Okay, I'll put the question differently. Can US citizens who fought for a country recognized by the European Union as an accomplice of terrorism be punished (extraditioned and punished)?

There are forums for that stuff. This is a thread tracking a genocidal war against the Ukrainian people.
Personally  I've zero interest in the Phillies or anything sports spamming up this thread.

Yes. Most sacred of totems, and based where our Declaration of Independence was signed. Generally regarded as symbolizing all that the USA stands for that is worthy and righteous. But because freedom requires eternal vigilance, they must eternally return each year at the same time in order to defend our highest virtues.
Or they might also be sports teams, yeah.

Opposition was much stronger 8 years ago. What has happened since has been highly effective repression and civic demobilization. I think it's hard to parse why one society kicks back harder and longer...Ukraine being the best example even before this war started...but it's clear that civil capacity is as variable and as important as it is in the military sense. If I had to say, I would argue that while quite shambolic, Russia is still a multiethnic empire based on resource extraction with Russians as a dominant caste therein. That creates political cross currents that undercut forces struggling for representative government against corruption and authoritarianism.

Yes, exactly! There should be a seperate force, or at least battalion wide modifier that reflects NCO quality, doctrine and training. Idea being that forces with a high rating respond better to being out of command than forces with a low rating. Think of it as rating how capable the force is of independent operation. A NATO special forces squad would be at one end of the spectrum, and batch of DPR three day mobiks at the other. The idea ias to make killing the officers/coms of low rated units as valuable as it is in real life. A perfect implementation would also force low rated forces to push their officers further forward to get anything done, which certainly seems to be a real thing for the Russian side.

That is an outstanding idea. A modifier that reflects the strength of a forces NCOs and degree of tactical flexibility. Unlike the leadership modifiers this is set for a given unit for the whole game. Forces that have a very bad stat for this just go to bleep when out of command, maybe they stop responding to orders entirely, or do so only after long delays and with bad morale. Maybe the bad morale doesn't apply if they aren't told to move. This would also incentivize killing officers and things with comm equipment when fighting these forces, which certainly seems to be the real world tactic. It would make them effectively more brittle effectively and allow really good execution, pun sort of intended, on the highest value assets to just render the whole force almost paralyzed.
The iron level version might just have units with the worst modifiers execute their last orders received while in command and just stop, until they are back in command. You have to get an officer or a radio over there period. Playing this force at this level would be an acquired taste to put it mildly, but as a sim....

A lot of that functionality is already built into the game; scenario designers just don't tap it that often unless they're representing historical engagements with elite or heroic named personnel.
On the defects of NCOs in nonWestern armies, the root causes are fairly simple and universal:
    1.  Career NCOs are selected and promoted not for their MOS or command skills or ability to lead men in battle (if they DO have those skills, it's incidental); but rather
    2.  for their peacetime usefulness to senior officers:  misappropriating military property, skimming draftees' pay, falsifying reports, general toadying, etc.  Their base pay rates are virtually starvation wages (junior officers aren't much better off), so they simply have to graft to make ends meet. It's expected.
Yes, the basic military jobs DO get done: there's only so much you can get away with before the higher ups start to look bad.  But the shortcutting and inattention definitely show up in combat, with results we see now.
That's pretty much true of all non-Western armies, including China, although the PLA command at least doesn't rent out its draftees as factory labour so much anymore, or so they claim. 'Good iron is not used to make nails, nor good men to make soldiers.'
Soldiers in much of the world are viewed by the citizenry as little better than bandits; neither a source of pride nor security.  That has been true for most of human history.

    Re: National characteristics
Was there also some behind the scenes adjustments for the Russians in CMRT? I seem to recall that there was a penalty for breaking Russian squads.
and not a national characteristics but sort of, is the characteristic of having a strong vs weak NCO structure  I don't really see this modeled in CM.  but strong NCO/tactical flexibility would apply to modern US, Germany 1941-43 and it would be weak in modern Russians in Ukraine. I dont see this in CM but for these armies, out of C&C should be more detrimental for countries without a strong NCO structure.
This appears to be the one of the larger detrimental factors in the current Russian army. Read 'Armies of Sand' to see how this impacts a force. Israeli army, good NCO structure and tactical flexibility, Arabs bad (leading to little motivation as they just waited for higher levels to make all the decisions- no local flexibility in response).
Maybe we need an additional Modifier for tactical flexibility that changes on the battlefield as C&C, NCOs etc wax and wane during the battle. impacting firepower output, listening to your orders, etc.

    Don’t worry, be happy”
Honestly, I think you are missing the point. Which isn’t about cheerleading. Or about in looking at the future, necessarily predicting one outcome. My point all along is simply not to *assume* what you hope will happen, but to be aware that regardless in what country, the wonderful world of politics can and will surprise you. The topic is important because of the masssive support the USA provides Ukraine. And that Putin is quite aware of it. Period!

This loss of the 1.5 mil winter uniforms reminds me of another blunder on the Eastern front where these were not needed as the war would be over by autumn.
This could be a real disaster as the weather cools and Russian forces are forced to huddle under tents they had to bring themselves. if they really have no winter uniforms, I cannot see this going much past Dec. The West should just start shipping winter gear to Ukr. Winter could be more decisive than another HIMAR.

Let's not get out of hand with what I said about this equipment left over from Afghanistan stuff.  Russia is buying stuff from local dealers that fits into shipping containers.  It is individual kit - so webbing, PPE (body armour and helmets) and combat lifesaving stuff like tourniquets and quick clot.

I have learnt more about boots/socks in cold weather than I thought possible - but great tips when I venture out for coffee in -50C weather again.
What could be interesting is if Russia does pick up NATO gear in Afghanistan. CMBS would need to add the Humvee in Russian colours.
I have read a lot of western kit was left in Afghanistan.  Is there really anything of value that the Russians could use? body armour? boots? bridging equipment? This could be the first war where both combatants started with Soviet gear and ended up both fighting with NATO gear.

I live about 10-15 miles from the Atlantic in coastal New England (just north of Boston), and the ocean definitely keeps us warmer, in general, than areas just 50 miles farther west. The U.S./Canadian Great Lakes, are a much different climate. The prevailing winds in North America are from the west. That means they blow across the lakes, chilling the lakes and loading up with moisture that gets dumped as “lake effect” snow. We don’t get that effect on the coast unless the winds are from the north/north-east.
my last Marine Reserve unit in western Massachusetts was part of the 4th Marine Brigade Rapid Deployment Force. Our mission was defense of northern Norway, so we spent 10 to 11 drill weekends training in the mountains no matter what the weather was like. That is how you train for cold weather operations.

Yeah, well, they were anti-Iraq war because it was built on lies.  Cheney et al conflated 9-11 w saddam hussein and then told KNOWN lies about WMD.  So they were right, as much as I wanted Saddam dead like most folks.  I was ~70-80% against the Iraq invasion; it was built on lies and exploited american anger and grief to try to realize neo-con wet dream fantasies.  (sounds crazy but I kinda feel bad for Bush -- he was a trusting guy who trusted rotten bastards, and he realized that by ~2006 by which time he wouldn't give cheney the time of day.  T think Bush would've been happier to just live his trust fund baby life w occasional nice cushy jobs watching baseball and other sports -- actually this sounds kinda good to me right now 🙂)
I supported US going into Afghanistan, though I thought we should have gotten out earlier -- TheCapt & CombatInfMan might correct my thinking on this.
There is no contradiction between opposing a wrong war and supporting a right one.  Markos (head of Kos) is a veteran and his army son just entered ranger school.  Contrary to popular belief, not all military folks are MAGA.
And yes, I always put the disclaimer, because I think that is a courteous thing to do and helps to not distract the forum.
So let's get back on track!

Doesn't that just kinda mean they might be right? Considering the Iraq war was probably a mistake and in hindsight completely based on lies.
