Do you have another drive you can install as your boot drive? Put in a backup hard drive, or new, load windows, boot up with your "bad" hard drive as secondary and see if you can get some life out of it. Be sure to change the jumper to slave. If it truly is bad, it won't work now either. If it does show up in BIOS, and you can access it in windows, get all the data you need off of it and go from there. Like the guys above said, they usually don't crash 'all the sudden', they exhibit signs of failure prior to their final gasp. Good luck

How I learned to stop worrying and love CMSF
Hawkmek replied to thewood's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
What's with all this 'foot-tapping' nonsense? I hear it's "bad". I'll have to stop doing that and whistling while on the can. I just try to let guys know they are not alone in the john and they should act accordingly. My actions could be misconstrued. I would hate to get caught with my pants down. -
Getting back to the "wonder theme" And I wonder I wa-wa-wa-wa-wonder Why Ah-why-why-why-why-why the patch ran away And I wonder where she will stay My little runaway, run-run-run-run-runaway A-run-run-run-run-runaway I'm too young for this one, but good music is timeless.

Fun with the "evade" command
Hawkmek replied to Cpl Steiner's topic in CMSF Strategy and Tactics Forum
It's the RED 4 way arrow button. I've never used it. My guys aren't wimps. My troops march into combat like Supermen. But they die like U.S.S. Enterprise Ensigns. They both wear red though. -
New Scenario (Death Valley)
Hawkmek replied to skelley's topic in CMSF Scenario and Mod Design Forum
skelley, use imageshack to post pictures, it's quick and easy. Here's skelleys' Death Valley Preview pic from cmmods website. I'll give it a try and post a review. -
Stevie Wonder is working on this thing? No wonder there are some issues! It's a wonder things are look as well as they do, not that Mr. Wonder would know. Kinda makes ya wonder sometimes.

I wonder what he means by "fixed"?

New Scenario - "Hammertime"
Hawkmek replied to George MC's topic in CMSF Scenario and Mod Design Forum
I was really enjoying this map until about 30 minutes in and all the movement and action brought my machine to a crawl. It's unplayable for me. Set everything to low, but still had issues. I'll try again in the future. -
Yes, road building seems to be a subgame in itself. Kind of like a more frustrating Tetris. I wish we could click and drag or copy map objects.

Is it only me, or is Elite mode too tedious?
Hawkmek replied to Thomm's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
With All Paths (ALT+P) turned on and no unit selected this should never occur. You can see everything and their destinations. One thing that frustrates me is with no unit sleected, I see an enemy icon. Problem is which one of my unit has LOS to that unit? I have to click thru them all and wait for the icon to show to have that unit target the enemy. What happened to the 'target sees me' blue lines from CMBO? Too gamey? -
Pathfinding bug theory (with screenshots)
Hawkmek replied to Cpl Steiner's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
Why do you have a Humvee so far South when the tanks came online? All my guys were halfway to Gun when the heavy armor showed up. This scenario is great but killed my old rig. Seriously, I had the same issues at the beginning of this scenario trying to get all the vehicles positioned safely because I did not know what was downrange. Pathing needs tweaking and I am sure it will be taken care of in the near future. -
Is it possible to rewind the action?
Hawkmek replied to Lightning War's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
So Kill Tracking will be implemented at some point in the future? That's great. I miss that feature. The detailed armor hits aren't that big a deal. Even on the Elite setting you can click on your target and see if it is still active. Does it matter where you hit it? Won't all TOWs and Javs say 'Top Armor Penetration' -
Interesting Battle you set up Redwolf. LOL As for the pathing, was it Quick or Fast versus Move? I believe I read somewhere that slower speeds were better for the urban environment. I know your test had no buildings, but there were many turns that one would not normally make in the open. I am guessing it comes down to managing the vehicles' speed, you can't go sliding around corners in your armored vehicle. You have to decelerate, turn, then get on the gas again. The move command is much smoother in this case with the constant speed. Remember the tortoise and the hare? I would like to see some changes made as well, and I am sure it will improve with future patches. Armored vehicles pivot well. Why do they have to make those ridiculous Stryker-like turns?

Question re: Acquiring weapons
Hawkmek replied to Lightning War's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
Yeah, the good old hand receipt. What was the Form number? You could get anything as long as you signed for it. -
Question re: Acquiring weapons
Hawkmek replied to Lightning War's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
Yes, things like that are annoying. At least let squads share weapons and ammo when within range of each other. Perhaps if Squad A is within the same 8m square the Acquire button would become active and you could swap CLU, Javs, ammo, etc. Joe #1: "Hey, Smitty, you got he CLU over there with you?" Joe #2: "Yeah man, I got the CLU but no more Javs." Joe #1: "Well, I got a Javelin. Give me your CLU." Joe #2: "No way man, you give me YOUR Javelin." Joe #1: "NO, you go get your own , GOSH!" and it regresses into a Napoleon Dynamite scene from there. -
ATGM Ambush - Anyone completed this?
Hawkmek replied to Lightning War's topic in CMSF Strategy and Tactics Forum
Okay, just replayed it. I put all the troops in and moved all Brads to the far right. First move order was FAST to the trees and hills on the right. Everyone made it thru minute one. I acquired Javs for everyone and dismounted. Minute 2 I lost one Brad. After that I was patient and used my infantry only. Kept my remaining two IFVs safe til the endgame. I had a Major victory, but the points were 485 to 250 Syrian. I guess I lost too many personnel. He had one left alive. I noticed an orange exclamation point on a Syrian soldier under fire then he disappeared. Is that a rout? I guess he shows up as missing? Played WEGO ELITE -
ATGM Ambush - Anyone completed this?
Hawkmek replied to Lightning War's topic in CMSF Strategy and Tactics Forum
My guys met the same demise. I remedied the situation by playing as Red. I was wanting to try it again and keep the Brads moving back and forth perpendicular to the enemy. Like those ducks at the carnival. Brads can fire on the move, right? -
Map size IS the problem
Hawkmek replied to SlapHappy's topic in Combat Mission: Shock Force Tech Support
The Small Gain scenario is small, but about 75% forest. Very 'chuggy' for me and my old rig. -
Is it possible to rewind the action?
Hawkmek replied to Lightning War's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
If we are going to bother with a text file stating the battle play-by-play then we should bring back Kill tracking. It was always interesting to see what unit had the most or least kills after a battle. -
Go thru the Training Campaign at Yakima. worked wonders for me!
-
I just went thru that mission this morning. Initially my squads fired their Javs like crazy, wasting a few with multiple hits on the tanks. When they got down to one left, they were stingy. I had to advance them up to about 200m. Then they fired their last Jav at the bunkers. Try it.

Wheres the WAV folder???
Hawkmek replied to Sgt.Rock of Easy Company's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
What sound(s) would that be? Sirens? Or the medic saying, "It's gonna be OK Chuck, you're gonna make it. I'll tell your girl you loved her. Umm, can I have your iPod?" Maybe when a guy gives buddy aid you could hear someone say, Corpsman Up! or Medic! I agree on the engine sounds, kinda loud and annoying.
