  9. Well guys have you seen the screenshots on page 1 of this thread? If I never knew much about games I would certainly buy it with high expectations for fun and gameplay. I do know better though. Hasbin sucks!!! I have the right to say this because of the money I have wasted on their products. However, anyone that truly loves games should research the product before the purchase as I do. Demos are a must! I bought Chaos Gate, wh40k, played it even made a fan website for it. That game, although I had lots of gameplay was full of bugs and never fully delivered what was promised. In fact the multiplayer was supposed to implement vehicles (even had a button for it) but never did come. I tried to play Soldiers at War but that demo wouldn't even work on my machine. Other products I have tried from them only seem to want the fast buck and are quite ordinary and buggy products. I bought Majesty and Roller Coaster Tycoon, MechWarrior3 however, both Hasbin products and strangely enough, these products are great. I mean both of these products are high fun, almost bug-less and have been good if not great products (both thumbs up.) I have proof-read my reply so far and realize I'm rambling and may have even lost what point I tried to make. (snicker) Really all I'm getting at is to research before you buy, demo is a must. In my experiences with Hasbro, I'd have to assume they try and catch you with your pants down by cashing in on your greatest game loves. ie, Squad Leader, Risk, Axis and Allies, Chaos Gate (40k), Civilization:Test of Time and others. If you got to Hasbro.com right now, check the link bar on the right. It has about 30 top names that someone would be interested about i.e.. Barbie, Batman, Furby, Avalon Hill G.I.Joe. Goes to show you that they using the names to catch you, and they usually do. That's why I bought Risk, Monopoly, Axis and Allies and Chaos Gate without a Demo. I played them, had fun and they were alright but were far from bugl less and were substandard products. Sid Meir and many others who helped create games that we loved back in the earlier days have gone off to make there own Niche companies. (Firaxis, Poptop and Lionhead) It is important to watch them. Summarize: Game Developers make great games, Game producers suck, game developers under an umbrella of a large company are always to be wary of. Small or Niche companies try harder and have a greater possibility of pleasing you the consumer; as you really are there life blood. Johnno out -My 3 cents (Q:why the extra penny? A:You disserve it for putting up with my ramblings)
  10. What are you doing starting another PBEM Croaker? Hurry up and get your laughable conscript gerbil, hiding in the bushes, trying to flank-me, left boot stuck in the mud forces in gear and send me my much belated next turn so I can clean up on you! Johnno out
  11. In reply to the above, I agree, but a randomized feature to add other side arms would be appropriate don't you think. I am not sure what the standard side arms of a Bazooka, Piat or Panzerschreck are but I find it Insane and down right unrealistic that they don't have rifles. Now I know most people don't like CC referred to in reference to CM, but they're AT teams have sidearms and are they not based on realistic units? I'd only assume that standard issue for a AT team would be rifles or a SMG. Hopefully I'll find a book someday detailing exactly what was standard issue for Infantry in WW2. CM has done an excellent job on this game and if they felt that making the AT team extremely vulnerable is strategic and just, then so be it; it'll work for me. Still the game has some issues I hope a patch will be out soon, and where's that TC/IP? Johnno out [This message has been edited by Johnno (edited 10-27-2000).]
  12. I just tried to make a scenario as you described, ambush with trucks and you're right it doesn't friggin' work. The AI would not move any of the trucks and jeeps unless they had armaments. I used the halftracks with MG's and jeep with mg they all moved in, but the trucks and jeeps without never moved in, never moved a friggin inch. This is dense as I made a scenario where they had to exit the other side of the map for points. THIS HAS TO BE A BUG!!! Phoenix is perhaps right in saying that the AI will not magically drive into enemy territory. However, this is an ambush, they don't know you are there! The AI is cheating in this aspect knowing you are there before you show yourself. Also, as for Ambushes, man it pisses me off when one of your guys gets up from hiding to shoot before the target hit the ambush marker. That is a real downer. Johnno out
  13. Yeah so as I said the picture just isn't right, it's just all wrong. Thanks for the reply
  14. Thanks for the answers guys, and Olle I love the game but I was curious why they didn't allow us to do this one thing. Thanks for the breakdown on chain of Command too, I wrote it down...is this just for the SS? I'll send you a PBEM file, expect one today...oh but I can't decide which scenario? Another question...Was BTS thinking of adding medics at some point during the original process. I'm a little pissed off about the past because I had a good chance being one of their beta testers and turned down the oportunity. Randy I think the picture in the book I have is showing the British for an example. The funny thing is that they show 5 platoons to a company, 6 companies to a Battalion, 7 battalions to a Brigade, 9 Brigades to a Division, this just doesn't seem correct to me. Johnno out "War is the last of all things to go according to plan." - Thucydides
  15. 1.Why can't you delete squads in "Quick Battle" to make a understrength platoon? Example my British Rifle Battalion which has to have a standard issue 2inch mortar, why can't I delete the mortar so I can free up the 11pts in support cost for something more usefull. 2. I'm making an operation would anyone be interested in helping me playtest it? It's currently not to bad and lasts 9 battles of 20 turns. The forces are British and German 'meeting engagement' of Battalion size with various armor and reserves. Air Support is also used. The only accurate historical data I have is taking the forces off a 'Panzer Leader' scenario card and using it for a fictional battle prior to Operation Goodwood. 3.Can anyone tell me how many Battalions in a Regiments or how many Regiments in a Division or how many Divisions in an Army?(whew out of breath from that long question.) I'm assuming this varies during wartime but is secure during peacetime. Just curious... I have a book that shows something like this but does a piss poor job in the explanation and even the picture is confusing. 4. Someone send me a link with German chain of command during WW2 if they have one please as I don't understand the abbreviations for the German leaders in CM. With exception to LT. CPL. and the regular stuff. (I mean what the h*ll does Rot, Osf, Unt, Hsf and Sbf stand for?) These ranks specific only to SS if so Please let me know? 5.I would really like to have another victim for PBEM soon. Please feel free to email me with a challenge. I would be happy, actually prefer, to play a scenario that is already with the game as I haven't played many of them yet. This would of course be an advantage to someone who has already played the map since they will need it to match my cunning and far superior intellect. Thanks to anyone in advance for the help if you offer it. PS- If I make a website for CM will anyone visit it if I make scenarios and put them on there? 16. Same happened to me too, about same stats ending in a Allied minor victory instead of a German major vivtory which I was assuming. I assume you HAVE to push the allies back further almost off the map and annihilate them to gain victory but hey just have way to many men. Johnno Out
  17. Pfff...You guys. I just got rushed by 3 jeeps, I took out 2 and he took out a panzerschreck and a Arty Spotter as well as reveiling two platoons hiding. I was mad yeah, so what! What was his altermnative? Huh? Walk in with a tank and see if anythings there? Or Guess, there's something there and spray the woods with all his firepower including a barrage? Please give me a break the jeep recon thing is not gamey and not unrealistic. Men in wars were meant to do suicidal missions all the time. Incidentally, this topic is OLD! BUMP, BUMP, Bumpity BUMP BUMP! LOL. To quote someone in a previous thread and post in refference to this topic. If men were afraid to go on suicidal missions or meet impossible odds then "Omaha and Utah Beach wouldn't have been taken most likely." Pickets charge would never have happened, the Black Watch would be just another Canadian regiment name, the charge of the light brigade would never have happened and Americans would never have fought for independance. PS- The last one I kinda just threw in, but ya gotta admit a bunch of pioneers taking on the British Empire could be considered a bit suicidal at that time.)[b/] This game rocks and I love it, Johnno Out Don't rejoice in his defeat, you men, For though the world stood up and stopped the bastard, the bitch that bore him is in heat again. -Bertolt Brecht [This message has been edited by Johnno (edited 10-14-2000).]
  18. What the heck is it with the Hamsters? I feel like a just walked into a room and joined a conversation that has been going on for hours and is totally over my head. (been around the board now for a bout 2weeks and I keep hearing referrence to Hamsters?) Johnno :0
  19. Had lot of success as Flamethrowers on defence, been able to toast lots of dudes and even blew a Sherman and few other light tanks without getting them blitzed. I agree with '82nd Airborne' hide then in woods or ruins and have a rifle squad for support. However, I have had Flamethrowers alone who have been able to route 2-3 squads if hidden well without close support BUT they did have flanking fire. In response to 'Reno' I also played a QB with 3 Wasps and I was totally surprised how well they did. They pretty much won that QB by themselves. To say they are "too" good though is false. My oposition in that QB was light German Armour consisting of 3 SPW 250/1 and a SPW250/8 I think and a company of regular Army (Heer.) The terrain was deep snow and snowing. I proceeded to Flank the German light armour left of there superior position in the town I was attacking. The infantry had to either stay or go sorta thing so I ran them in (IN DEEP SNOW!!) Ouch! No choice really but that enabled the Wasps to get in behind the SPW's and do their stuff. One bought it going after a Arty Spotter by a hidden MG42 another took out a house, SPW and made 3 squads run off before losing a guy and thus the ability to shoot so he bugged off. The third dude stayed around to Partay! He took out 2 SPW's and numerous infantry before running out of ammo. Then he did the most classic thing (or should I say I did) I ran the Wasp in to the remaining SPW and pushed him into a house LOL!!! The SPW was trapped or at least messed up. I thought I was super toast dude's the SPW 250/1 was corking the wasp at close range with his MG but surprising he did no damage or casualties. I think he ran outta ammo cause he stopped shooting. My infantry managed to finally slog into town and throw a grenade in and take the halftrack out as well as take and hold all of the remaining VP positions. It was a great battle, Total Victory but heavy Infantry casualties. If the Germans forces had been different I doubt this scenario would have ever been so lucky for me and the Wasps. I don't recall seeing any Panzerschrecks or more than one MG42 so that made a difference I think. In response to 'Tiger' your question was do Flamethrowers explode (like in Saving Private Ryan in the beginning when they storm Omaha beach.) I read in a earlier post that it is "No" because the fuel on the back is a mixture (thus the duel tanks.) The Flamethrower presses the trigger the two liquids mix and then ignite but are not ignitable alone, thus they need to mix. I suppose there is still a good chance the flamethrower could explode though but a bullet would have to pierce both tanks at the same time. Not sure if this is correct though, just my two cents plus what I read earlier. Seems logical though. Johnno PS - Flamethrowers are pretty much useless on attack unless you can mount them and flank a position (my three cents and more I guess.)
  20. To get into the gaming feeling for CM while I waited for it in the mail I rented A bridge to far, Kellies Heroes, The Big Red one, The Longest Day, Operation Emerald, and Stalingrad. I'm not sure if I have seen Cross of Iron could someone tell me if what it's about? I own "Saving Private Ryan" so I think it's the best (best WW2 but not best war movie) As for the ones I rented I thought Big Red One was pretty good it was made my an actual rifleman in ww2 if you look on the box. Stalingrad was great too, someone mentioned the infantry versus tank scene; that part I remember well. Also special mention, on a midnight clear liked that one also. Johnno (my three cents)
  21. Sending you one right now Stephan, I'll take Canadians if that's ok and I'll lead it up to you to choose what type of Germans. I'll make it right now and email you the file. Johnno
  22. In "saving private ryan" i'm sure they refer to it as the rabbit "to give a chase" were they referring to it metaphorically or is 'Rabbit' a nickname for it? I'd assume the latter. By the way anyone play Wild Bill's scenario of that movie? I played it, and it was good, although I'm thinking the main street where they do the ambush needs to be redone to recreate that ambush factor. I just couldn't set my darn men up properly to ambush up close they'd always fire on them when the germans first entered screen on turn 2. Johnno
  23. M.Bates (is your first name Master?) I'm partly replying to the post by Big Time software on this topic: -------------------------------------------- Everybody is entitled to their opinions, but it is also my opinion that there is no balancing problem. I play the US more than I do the Germans, and I have NO problem beating the Germans on either attack or defense. --------------------------------------------- I agree with this post from BTS, I'm been reading a lot of these posts here and thought I was underclassed by the players here being new to this game. However, new to strategy I'm not, I've played a lot of the scenarios so far and won everyone except the first "Carenton" which I tried first as the GERMANS. This was my learning experience, I played as the germans in this huge operation and ended up the allies won by minor victory. I pretty much play either side 50/50 and feel that now I have to have a human equivilent because I'm too sexy for the AI, to sexy for the AI to seexy foooor the AI. Email me for a challenge Johnno johnnocm@direct.ca [This message has been edited by Johnno (edited 10-07-2000).]
