  1. Well Nidan, BTC has said there will be much more sound effects in the game, including for infantry. If this means there will be more "sound contacts" or if it will make infantry easier to spot/identify I do not know.
  2. Komrades! You ah, how yoo sey, numbah wun! *Ruski-hug-and-kiss-on-each-cheek-routine*
  3. I enjoyed the book. Two out of the three battles covered (the Somme and Agincourt) I was not very familiar with and so it was great learning about them with Keegan's prose. The analysis and anecdotes Keegan presents were all very interesting. My only realy complaint (not really a complaint, more like an observation) was that Keegan is a bit of an anglophile and seems to deflate English casualties while inflating those of other nations.
  4. While I won't debate with you on your other points, I strongly feel that by the time America entered the war the USSR was already heading towards almost certain victory over Germany. The price paid in lives would have been heavier but with the same overall result. In fact, had the Americans not landed the USSR could have chosen to do a little conquest of its own after Germany collapsed. Also, American lend-lease helped make things easier for the Soviet forces when they needed supplies to support and mobilize their massive forces. 5. Excellent pictures. The diaramas rock. Can't wait to go back to the motherland next summer to see them firsthand.
  6. I asked about this in one of them SO CA preview threads... I live on the Island and would be able to go anywhere in the city by public transport. I live in an appartment but only own one PC. I do have lots of booze. Come on BTS, send a NewYorker a beta copy, pleeeeease! EDIT: That's Staten Island.. [ July 21, 2002, 11:50 AM: Message edited by: The Commissar ]
  7. Correct me if Im wrong here, but didn't BTS mention that we can now play QB's on pre-made maps? So now you can design a map to your liking (or simply download one), show it to your opponent, and then use it for a QB and pick your own units. Unless I misunderstood your initial request this would take care of everything you wanted, right?
  8. German population in the 40's was estimated at 90 million people. the USSR's was twice that at around 180 million. Not that big a difference really. If you want to look for a psychological explanation, my favorite is the "asiatic connection". Russians did have several centuries of Mongol influence and many asiatic characteristics remain to this very day. One of them is a rather nonchallant regard towards life. Of course, a mud stained and hungry Soviet conscript sitting out a massive artillery barrage in a hastily constructed foxhole might disagree with me.
  9. Madmatt, Thanks for that mini-bone! BTW - You did use native voice-actors, right?
  10. Mostly as the Soviets, but I'll play a few German QB's just to try out some of the new toys.
  11. My problem with XP is as follows: Everything seems to fork fine but but the letters in the menus lack color, some menu screens are completely darkened out, and you can see the menu picture of CM through the letters. I assumed this was a driver problem and tried downloading the latest Direct X, but they dont seem to have it for XP. What do I do now? Thanks in advance.
  12. I think BTS should give another beta copy to a New Yorker. We have a couple of people from the city itself on this board and no doubt lots of people from New England and such would find it easier to reach then SC or Rune's adobe.
  13. Can someone please put the person responcible for thinking that the "R" and the "N" backwards looks more Russian in front of a fookin' firing squad? The "backwards R" makes for a "Ya" sound in Russian. The "backwards N" sounds like an "E". So now the game is called "Combat Mission: Bayabayosa to Beyale"
  14. Nac, I would suggest you check out this game: www.gicombat.com While the scale is substantially less then that of CMBO and it is an RTS, some of the elements you lament about are adressed. In the game you only manage a battalion, fighting with a company at most. This means you have to look at your overall supply situation, casualties, etc. while attempting to reach and/or capture some sort of objective (not sure on this point myself, do check out the provided web page if you're interested. I make this suggestion not to praise or advertise GIC but to offer at least a little support to someone who will no doubt be flamed throughout the rest of this topic (and rightly so, might I add).
  15. Good suggestion Agua, and one I will expand on if I may. You know how during a setup all your troops start out as one long line stretching out along the edge of the map? What I would really appreciate is if that long line of squads, teams and AFV's was somehow more organized during setup. Just have the game pair all the platoons from a company in one area instead of having them stretched out in a line. Maybe have the platoons grouped with their appropriate AT/MG/Mortar teams as well. Also, put all the AFV's together into one area of the map just so you dont have to go looking for them all over, especially on those 10km maps we've heard about! Same idea with AT's, spotters, etc. If this is done, it will save me from 5 minutes (for 2k games) to 45minutes for large 5k battles. It would really be much appreciated.
  16. More then a month since Moon's reply...you guys close yet?
  17. Now there's two words that don't belong in the same sentence (unless that sentance happens to involve running over a Big Mac while in one's lambourghini (sic))!
  18. Gawd but did that ever sound disturbing...
  19. I can't listen to music very much. It makes me want to say kind, silly things and pat people on the head. But now you must beat them on the head, beat them without mercy!" -Lenin I dunno if that's a real quote or not but it's in some guy's .sig and it cracks me up like nothing else.
  20. Mark IV's, multiple times from the rear. Armored Cars get chewed up like nobody's business. Took out a Hetzer once too, again from the rear. Summary: Its a pretty damn powerful gun!
  21. I would love to see this feature. I loved the Myth series of games largely because of this wonderful tool. CMBB would be like, totally radical with full movie playback!
