  2. For the Mac, ATI cards don't have a problem with fog. My ATI Radeon 32mb shows a fine battlefield pea-souper The only time I had a problem with CM was trying to run it on a Umax Pulsar 200mhz Mac clone with a Radius 8mb graphics card. It was fine with 2D on a 19" monitor but was poo with 3D graphics, therefore a whole new Mac was purchased to fit onto the CM:BO disk ! The fog problem is confined to ATI PC cards/drivers [ September 18, 2002, 05:06 PM: Message edited by: Wicky ]
  3. Not sure exactly what you are doing when you say you're deleting the Rave extension.?? If you are in OSX and want to run CM through classic emulation ( not the best option, as the graphics are 'orrible - just done it and it doesn't do CM justice) Goto - System Prefs/Sytem - Classic/Advanced/Open Extensions Manager/ Start Classic/ turn Classic Rave off/Continue. You should then be able to run a yukky CM I just tested the straight Startup boot from OSX into my OS9 (which I use as classic, which I have installed on a seperate partition but ignore that) to check my extensions sets and to see if CMBO would run (even with 'old 9.2.2 factory issue' not up to date ATI drivers). The classic RAVE was on - I think this only gets called upon when doing the Classic emulation and does diddly squat otherwise - and CM ran sweet. If you are deleting the RAVE extension after booting this will not do much as it's loaded during the bootup - you'll see the extensions loading along the bottom of the screen as this happens - Extensions and control panels are deactivated by switching off in the extensions manager (by holding down the space bar during booting until the extensions extensions manager window comes up) not by deleting the file. Importantly all the graphics card's extensions will need to be on not turned off. Keep persevering and let us know if you get up and running [ September 18, 2002, 08:08 AM: Message edited by: Wicky ]
  4. Shouldn't need to partition if you already have 9.2 installed - In OSX just go to System Preferences... - Startup Disk and ask it to boot from your 9 system folder et viola - CM:BO/CM:BB in all it's glory. When your done - Control Panel - Startup Disk - and you're back in OSX - shouldn't take more than 2-3 minutes to alternate beween OS's. Partitioning is best done when new and before you've installed programs etc as it's done from your system install disk stage but there are utilities that can do later on without wiping out data. Hope that helps [ September 17, 2002, 06:09 PM: Message edited by: Wicky ]

  6. The i-mac and e-mac are limited for upgrading as it's a dealer job just to poke around it's internals. And you are fixed with the monitor but I think they do have monitor mirroring so you can plug in a larger monitor. The advantage of a tower unit is the ease of access, via a hinged side, to upgrading memory modules, graphics AGP slot and PCI slots for SCSI cards for running older scanners zip drives etc. which will help in getting the most out of the Mac for as many years as possible. CM2 (the next generation in 2-3 years!) If you get an education discount from Apple, go for the DP867 for just over a £1000 UK (check on the apple store if they do a build to order with the Nvidia to ATI graphics card) which would keep you going into the 21st century. Also check your peripherals as you might need to upgrade printers etc. due to different connections and factor these costs in as well. Enjoy
  7. Are you buying? Make it a pint of Old Speckled Hen with a malt whisky chaser and a packet of cheese and onion crisps if you insist - Did I mention the ciggie papers and bogroll? Sorry, but I couldn't resist....
  8. Does a guy in my home town with a camoed Citroen 2CV, jerry cans, racks etc count? it certainly stands out from the crowd! Ex Foreign Legion Desert Recon?? I haven't the nerve to ask... Also, does a GPz750R ala Top Gun count as a military vehicle (I did 'have control' in a Chipmunk a couple of times)?
  9. I can thoroughly recommend the G4 with an aftermarket ATI Radeon 32mb AGP card. I decided to upgrade 3 years ago from a Umax Pulsar (200mhz) to a dual processor 450 G4 as I needed something to able to handle OSX way into the future (Photoshop 7 etc.). Running Combat Mission (BO and BB demo) is a breeze for this rig and I contemplated getting the new dual 867 but why bother when CMBB will keep me entertained for two to three years but it would be real bargain/pragmatic choice around Xmas when it's discounted to make way for the OSX boot only macs in the new year. Another good choice would be the e-mac
  10. Great job Guys, played the first island landing scenario and I haven't had so much 'fun' invading since D-Day. I could almost smell the coconut sun oil Some issues though (bear in mind I unzipped and organised ASAP) and installed the mods using MCM3 v1.6 into an already well modded Mac data folder (copy). 1) Lower levels of beach come up as wheat fields (pos' previous modded Hi-Res Norm Beach mod pulled up 1st) 2) Sounds - on a Mac will need converting to be combatible 3) Haven't got to the tanks but on a quick inspection when unzipping there were two different Jap tanks sharing same bmps. Please understand I was in a rush and will double check these tiny issues when I have more time. Good timing while we wait for the postman [ September 15, 2002, 09:10 PM: Message edited by: Wicky ]

  12. LOL I got laid off this time last year with enough resources to keep myself amused and busy. I've had to fill in the gap in the CV by saying Self-taught/Correspondance studied my way through intermediate Desktop CM:BO. Then I damn well get a proper f/t job starting in two weeks Suppose now I'll have to go part-time with my advanced CM:BB studies Enjoy it you full-timers
  13. Michael, Pvt. Ryan Member Member # 2370 posted, in a bug thread, a pic of a crew unit er... looking shall I say, worse for wear. Unfortunately the image is no more but he looked a bit punk! Demo Bug thread Hope this helps. [ September 13, 2002, 05:01 PM: Message edited by: Wicky ]
  14. They just race against the enemy's turret rotation....
  15. yeah I noticed that when having a surf at the website. Try e-mailing Russell barbbook@dircon.co.uk for a 'paper brochure one through the post' version. In the catalogue there are over 200 different books listed just on the Eastern front.

  17. Anti-Tank URAL ! Military URALs The history of the "URAL®" brand motorcycle begins with the Russian pre W.W.II planning. Russia knew it would soon be going to war against the Third Reich, and Hitler. The military was ordered to gear up in all areas, including the ground forces that would be defending the Russian "motherland" from the invading German Panzer, ground troops, and German special forces. The German special forces had thousands of the BMW sidecars that the German Army loved for their maneuverability, reliability, economy and ease of maintenance. Carrying a machine gun and soldier plus supplies, the sidecar "weapon" was feared by the otherwise "fixed" Russian ground troops. The usefulness of the sidecar motorcycle was beginning its legend. Back in the old USSR, in 1939, the Russian engineers in Moscow were busily dismantling 5 BMWs purchased from Germany through some Swedish intermediaries. The engineers copied the BMW design in all details and made molds and dies to produce their own engines and gearboxes in Moscow. (Incidentally, Harley-Davidson also copied the BMW and delivered about 1,000 Harley-Davidson model XA flat-twin shaft drive motorcycles to the US Army during World War II.) Soon a factory was set up in Moscow producing hundreds of Russian sidecar motorcycles. At this point the rig had no name. As the demand and function for the Russian sidecar rig spread in the military, the top Russian strategists worried that the factory in Moscow was within easy range of German bombers. The decision was made to move the motorcycle plant further east, out of bombing range and into the middle of the resource rich "URAL" mountain region. A site was chosen in the small trading town of Irbit, located on the fringe of the Siberian plains. The only building on the site was a brewery and it soon was converted into the first R & D building to prepare for the construction of a massive new production complex to build the "URAL" motorcycle. Over 5,000 "URALs" as they came to be known in the military, (they still had no official name) were produced for the Russian Army during W.W.II. They fought against the Germans in many sectors and battles and must have mightily surprised the German sidecar gunners when they came up against Russians riding the "look alike" and even stronger sidecar BMW clones! The history of the URAL® had begun with the glory of helping to defeat the terror of Hitler's armies on the Russian and European battlegrounds. The URAL® was built for the military only, up until the late 1950's when another plant in the Ukraine was built to take on that job and the Irbit Motorcycle Works (IMZ) began to concentrate on bikes for domestic consumption. The popularity of the rigs grew steadily with the Russian people and in the 1960's the full production of the plant was turned over to non-military production. 18. a tip rather than trick for protogrogs and ubergrogs http://www.barbarossabooks.co.uk/ Whilst swinging down some country lanes only 7 miles from home on my motorcycle I did a double take going through a little village called Tiptree more famous for its jams (yanks - jelly:)) when I saw a sign saying 'Barbarossa Books' at Zhucov House. I popped and was greeted by the owner, Russell Hadler, who let me look around his copious Aladdins cave of books on military vehicles, uniforms and WW2 history. I asked if he had heard of the Combat Mission game and the impending CM:BB and with a straight face said he hadn't - Gulp! Thought I'd share this goldmine with you as I got 'When Titans Clashed - How the Red Army Stopped Hitler' by D.M. Glantz and J. House as preporatory reading before my Mac CM:BB disk wings its way over the ocean for the 20th and promised I'd mention his emporium to you all on the forum.
  19. I personally blame Quark for promising to release a proper OSX compatible version in early 2003. Just imagine the chaos if they had done it the same time as Photoshop 7
  20. I commonly use LZW TIFF file compression but RAR seems to be P(olitically ) C(orrect) only... . Never seen a RAR or had to play with them on a Mac. I can deal with zipped files and the Mac .sit (don't see much bmp compression in zipping) through Aladdin's Stuffit deluxe . file compression types
  21. Does the George do Real Ale?, Beer made by the same principles and philosophy as Combat Mission could lend itself well to such a meeting. If so I might be tempted to pop up from Colchester to join up for the first time with a gathering/herd/squaff of Missioners
