  1. Rowhouses[?] terraces! in England and tenements in Scotland but 65*65 ft would be pretty large and very uncommon. I think 25' wide and up to 40' deep would be a v. large terraced house. To get light to the centre of the property would be the main constraint on depth given that in a terrace most of the properties have no side windows. In UK workers terraced houses, built in huge numbers would be nearer 6 metres wide 18ft - obviously difficult to design in CMAK. Given we are in the Med. though I would still think the max.depth and width would be sub 40'for terraced buildings other than palazzos. I have been to Tunisia , Italy, France ,Spain, Greece,Germany, Portugal, Turkey,Egypt and Morocco -- admittedly not to measure the old houses but you do notice these things.
  2. Just thought I would let everyone know that in a serious game of CMBB my Flampanzer 111 was being stalked by two T34's and because of the lie of the land one came in sight at 60 seconds at a range of 60 metres and drew a bead on my tank. Being PBEM I had to await the next film the following day and was pleased to see that three shots left a bailed out T34, the second seeing the flames backed away and a squad taking advantage to rush up was fried. Very satisfying. Maybe not historical but exciting you bet Anyone wish for the file please e-mail me putting in cmbb in the header. Pictures will end up at the MZO noticeboard
  3. Yuo will have to forgive Pheasant Plucker, the disappointment is bitter. And then of course the CDV players who have simply committed suicide has led to a dramatic reduction in CMAK players in Europe. [Just wait until the grey market version turns up in North America]!!!! Of course experienced players knew there would be no substitute for the 100% US product - and the money goes direct to the horse mouth .... mmm something wrong there. CDV always sucks but then PP is a noobie[ish] - I posted warning..but does anyone listen.. I don't know grumble grumble

  6. I have playe a lot of tCP/IP both network and over the Web. Certainly in CMBO a minute a turn for up to 1500 pts was a blast. Given that CM suffers from borg spotting this evens up the perfect with the imperfect and makes IMO a more realistic game. It becomes , like rule war, litteres with errors and compensating errors. The real beauty is the number of games you get in an evening [not ot mention the laughs if you can watch two mates chasing and hiding from shadows] The other thing I think you benefit from is the tempo where because you see movement every other minute or so you can more easily appreciate the speed of troops and tanks over the ground. It has been very useful training when doing 3000pters [pbem] Please try a Deadly Affair [cmbb] at 1 minute turns it really comes alive. In general CMBB being slightly more complex 3 minutes for 1500 or 2000 is better. Timer suspended for set-up period though as you really need to get your plan and troop dispositions fixed because once the clock is running it becomes difficult to get the time for rational re-appraisal of the plan. It is speed chess versus tournament chess - speed chess has the adrenalin rush ....
  7. I am just so happy this has not turned up in a TCP/IP game Finland game. I have a bout a dozen intrinsic 250/1 in my force. Loaded with MG42's , mortars, AT guns. I can get everything but the MG's to disembark. Click all over at various ranges but I cannot click on anything but the vehicle itself. Is it me! Am I missing something or is some bug. Searches reveal nothing
  8. Double post damm it! [ December 16, 2003, 05:54 AM: Message edited by: dieseltaylor ]
  9. There is a correct answer! CMBB because you get the 200+ manual introducing the new orders etc.CMAK 30pages [7 on trouble shooting] - you are smart ! you could wing it but .......
  10. I do not share the high opinion of publishers ...... I suspect some prat has been told to update the books and has got rid of imperial measurements. As far as I am concerned it was called a 3" mortar at the time it was used and thats what it should remain as ..... I confidently expect the fleets at Trafalger to be armed with 20kg cannon as their heavy guns. Now I will accept that the text can translate for those non-imperial but when talking history it would be nice to keep the context. That reminds me I must suggest metriction for Shakespeare's plays [ come to that English would be handy]

  12. Redwolf has the right of it! Your first act should be to look at the armour thickness and slope of the armour. Look at the gun penetration, ammo load. Speed, of interest, but not so crucial. What are you fighting against, there armour gun etc. Terrain you are fighting on and whether you are attacking over it or defending. Having got that sorted you can make decisions. As a general rule defending is always better as you can chose good keyhole positions, escape routes and sit back to enjoy yourself. Very useful for turreted tank destroyers not quite so useful for fixed turret. But then if someone drops artillery onto your hideyhole an open turret is no fun. Referring to my first part if you are sitting in a Jagdtiger it is a different ballgame. I believe in Normandy one sat on a hill and blew away most of a tank regiment whilst in full sight. If you are attacking keep the flanks covered and try to work yourself into safe areas where your fire is going to cover areas where something will happen in the near future. As with the most tanks but even more so DO NOT take them into towns or confined areas.
  13. Two things I would recommend Sharpshooters - with their binoculars and ability to move forward without attracting attention are a good way of declaring safe areas - or reducing areas if unknown. Bren gun carriers or similar to bring your support weapons into action quickly when advancing. I have used a Bren gun carrier to take a HMG behind an enemy formation - very satisfying.[huge map 3000 pts a side] Most maps should allow a carrier to get about as there are only knee high, also handy for moving forward AT guns. BUT I do play virtually always humans and have only played a handful of designed CMBB scenarios. I do have problems with them as the shortage of time, the lack of proper info, and just play balance problems can be a real blight. However replaying the scenarios can be useful to hone your techniques and experiment for when you play humans - who will be sneakier but the battle experience you gain on time to take out AT's using a variety of methods, the length that smoke survives, and speed over the ground will all help to time your attacks better. I have always thought the genuis of this game is that there is no substitute for experience , it just cannot be all learnt from a manual. I had played 30 plus CMBB when I played someone new who really took me apart with sharpshooters and excellent infantry dispositions. [50 50 draw 'cos I whacked his tanks.] What an education though. Of course if you generally play TCP/IP you get some really bad habits on two minute turns

  15. Battlefront I agree with Dr.Juzzy: I'm a patient man, I ordered mine from BFC. Don't like crazy CDV copy protection, non-auto start, waffengrenadier and lousy patch d/l site. It's like the good old days of CMBO. I can wait in trepidation for my postman to arrive.
  16. Portishead, Somerset, UK via Singapore, Toronto, Sidney, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Guildford, Croydon, Auckland, Southport, etc. [i see my brother in Exeter has not posted yet] >Does it seem to anyone else that a disproportionate number of Scandanavians and Antipodeans play CM, given that those are not especially populous countries? Not complaining, just curious. I think it is a function of distance to the next human who might actually be a gamesplayer
  17. Engineering - credit for the 17lbr - best Western Allied tank gun Crocodiles, funnies generally Cromwell & then Comet - fast and with agood gun and reasonable armour Bouncing bomb, tallboy Radar I believe discarding sabot was a British invention or possibly French? only a few things that spring to mind
  18. CDV vs. Battlefront Oh! Firefly how can you ignore the size of the patches. If you did not have broadband those CDV patches screwed you royally Also I do not think that German laws should have been inlicted on the rest of Rurope on that exclusive deal. I am arguing from the point of historical accuracy not politics And do you not want the game developers to get the max of money from their labours?
  19. NOTE to SELF do not play PeterX without full legal document in force
  20. And thanks to Monty for "having" the right brother-in-law! hence 79th Armoured and the funnies
  21. In the "angelfire" link http://www.angelfire.com/ma4/handsonhistory/ww2/3rd_army_history.htm "Third Army's nine chemical mortar companies expended 349,097 rounds of 4.2 inch mortars, including 189,095 rounds of high explosive and 160,002 rounds of white phosphorous. Chemical warfare supplies included 32,454 gallons of flame thrower fuel and 335,944 grenades" ..... "Third Army artillery fired 5,870,843 rounds of ammunition during the fighting." I assume the distinction is made as with WP being a pecularly dangerous shell. I have no idea what percent the total 9 chemical companies made out of the Third Army's total fire support but presumably a very small proportion as WP was about 3% of shells fired. Incidentally if looking through the threads you see how much was used ,by other forces, for a smoke screen and then how much was used to kill a sniper 160,000 shells does not seeem a huge amount. As a German you would seem to be very unlucky to have been under it. I do realise these figures do not relate to CMAK but is a general point regarding the likely commoness of WP mortar support. 22. Personally if I were a publisher would not touch the Arab-Israeli wars with a barge pole - way way too much opportunities for serious disagreements and general unpleasantness. I have several boardgames that cover the period but they are/were dry and sold to a very small market and you played with your immediate friends. Now Sid Meier's ACW and Napoleonic gave a great game running on old machinery - I really think that with the advantage of beautifully modelled terrain and already clever codes this could be a huge market the engine could cover. Basically the computations of fire would seem to be substantially less as ranges are so short and we we are talking battery and volley fire. And of course if you do the rules for this period slight adaptations will give you the 7 years wars , ECW etc and then ancients ..... and then the world ----- Sorry got carried away
  23. I would have assumed that if Russia decided to continue to the Channel that previously unmentioned countries like Spain , a decent size army I believe, would almost be certain to join the Allies. Switzerland marooned in a tide of Communism - interesting place to be. Norway , Sweden what are your feelings as Western Europe appears to be going down the plug hole. As Czech or Pole are you not fighting for your free country? Joining Russia might not be the surefire choice even if Germans were fighting for the Allies. Turkey , historic enemy of Russia, stand with the Allies or wait till it has been decided for them? Raise a few more Indian Divisions probably a good idea. I think Andreas has been a little gloomy over the manpower situation. I would expect the Russians to get into France before the tide was turned but taking out the oilfields would be a major damper on mobile operations and having enormous flanks to protect from seaborne and air attacks plus the vast area to be occupied/garrisoned would reduce the fighting manpower differential. At a rough guess say occupied W.Europe was populated with 200 million people and you have a 6 million man army engaged in a struggle with a 2 million man enemy, you would have to be very wooried about partisan activity and guarding strategic areas - no I do not see a Russian win and I think the strain of the extended lines, partisan activity, strategic bombing, lack of oil , food shortages, destruction of hydro electric power, and the wearing out of the industrial machinery would lead to an eventual peace along the starting borders of 1939 for Russia.
