1. TCM has a good rundown and background to "the Immortal Battalion" here . Like many (if not all) films of the era its underlying theme is one of propaganda, but if you can see past that its still enjoyable.
2. I cant watch Paton without cringing everytime any tank trundles past You would think with such a high profile and costly(?) film they could have tried to get at least one tank right. Certainly detracts from the enjoyment of the film.
3. Another one thats not to bad is "The Immortal Battalion" with David Niven.
4. Houses that have their own thermonuclear stove that has a tendancy to go critical from time to time
5. Does anyone else think the "seeing a sound contact duck for cover from area fire means your close" a bit silly or gamey. How can "sound" be seen to duck??? Its a good trick though, something I must remember. [edited - grammar] [ October 31, 2003, 03:28 AM: Message edited by: Pud ]
6. If you have CMBB, the gun sounds from that are quite good and are the same number sequence (00000600-00000609)
7. I must say this is the feeling i first had when I first played CMBO many, many years ago. I got over it by playing a smallish (500point) Quickbattle on a large map. You get to choose your units, giving you a sense of ownership and the smaller number of units normally means no heavy tanks slogging it out. Having a large map means theres lots of terrain to move around on, getting behind lines etc.
8. Even if it is exactly the same as CMBB with no tweaks etc there will be a major shift in games played. The one thing I believe will make CMBB gather dust is the fact that you can play a greater variety of Allied troops, as many more nationalities are represented (eg Aussies  ). Added to this is the likelyhood that you will effectively be able to play CMBO (ie a normandy type setting) but with the CMBB engine.
9. Gurra, if you dont have any web space send me the image and I will do it for you.
10. I recall many years ago when someone asked the question if CM could be modified like CC3 can, ie access to unit data for moding and they said straight up, No. Sorry I doubt you will see this happen, after all they do have to make a living. [edit - the data tables are hardcoded to prevent such changes, as opposed to CC3 which have the data in a seperate file] [ October 21, 2003, 07:11 PM: Message edited by: Pud ]
11. Yep, but Im waiting for my Cray to arrive in the post. Im not THAT patient
12. I would gladly trade some computing power for accuracy. Given when I first started playing CM a few years ago it was on a 500mhz machine (+16mb video) and now its on a 2.4gig (+128mb video). Any delay would soon evaporate with the next PC upgrade. Mind you I cant recall any computing time going longer than 15-20 seconds, Im not that impatient
13. I doubt I will ever experience "burn out" on WW2. I havent yet after 35+ years of playing and reading about it. I would expect however that CM will progress outside WW2, eventually. Napoleonic Wars would be interesting, as would WW1. IMHO infantry tactics would play a bigger part in these sorts of battles (game wise) than more recent conflicts and so would be more interesting to play.
14. Thanks Berli, I would like to say it was my brilliant tactics but in all truth probably scenario error
15. Just wondering has the routing been tweaked to overcome the tendancy of units in cover when routed to run towards enemy , across open terrain rather than away from fire to find more cover behind their current position?
16. Just a thought, I tried uploading one of my mods which I had in ace format rather than zip format, it came back with error saying not a zip file. Any chance of allowing ace format? With bmp's ace can result in over 50% smaller files. Im sure mac's can use ace if thats a concern. My file is over 3mb in zip but only 1.4mb in ace format. Something to consider, especially to reduce traffic volume (by half!!).
17. I saw a copy on the shelf in Perth, I had a look at the specs and BE CAREFUL the one I saw said it was made from the CDV german game engine so im guessing its the "german politically correct and sanitised" version Even though it maybe more expensive, order it from US.
18. I agree that scenario designers can make what they feel is a national/unit characteristic (be it accurate or not) present in a scenario but that leaves the players of quick battle with access to units which are bascially amorphous blobs with legs and guns. If I could select (in a quick battle) SS units or some other unit which "tended" to be of better training/moral etc (and therefore cost slightly more) and could have an expectation that that unit would have a higher chance of having higher moral (or higher fanaticism) than a regular unit within the same battle would be reasonable? This is analogous to the veteran/green selection, you select and pay for a unit which 90% of the time will be a better unit. Couldnt the same work for other "characteristics"? This could also be linked to year of purchase to take into account the degredation of the "characteristc" that im most cases occurred towards the end of the war. Note that by characteristics I am of course referring to unit characteristics not racial characteristics.
19. Can someone please explain why in CMBB SS units dont get a moral boost when compared to non-SS troops? In all material I have read/seen/watched the SS virtually fought to the death as they knew capture (by the russians) meant on the spot execution. The best way to simulate this would be to have a greatly improved moral. Or did I miss something in the manual/game. I know this has been brought up before, but since we are on the topic anyway a quick answer will do nicely. Thanks in advance fellas.
20. Now there's a fond childhood memory, Commando Comics. Shame I sold my collection of around 1000 when I left my parents home. I would say I have been into WW2 history since late 60's, early 70's when I was playing with my airfix miniatures with my younger brother.
21. Its been a while since I have needed to grab a mod for CMBO but this is it. Thanks!
22. Slightly OT - It has always bugged me that the Vickers jams as frequently as it does in CMBO, I now expect a jam every 10 turns which is strange as the Vickers has been shown to be a very reliable weapon. Im hoping that CMAK has this fixed so reliability is taken into account, at least between HMG's. However I suspect this is something which will have to wait for the CM engine rewrite.
23. Yep, custom maps is one of the better ways to play CMBO.
First thing is you need to get someone to help you do it. (see 3. below)
Next thing to do is work out units. Start a quickbattle with the parametres that you wish to play in the custom map, eg 2000 point meeting engagement. Select the side you intend playing and select your units. Either screen dump the unit listing or write them down. Both players do this and send their lists to the third person.
Third person loads the custom map in the editor, adds in the selected units for each side (doing a quick check costs being what they should be), saves the file and sends it to the first player.
First player saves the file in their scenario directory, goes into CMBO, selects new game, selecting the map as you would a scenario and selects TCPIP game. They then select the side they choose units for and all their chosen units will be ready for placement. The progresses from this point on as a normal game. 24. Probably came up in last thread but road/rail crossings. I know we can mod it (and have done) to simulate it but its still coded as rail/rail crossing with its increased chance of being immobilised. Another would be sandbags, eg for gun emplacements etc
