  1. Hey all. Just wanted to make a link to the GeForce registry mod, which enables Nvidia's own overclocking tools within its driver set. There's also a temp. reading for FX chipset owners. Please read the directions (which are very simple) and choose "Auto Detect" for a safe OC. There's a box to check, too, in order to boot to your new settings every time. My results - on an eVGA FX5900 non-Ultra, it boosted the GPU freq. from 400 MHz to 461, and the memory from 800 to 850. My 3DMark2003 score went from 5170 to 5830, and the card's temp has remained the same (44 C). Enjoy.
  2. Try reducing hardware sound acceleration when playing CM... back it off one notch at a time and re-test. Also, with Win98, check for IRQ conflicts.
  3. Hmm, my buddy has a ATI 9000 card, and several terrain elements used to show up as white, (corrupted), particularly hedges and stone walls, if I recall correctly. I downloaded a driver for him (this is like, a year ago) which fixed the problem.
  4. yac - I also have a dynamic address. CMAK (I just went through this on Friday) lists two different possible IP's when I play TCP/IP. I just went to www.whatismyip.com in order to find out which one to use. (It was the last/bottom one, though I don't know if that's consistent or not.) But it sounds like CM isn't listing both IP's when you try to play? Is that correct?
  5. Your son calls me for advice when you're not looking... Glad to hear it all worked out!
  6. These guys are hands-down the best - interesting to see they have a seperate category called "Dell" power supplies! Like a good monitor, this would be a great investment for the long run.
  7. Well, 59C isn't exactly cool, but it's not death-defying hot, either. Is your system new? Did you built it yourself? Can you run 3DMark2003 test suite without it locking up? Can you run MemTest without showing any errors?
  8. While on the subject of the Senario Depot revamp... What happened to the numerical rating system? My CM buddies and I don't get to play often; who has the time? But when we do, the numeric rating was the primary metric we used to sort out the wheat from the chaff in user-made senarios at the Depot. Why delete this feature?
  9. My observation concerning minefields is how poorly infantry units seem to "spot" AT minefields. Is this really the way it was in WWII? Wouldn't troops notice the freshly dug, then covered holes? I consistently have squads march over roads or breaks in the trees, only to have an AFV get immobilized in the same location a few turns later...
  10. You're kidding, right? With that rig, he could play a 10000 point Huge battle with a city on the map with x4AA AND x8AF enabled without it burping...
  11. Here is a great article on on-board video. In short, they all rot, with the possible exception of the NForce2 mobos, which is basically a MX440 built in. Changing out the power supply IS something that's fairly easy to do; however, we would have to be convinced that this is truly the problem before proceeding. Hey, what's the wattage on the power supply of the other box? Hpt. Lisse
  12. May I ask - How large are we talking about? How many units? Does your machine perform well at other games/tasks? Is there any other indication that it may not be set up/configured correctly?
  13. Wierd. But try going into either game and delete the "prefs" folder, then re-launch the game. Just for laughs, try a different resolution than you currently use and see if it works.
  14. Try Junk2drive's suggestion. When you send PBEM or TCP/IP game info, it only sends "cues" for sounds and graphics, which gets re-constructed on your friend's machine. It isn't literally sending .wav files, etc. There should be a folder there along with "BMP", etc. named "WAV".
  15. Yeah, my apologies, no more post happy hour posts from me...
  16. Interesting what Richie notes about the 90mm penetrating the KT. The Achtung Panzer website had this to say... "The crew was protected by thick sloping armor that made it a hard target, and only a few weapons were actually able to destroy it at even close range. There are no records or photographs to prove that the Tiger II's frontal armor was ever penetrated in combat. Its side armor was easier to penetrate by existing Allied armor (e.g. Sherman Firefly, T-34/85, JS-II)." I've also read that only 20% of all KT's were destroyed by Allied AFV's/ATG's, the rest by air support/naval gunfire.
  17. Note that, if indeed CMX2 is being encoded in OpenGL instead of DirectX, then you'll want to lean towards an Nvidia video chip, which runs OpenGL apps better than ATI's...
  18. Are you running Win 2000? And not logged as an Administrator? Do you have privilages on this system?
  19. Nah, not if you're running XP. The BIOS, on the other hand, may need some massaging...
  20. Yeah. Depending on your version, your GA-7DX will support the XP2400+, with the latest BIOS installed. The biggest phone support challenge is, the Athlons all have "exposed" CPU cores, and if you mount the heatsink incorrectly, it could either A)chip or crack the core itself, or B)rapidly overheat from an incorrect fit. And there goes $75 down the drain. And leaves you one more try to get your old 1 GHz on correctly, which leaves us SOL if something happens with that. So here's what your going to do. A) Run Sandra, select "CPU & BIOS information". Under this, change the dropdown device menu item from "processor 1" to "system BIOS". Write down the BIOS date (3rd or 4th line). Physically open the box. Check your RAM sticks. I know the one I sent you is PC2100, but is the other labeled PC2100 or PC1600? It's important. Also, find the motherboard version number by looking here C) You'll find the GA-7DX BIOS revision versions right here. The most important thing to note is that, the XP2400+ we want to install is only supported by motherboard version 3.0 or later. Compare the dates of the BIOS updates to the one Sandra reported to you. Above the listed BIOS revisions is a FAQ entitled, "How to reflash M/B BIOS?" Goto this and print it out for later reference. D)If you meet the following criteria - 1)Both sticks of RAM are indeed PC2100, 2)your motherboard is version 3.0 or later, THEN we will order the XP2400+ (retail) from Newegg and have a local computer shop install it for a small fee AFTER you and I have updated the BIOS over the phone. E) Have a nice day.
  21. This is similar to the "freeway" we discussed going into/out of your CPU. In order to have a 333 Mhz front side bus (or 166 x 2, Double Data Rate, DDR) CPU, you must have memory that supports that faster speed. Your memory/FSB maximum is 266 (or 133 x 2 DDR) - my recommendation is the XP2400+ processor, which can be easily overclocked to faster speeds (stock is 1.93 Ghz). Runs $72 including new heatsink/fan unit.
  22. Yes, the move to OpenGL for CMX2 should be a boon to us all...
