  1. Nice leads.Thanks. Oh to have broadband for serious surfing.
  2. Shame on you TIM A. Bringing dishonour to the name of Toronto with such a statement. Apart from techological reasons there is also demands of the community for the different theatres and greater realism. A minutes raw footage in FRAPS was several hundred MB for me and that only showed what I directed it to film. The calculations required for line of sights, firing, and moving and morale is enormous rising exponetionally[?] as you play and more units become engaged. Clever old BTS in PBEM let you save the minutes action - and some of my files for a minutes action, that allow me to zoom all over it, are 3MB. So in a 30 minute turn under LAN you could be carrying approx. 100 MB of the games compressed files and expecting it to keep track of ongoing calculations of the current action, and then render it into film aswell as save it. I can only assume you have not played LAN with 1 or 2 minute turns for the real buzz of the game. Until we all have super-computers with processes dedicated to the particular function I do not see it happening. BTW in Tacops4 how many units and what time scale was envisaged? THe great Meiers Gettysburg had great replay film value but the game is not in the same ballpark for realism as CMBB etc.
  3. Interesting post Falcon. I have never seen actual testing on this command before - I think this will be very useful. Thanks
  4. Hey You have forgotten to mention the multiple films a turn facility of PBEMHelper. Only to ne used with trustworthy players but it makes the whole experience immeasurably more satisfying.
  5. I am not sure the Pacific would be great fun to play. I suggest someone sets up a few scenarios with fanatic troops in bunker, lots of trees steep slopes. Allies get unlimited 8" support [see I am being fair - no 14"] and air support. A testament to peoples guts to play but boring............. I always think it is the vehicles that provide the excitement in the cuurent games with the infantry providing the base for action.
  6. Ah! new tactic revealed rush up to Wittman and box him in. Brilliant : )
  7. Ahistoric --- An historic --- An historian I think it is possibly a clarity issue here - I do not care either way about historian but I would be upset with the difference between ahistoric and A[n] historic being lost Sagan "Heroic and wholly ahistoric paintings of Stalin and Lenin together directing the Bolshevik Revolution took their place, with Trotsky, the founder of the Red Army, nowhere in evidence."
  8. Yes buy them >One of the best value weapons you can buy. I have had halftracks , armoured cars and a tank with them. Great for spotting as they have binos , a range of 800 metres, and hide beautifully. Remember a hit on a tank is a hit , the tank crew cannot get out to examine the calibre so it could be a 45mm , a AA gun so it makes for nervous buttoned up crews --- and more importantly nervous commanders!!! : ) Oh and if you are bored tell it to shoot crewed weapons at range ...
  9. Probably the best scenario I have played against a human.
  10. I was thinking of donating prize money [150£] and organising a local competition. Use the libraries and local newspapers to push the highly educational angle. I just have to wait to see if we are building an extension in the very near future that would take up most of my time ..
  11. I fundamentally disagree with identifying fanatics, after the battle maybe. Good troops are already identified as elite crack etc so they are already available for the important jobs. Fanatic HQ should only affect itself - you cannot inspire fanaticism in the space of a few minutes under fire no matter how good an officer you are. I recall reading only last week of an orderly who got hacked of and picked up a PIAT and stalked two Tigers and killed one. The other retreated. He was apologetic to his CO for his action. How in the hell are you meant to identify this bloke, squad and say he is being a fanatic. It is because he was successful, and he did not die, that he became a hero. AFTER THE EVENT. If the Tigers killed him 30 seconds in he would be classed as a brave but stupid man who got killed not obeying orders. Should we get advanced warning of dodgy stupid squads and officers. Course not. Rant over : )
  12. Capt thunder ... iam very impressed. I had played with Fraps but you have to direct your movie at the time. I suggest you try PBEMHelper 'cos you can load all the films sequentially but with the added advantages of replay and moving the camera where ever you want. Please let me know if it works : ) I still have 10 or more complete games stored...
  13. Rather suffers from the effect on you when you plan your other units moves with this ahistorical knowledge. No benefit to the game [but fun to watch] : )
  14. "I was amazed to find my veteran troops crawling without orders towards the enemy - right through the cornfield. Several turns I cancelled movement but they did not care! One squad died. The other as a single man came back to the ridge and single-handedly turned back three squads --- I wonder if there is fanatic in the set-up." Part of an AAR of "A ranger last stand" on the CD. It was positively scary as the two squads kept in contact with the retreating Germans. I am positive that you should only know about fanatics after the event - after all that is the only way you can establish they are not to break in each second ..... history awards the accolade.
  15. When I play 3000 pters on huge maps halftracks actually are of use simply to make use of the open flanks, thinner lines that exist. Sometimes the map is not very friendly having side to side views but light armour and scouting actually works when the terrain is "normal"
  16. Do not fear Gerald I always thought it poorly designed : )
  17. Thanks Hapless! Belatedly I was going to mention the mispelling of Australian ....DUH! I have corrected mine and added other forces that fught in Russia. Sorry to mention it now. The only other thing that occurred to me if you are to ever do anymore .... I can think of a lot of tiddly things but one important one I think is scenario points. If you can see what size games you play and win and lose it helps. I have played 50 + pbems and a lot of those are 3000 pters. Scenarios can come in at 500+ and one could ambush game over. It would be handy to see a record of what size you are rubbish at etc.
  18. Is it me ? I can apparent only play the AI as it does not like me putting in names of humans from PBEM battles! Am I missing something here? Other than that really useful.
  19. "Strike Swiftly" 70th tank Battalion North Africa to Germany isbn 0-89141-610-2 has 22 pages on light tank actions the 70th Tank Battalion was ivolved in - mainly at Company or lower level so good for scenarios
  20. Recommend "Strike Swiftly!" The 70th Tank Battalion From North Africa to Germany isbn 0-89141-610-2 Anyway November 9th a TANK battle stemming French drive from Rabat. Mg's , TAG's and Renaults against Stuarts. Fighting again on 10th around Port Lyautey and airport. Fought Afrika Korps for the first time Dec 29th assisting French Infantry north of Pichon. Got beaten up by 200 infantry 4 ATG and mortar battery. Three days later working with British troops with 6pounders against AK. They note most aircraft at the time were German!
  21. Consider mortars etc to give smoke cover to enable your forces to get into position. I play a lot of QB's with 2000+ points and lots of people suffer because they are not tooled up to get across ground. You could also consider planes..
  22. I have had a flammpanzer [tank] take out a T34/85 with three jets at about 50 metres as it came around a lump in the hill. The other T34/85 coming from another direcrtion backed off and an infantry squad assuming the death of my tank got flamed at the end of the move. And this was against a reasonable player .opies of the CMBB film are available ...
  23. Yes definitely strange behaviour. But you have a nice site and mean well. I reckon if the Yanks had seen your French section you would have had loads of scans.
