  1. Cover, too. My friends simply refuse to play the assualting Russians UNLESS there is heavy trees/buildings (multiple avenues of approach) on the map. Marshalling even Veteran troops over open ground just can't be done in CMBB (CMBO is obviously more forgiving.) Hpt. Lisse

  4. Easy fellows, all in the name of fun. I offically re-name this thread, "Non-compliant ISU-152's". Redwolf, thanks for the input, I'm glad someone else has spoken out about their behavior. IMO, I think it's incorrect, and saddles the Russian attacker with yet another difficulty to overcome. Anyone wanna place bets on what happened on the Eastern front when a Stug III appeared in a ISU-152's gunsight with an AP round already in the chamber? Did Steve site any particular material for this decision? Hpt. Lisse
  5. Thanks PondScum, I'll give this a shot (so to speak). Still sounds like AI bullocks to me. They should at least fire once before hauling ass, or factor in a simple equation (If initial chance of hit> %50, then fire). Hpt. Lisse
  6. While playing the cool operation "Festung Breslau", I had a Regular ISU-152 behind a building when a Stug IIIG came along. I rotated to the ideal position and waited for the easy prey to fall within my sights. But as soon as the Stug came within my line of sight, my unbuttoned assault gun immediately kicked into reverse and moved out of harm's way. Range to target was 450 meters, at which the ISU-152's AP round penetrates 146mm of armor... enemy was "fully identified", not question marked... and we certainly had the drop on 'em. Unit's not Green or anything. Grumbling under my breath, I commanded the 152 to "Hunt" forward the next turn to engage the Stug. But once again, as soon as the LOS was had, my 152 reversed away from it as if it was a King Tiger! Damn, guys, if I wanted to play the French, I'd teach 'em to run backwards myself... Any ideas?   7. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding was that the lack of Fog Table Emulation for ATI cards was a hardware (GPU) issue, not a specific driver release. That would be great if a driver fix would hook up the ATI folks... it's the only reason I'm not an ATI owner! Hpt. Lisse
  8. Thank god for the switch to OpenGL. It would be interesting if the same we-go format is retained, but various graphical improvements are instituted. I don't think it's unreasonable for us to see detailed animations at closer ranges. So, when we get close enough, the 3-man icon for a US rifle platoon breaks into 12 seperate men. Complete with their "basic" animations - rifle guys shooting and reloading their M-1's, the BAR operator firing. I can see a good firefight on the other side of the board shaping up as I follow an armored engagement - when I rewind to the start, I'll go over there and watch the more detailed version of the mad minute. Their Sargeant got hit, so their overall experience dropped from "Veteran" to "Regular" as a lance Corporal takes comand of the group. This does not have to be a super high-res experience - even those little sock puppets from WWII:Frontline Commander would almost do. Hand-to-hand combat will have an all-new meaning for us. Tank hatches, building doors, all have basic animations. All individuals have names, which can be changed or assigned. Medics should be able to effect wounded soldiers, perhaps more for campaign-length operations. And we'll see airplanes, not just shadows. They'll burn as they fall from the sky. Tanks will model progressive damage if appropriate. This IS the CMX3 engine thread, right? Hpt. Lisse
  9. Keep us posted. Those Athlon C's were hot runnin' monkeys. I had a 1.4 MHz like yours for quite some time, and now I'm trying to keep it cool in my brothers' system, which is in an enclosed space. If you live near a Fry's Electronics store (or www.frys.com), they have Cooler Master's HAC-V81 on sale for $9.99 - Beefy heatsink w/copper base, and adjustable fan speed (external knob) from 2800 - 5000 rpm, depending on your cooling/loudness requirements. On my mildly overclocked XP2400+ (I'm only running 166 MHz FSB, at 2.1 GHz) @ 3800 rpm fan speed, I've never seen a CPU temp higher than 38 degrees C. :cool: Hpt.   10. Man, there's just less and less time for this stuff... thankfully, it's cocktail hour. Most recent time investment (Besides CMBB, of course) was Star Fleet Command 3, 6 months ago. Fun though. My friends and I would occasionally get ripped and run the IL-2 demo on autopilot, betting on which planes would survive, etc. BYOB. A few years ago, I played Steel Panthers. Alot. In the middle of the night. Even when my British girlfriend would visit the states just to see me. We're not together anymore. Interesting to hear about the Hearts of Iron patch. Many folks seemed to have given up on it. Seems worth investigating. I played Panzer Elite for a day. Gold version, updated, I drove a PZ IV L/24 up to a US M5 light tank and fired away repeatedly at point blank range. It rotated it's turret and took me out. Uninstall. Do you wish to completely remove these files? Yes. Played the WWII: Frontline Commander demo. Look at the little sock puppets shoot each other. Cute, but not cute enough to buy. Played WWII Online back when it was free. Rumor has it it's fairly decent now - I'm impressed to see them survive if nothing else. No expectations for Eric Young's Squad Assault - GI Combat was the disappointment of the year for some of us, and this looks like the same. Compounded by Matrix Games decision to not release a demo... Most Underdeveloped Idea: Fighting Steel, an early 3-D WWII naval combat game by SSI. Destroyer Command ain't the same. One day, someone will create FS with imbedded air and submarine elements, high-polygon models and damage resolution... yeah, that's the stuff. Another beer, anyone? Would Also Pay For: An updated version of a WW I combat flight sim. Loved Sierra's title (Red Baron or something?) back in the day. Most Anticipated Title: C1/Maddox's Battlefield Command. No question about the sweet graphics, it's just a matter of whether or not they get the gameplay right. Developer Hint: Make sure the grogs can slow down "real time" in order to control the troops to our satisfaction. And yes, Rome: Total War. Was addicted to Shogun for quite some time (no Japanese girlfriend involved) but haven't been playing Medevial. What can I say. When the bus to hell shows up for you, I'll be driving it. Should Play More Of But Don't: FPS games. This includes Ghost Recon, Operation Flashpoint, Return to Castle Wolfenstien, et al. Played MOH to the end, but find it difficult to participate in online battles where my brains are being blown out by an eleven year old. Battlefield 1942 is a prime example, though certainly a balanced game. Ain't Playin' It and Proud Of That Fact: Any CDV product ('cept CMBB now, of course) which includes Sudden Strike (I or II), Blitzkrieg, Cossacks, etc. WHO is that tiny little sock monkey marching through the woods?!? WHAT should I be doing with him?!? Oh, *#?!, he's dead... in fact their ALL dead. They too, are riding the bus to hell with me at the wheel. In CDV's defense, is Codename:Panzers (http://www.panzers.de/) but it looks like a click-fest to me. Best Technological Swing: BTS' move to OpenGL for the CM2 engine. I noticed WWII Online is doing the same thing, along with others... we're all sick of Direct X and the unstable driver game. The bus to hell will be running over the MS DX folks, full - speed.   11. Hmm. I ran CMBO on a Tecra 8100 (600 MHz PIII) for several months, no problems (win 98SE) but I didn't exactly have smooth frame rates. It had a Savage S3 video chipset... but if I recall, I had to revert back to Direct X 7 to make it run correctly. Give that a shot. Hpt. Lisse
  12. Right click on your desktop's icon, and pull up the properties. Most likely, the shortcut is pointing to the CD drive instead of the CMBB program on your hard drive. Correct the path and this should stop. Hpt. Lisse
  13. Offical apologies to MadMatt - I was having an intermitent hardware issue all along. CMBB (including that PBEM game) is running flawlessly and bug-free. As well as can be expected with 30.82 drivers... Thanks for everyone's assistance! Hpt. Lisse
  14. So, I loaded up the 43.45 drivers with my Ti4600 and Win98SE config, and all seems to be well. No AA or AN working within the CMBB enviorns, but not suffering the XP framerate slowdown. Still getting PBEM locks, and occassionally the same w/single player, but I'll spare you the novella... Hpt. Lisse
  15. Yeah. Gotta concur, this whole thing has gone a little sour. At this point, I could damn well build a seperate CMBB box out of the spare parts I've replaced trying to solve this problem... "Currenly we can only fully endorse the 30.82 or 30.87 series drivers. By modifying the .inf file that comes with them you can get these drivers to work with a GeForce 4 card."   16. I think it's our damn GeF4 video cards that are causing the problem. Shoulda never dumped that Voodoo 5500, I tell ya... What driver are you using? Apparently, nothing above the 30.87 driver is worth beans for CMBB...
  17. Yossarian - what vid card/drivers are you employing? I'm still working the fix - this whole thing has lead down an unbelievably long technical trail of tears. But I finally got tired of messing around with the VIA 4-in-1's (which appear to be the culprit, or their interaction with my GF4600 card) and bought a Epox NForce2 mobo. I wish I'd read about the 43.45's not working before I had installed them, back to the 30.87's I guess... My poor buddy hasn't got a turn from me in our PBEM game in two weeks now. Arrgghhh! Hpt.   18. Alrighty, then. The issue doesn't seem to be a PBEM-only problem, but occurs more frequently in that mode. In fact, the same issue has occurred with two completely different mobo/processor setups (though both are KT266 or KT266A chipset boards). > Regarding the VIA drivers. This problem cropped up while running the 4.45 version drivers (I see the 4.46 were released today.) Currently, I'm running the 4.35 drivers, which are faster and more stable for "older" KT chipset mobos. It is speculated that much of the code additions and optimizations for later releases are for KT333 or KT400 mobos.   19. Mad Matt, After playing this wargame for 2 1/2 years now, (and proud to say the only continous computer game I've engaged in for anything longer than a month), there's definately a 1.02 bug. Check the audio stuff first. My system was rock-solid until this patch - hell, a few times, my roommate would print on a networked printer through me while playing the game - causing a graphical slowdown, but never a crash. I have been through ALL reasonable Nvidia (4600 Ti, Win 98SE) drivers, 29.42, 30.87, 41.09 etc. I was using 41.09 when I downloaded the patch, and now after 10 - 30 minutes, I hear that Windows "Ting!" and we're frozen. The only reason I protest is that I have changed NOTHING. Even the most recent anti-virus update says "clean". And there's too many other people starting to report the same thing.   20. To the Laptop Experts - I'm having some serious prob's running CMBO on my new (used) laptop. I don't mind the choppy framerates, honest - but CMBO continually accesses the CD-ROM drive while playing (or even just panning around the field!) That accessing is REALLY dogging things down for me. Having played CMBO over the course of nearly 2 years on various desktop iterations, I'm at a loss. ALso (but less important) it doesn't create a "prefs" file anymore. ? My rig: Toshiba Tecra 8100, 256 RAM, 8 MB Savage video chip, Win 98SE, DX 7.0a, and a DVD-ROM drive. On my laptop, the BIOS is not accessable (don't get me started), but the hard drive does have DMA enabled, and the CD is set to "enable write-behind caching" to speed things up. No dice - that damn drive spins up every 3-5 seconds while playing. Any help would be deeply appreciated! Hpt. Lisse
