  1. Hey ya'll, just found this lovely chart at THG, with a hardware swap imminent... Yeeowza Click on the chart to increase the size... Note that the 6800GS is roughly equivalent to a 6800GT. While my eVGA FX5900/BartonXP 2500+ (OC'ed to 2.1 Ghz & 360 FSB)/ 768 MB memory has worked well for two years, really large campaigns like CMBB's "Road to Ihantala" can bring a stutter to the landscape (boning up for CMC, oh yeah.) Small to Med. battles, even with 8xS AA turned on at 1280x1024, run pretty smoothly. It'll be interesting to see where NVidia's mid-range stuff in the 7000 series ends up, performance-wise. Is anyone here running CMBB/CMAK with a 7800GT or GTX?
  2. The big "S" is square on - NewEgg is a great vendor, I don't bother w/anyone else these days. Great service (esp. w/returns) which is a rarity. If you had PCI-express, I would have recommended the new 6800GS card - which is equivalent to the 6800GT, 'cept much cheaper - rumor has it that they may release an AGP version, but I haven't seen that yet.
  3. Just in a broad, ballpark way - how many copies of CMC would have to be sold to continue development of a CM:AK based CMC title?
  4. That's cool, but the interface (showing two seperate ammo groups) would lead one to believe it's the ammo for each weapon.
  5. During a QB last night - my immobilized Panther D fires its turret MG at an enemy unit behind it, but both the bow MG (which clearly isn't being employed) AND the co-ax MG ammo levels drop simultaneously. I found an early thread about this - Here But no real answer. Since CM:Shock Force has been announced, we may be playing CM:AK for quite some time... maybe they'll feed us one more patch.
  6. Gotta side with "disappointed." Psychologically, it seems too close to the current, highly questionable conflict in Iraq to be fun. That's all I'm gonna say about that, there are pundits on either side of that debate. Tactically, I can only imagine that you'll be modelling civies amongest the insurgents, which is the only reason I wouldn't rain down "death from above" in every senario... 'cept if you don't give me those tools to work with, which then questions the simulation's realism. Creatively, as someone who works in a creative industry, I completely understand your desire to step away from tired material. Have fun in this new endeavor, and yes, it'll work out the bugs for the WWII release (as well as other modules.) Steve - Do what ya gotta do. You'll lose some long time fans, but gain boatloads of others. Like so many others, I wish you (and your excellent team) the best of luck, and look forward to the 5th installment with great anticipation. Hpt. Lisse
  7. Apologies all around. Buck Private Lisse is, in fact, Hpt. Lisse's non-WWII wargaming younger brother, though his talents at Dark Age of Camelot (on both US and Japanese servers) bring our family name accolades. You could say he has a, hmm, primative instinct for warfare... "Our BT-7's should have no trouble assaulting those King Tigers..."
  8. With immobilized AFV's, I'd like the rotate command to control the turret in lieu of the chassis - that means I turn it 75 degrees and it stays there. It doesn't work this way currently.
  9. Along this discussion topic, I'd like to see the "rotate" command effect the turret when the chassis itself is immobilized.
  10. Yup. And it's "time" for a new one ;^) It's easy to find on your motherboard, round silver battery... it's not covered or anything.
  11. Yeah, a known bug. I once had a Su-152 waiting in ambush for something totally killable (StuG, I believe) and my tank retreated at the sight of the AFV (side shot, no less) without even firing the AP round in the breech. Needless to say, I was somewhat dismayed...
  12. Did you use MemTest to ascertain whether or not your sticks of RAM are good? In BIOS, do you see any AGP/video settings?
  13. Things to try: > Disable anti-virus software when playing > Disable "AGP Fast-writes" in BIOS > You mean an "OC'ed" FX5700? Return the card to normal speed. > What mobo is it? This is WinXP?
  14. Jesus, Ian, that's quite some rig. Why dontcha get an FX-57 instead of that crappy 'ol 3700?
  15. No kidding, Dorthy. [ June 27, 2005, 07:12 PM: Message edited by: Hpt. Lisse ]
  16. Exactly. Even if Company of Heroes was semi-realistic, the engagement ranges with those ultra-high res models and backdrops will be quite limited. That's why I have more hope for 1C's WWII:RTS title than COH. Also from the FiringSquad interview: "But really, the appeal of WW2RTS comes down to the same appeal that Combat Mission has: an almost asinine level of detail..." Even 1C is guilty of the ol' show 'em what ya got trap: Their E3 video definately clusters some armor elements to add some visual excitement.
  17. Earl Grey, the men that serve under you from battle to battle increase their experience in various categories. From the FiringSquad interview - "Like in Combat Mission, all vehicles have crew. The crewmembers have morale and skill ratings, which affect both their willingness to do the job and ability to do it efficiently. Crew can be injured, panicked or killed outright. A tank without a loader isn't much better than a tank without a gunner." If you have a decent connection, here's the Bink in-game footage video 1C brought to E3. It's 65 MB. I'd be curious to hear feedback from other CM players - as in, compared to the CMX2 wish list, what they like or didn't like about the video. [ June 25, 2005, 04:43 PM: Message edited by: Hpt. 18. According to this source, that answer would be "No." Some of the tests show the card to be on par with dual SLI-6800 Ultra platforms - but only at super-high resolutions. In fact, the one good thing to glean from this release is that SLI hassles probably won't be necessary. I mean, jeez, some of the comparison tests they're throwing around with the 7800GTX involve 2048x1536 - how many of ya'll's monitors even support that kind of resolution? Last year, I bought an NEC FP2141SB-BK, which is a high-res "22 CRT, and I play CMAK at 1280x1024 with max AA/AF (via a eVGA FX5900 vid card) which runs great. I just can't see (no pun intended) playing any game at more than 1600x1200, to be honest. So my next system build will have a good PCIe vid card (be it 7800 or ATI's next offering, in 6 months time) and I won't be fretting the SLI stuff.
  19. Well, you'll be happy to know that Codemasters will not be publishing Wartime Command after all (which now resides under developer 1C/Maddox's generic monkier "WWII:RTS".) Here's a brief Q&A session at GameCloud , here's the Russian link to current screenshots , and here's a screen pic from E3 showing the User Interface . I have played CM since the early days, and continue to do so - It would be nice to see if the IL-2 folks can create a decent, realistic WWII RTS, even if its smaller in scale than CM.
  20. Another item to consider - Mac decided to drop RAVE extentions (which interpret DirectX commands) from OSX relatively late in the game. There were a number of developers who were mighty pissed at this last-minute "Oh, yeah, we're not gonna do that" decision from Mac. You are aware, of course, that Charles wrote this game on a Mac, right?
  21. Yeah, so moving to the 66.92 driver (wasn't brave enough to try out the brand-new 71. series) and reducing my GPU's overclock somewhat resolved the issue. CM seems to run better on this driver anyway. Platt, you're in a world of hurt. It may be time to roach that puppy and re-install Windows.
  22. I just had CMAK bomb out on my eVGA FX5900 after running for roughly 5 hours - I haven't played much CM the past 4 months, but all temps (including GPU) nominal. Same thing - system reset. Interestingly enough, windows reported the error upon reboot as a suspect vid card driver... I'm currently running 56.72, so I'll update it and see if it helps. However, I've had a few minor glitches with various stuff since the last critical Windows Update (though NOT using SP2 yet). Happy New Year, Schrullenhaft.
  23. The only time I've seen behavior like that on a friends' rig was due to a virus...
