes is that *you* can see which friendly units are visible for each of your selected units.
  23. Ack, no way:D Is it the part about being able to see a unit's C2 status that you find easier? I do not find that. I can still click on each unit to see its C2 status or turn on the command lines to help out. Normally I do not have a difficult time maintaining C2 when I play Elite.
  24. LOL - Do you disagree that my plan is working out for me? Again last turn though as a squad of mine moved between two buildings they were all cut down by SMG fire from across the street. I think the covering forces gave some hurt back but oh man a whole squad down in one alley in one minute - this is still far from over.
