2.
quote:
Originally posted by Michael Dorosh: Correction - Dictatorial Triumvirate (MadMatt, Steve and KwazyDog). Though Moon may actually make it a quorum - once he locks his first thread.

So what would that make Charles? ...and one to rule them all...
 3.
quote:
Originally posted by PiggDogg: Congrats & this is great for the rest of us CMers.

ENough Glad Handing, PiggDogg! You owe me a turn! I on the other hand have plaenty of time to extend my congrats to Moon for a well deserved dictarorship... er.. appointment. Wish you all the success you can stand.
 4.
quote:
Originally posted by SpazManOught: Do these hackers realy exist? Has any home user been hacked? not just recieved some lame VBA virus as an attachment.

I installed Black Ice the week or so before I had my DSL line turned on. As you say, not a big deal for a dial up user. All was quiet. But man, within an hour after the DSL line was turned on I started seeing port scans at least 10 times a day and one outright whack-a-mole attempt and that was in the first week alone. That was all I needed to see to know that a software firewall wasn't enough and I took the old 386 out of the closet and put it between my network and the dsl modem running Unix and a strong firewall.

 6.
quote:
Originally posted by Fuerte: I have now 27.10 drivers. They indeed fix the transparent white problem etc. in Combat Mission. I had problems when installing, however. I first uninstalled the old ASUS drivers and installed then these. Unfortunately whenever I had ANY window (e.g. Notepad) open on desktop and started CM, it would run for a second and then the display would change back to desktop.

I have the same problem here. Abit SA6R mobo, Leadtek GeForce 2 pro... it also fixed the transparency problem (the only one I was having) so I didn't have to do the alt-tab dance. I've been able to play by forcing the window open by switching tasks in task manager.
quote:
Now I have nVidia 27.10 back, except that nvdesk32.dll (Display management hook library) is 21.81

Mabye I'll open up the zip for the 21.81 reference drivers and pull that dll out... UPDATE: Problem solved by copying in the 23.11 ndvesk32.dll (luckily I didn't have to unregister it to break it free of the system).. I had tried rebooting to fix the problem to no avail. Had already done the deed when I read KwazyDog's simpler fix of actually using the tools (doh). Now that things are stable, thoguh, I think I'll leave things alone for a while unless it causes problems in other games. Thanks to Fuerte for the interesting fix idea.. and thanks to KwazyDog for keepin an eye on the thread. Great work, guys. [ 01-24-2002: Message edited by: Compassion ]

 7.
quote:
Originally posted by Knaust: What I lack more in CM compared to ASl is that sort of legal dispute about the interpretation of rules

And the string... DOn't forget the string!
 8.
quote:
Originally posted by Colonel_Deadmarsh: Studying film repetively not to see explosions, but to analyze the end results of our strategies to see if they worked or not....and other stuff that would be catigorized under under "anal" by some. I think the "analyzation" trait is probably a dominant one in the "chess player" types you find in CM, me being one of them. Anyone else here agree with this or have a theory of their own?

I agree with what you said, and find that I probably play more like you than dalem... but I have had a couple of rewarding tcp games with palyers who are of the same mindset. No time limit (or a long one), lots of chatting, and looking at the board (erm, map, the old school in me). But that's rare as it's a not too often that i get the kind of time needed to play that way online.
 9.
quote:
Originally posted by Specterx: At a minimum everyone on the 'net should get ZoneAlarm or another free firewall, there's just no reason not to, and they're fairly easy to configure to allow specific programs/ports through.

Me thingks they are talking about one of those little home switch/NAT proxy/DHCP dealies like the ones tat Linksys or Netgear sells... or maybe a real firewall they put up (GO Linux and ageing 386!)
 10.
quote:
Originally posted by Colonel_Deadmarsh: Why not just equip all of the soldiers with Hampster jerky? It makes a great after-battle snack!

The Hampstertruppen would not find that amusing... not at all!
 11.
quote:
Originally posted by Dogface: Ok sarge, You use windows I take it. Just pay attention where the zip file is downloaded, you should be given the option of where to put it. then just double click on teh program, this will open win-zip, and the ziped file.

Careful, Dogface. not everyone has winzip and even those that do don't always use the classic view. In fact, winzip use among casual users may be going down with WIndows now coming with zip handleing built into the explorer.
 12.
quote:
Originally posted by ciks: I like the 57mm/6pdr AT guns very much.

Seconded in spades... The combination of accuracy, ROF, penetrating power and survivability (read stealthiness) is unmatched.
 13.
quote:
Originally posted by Michael Dorosh: BTS will replace your CD for a nominal fee.

Yeah, but can you imagine not playing for a week or so? shudder...
 14.
quote:
Originally posted by CombinedArms: But in real life, tanks often crossed unmodified rail bridges in a pinch. For example, the Luddendorf Bridge over the Rhine at Remagen was a rail bridge and the 9th Armored moved a bunch of tanks across it before the engineers got there.

Right.. .But there are also plenty of real life examples such as the rail bridge over the Waal in Nijmegan that was unusable by anything other than rolling stock until modified. I think that the player probalby should be able to use the bridge unless it's specified against in the scenario notes. But if the players have a question about it, I see checking with the scenario designer as to intentions or if it's a historical scenario doing some research as perfectly valid.

 16.
quote:
Originally posted by gibsonm: Compassion, As one who has crossed railway bridges in an AFV (In fact led a Sqn of tanks (US company)), let me assure you a fully tracked AFV can easily cross such a bridge (albeit a bit bumpy). You are of course exposed and it is hard to manoeuvre once you are astride the tracks.

I dunno what's the norm now and what the engineering realities were during wartime 50+ years ago, but the recores are replete with rail bridges being taken and then engineers being required to make adjustments for Armored vehicles. Agree with previous post that it's (obviously) not weight that causes problems. Perhaps it's in building standards of the time (or lack thereof...). [ 01-14-2002: Message edited by: Compassion ]

 17. Again, many rail bridge are simply not desiged to toke anything other than rolling stock. The weight of any individual vehicle is not relevant. Slight modificatoins on many of these bridges had to be made (like putting in a roadbed).
 18.
quote:
Originally posted by Krinks: Would that be considered gamey though? What are your opinions?

I would discuss it with your opponent and if possible with the scenario designer. Most railroad bridges were not equiped for vehicle traffic, though could be converted quite easily if engineers are avaiable and have a day or so (and are not being shot at). I think that infantry moving across it shouldn't be a problem, though.
 19.
quote:
Originally posted by SpazManOught: It feals like i'm playing in jelly with AA set to 4x. Theres just a slight pause between moving the mouse and the camera moving. I'll just stick with the dodgy status bar text.

Try forced anti-aliasing to 2x and see if thats not a good compromise. It cleared the very minor breakup I had on white text (oddly enough I only see that bug on eliminated/abandoned/knocked out units). For some other more demanding games I had to change it back to get good framerates, but with CM it didn't impact performance enough to matter.
 20.
quote:
Originally posted by redeker: [QB]I've also seen some references designating the gun as the "77mm" (even though its true caliber is 76.2mm) to differentiate it from the American 76mm. It doesn't appear to have caught on, however, and most people just refer to it as the 17-pounder.

I thought that the US 76's were copies of the brit gun? Maybe I'm wrong and confusing that with the early offer by the brits to re-arm some US tanks as fireflys...
 21.
quote:
Originally posted by Dave H: MAJOR difference in the sound of the game. You didn't mention what kind of mods you were considering, but I strongly suggest trying some of the sounds available. You'll be glad you did!

I've always liked the Mad-Dog sounds from http://www.combatmission.com/MDMP/mdmp1.asp as well as some selected other sounds I've found on the way. But the md set is a great start.
 22.
quote:
Originally posted by Chosun-few: In combat Mission, the Firefly is listed as mounting a 76mm gun. Anyone know if this is a typo?? the Firefly mounted the 17pdr anti-tank gun. Cheers. Vomit don't dribble - Erwin Rommel

And that is... HEY! 76mm!
 23. I have been running XP for quite some time and have never seen this problem... I've also installed the game into a non default dir, so that's not the problem... at least it's not a usual problem. I wonder... Have you by chance changed drive letters on your CD? Is you shortcut for the cm exe specifying a path other than the insall dir? Have more than one CD drive? Oh, and BeWary had an excellent sugestion. Try refreshing your CD-Rom drive. You dln't have to actually eject, just click on it so thatthe contents are displayed. [ 01-03-2002: Message edited by: Compassion ]

 24.
quote:
Originally posted by Gyrene: Compassion, modern US grenades are shapes like a ball for the very reason that they are easier to throw like a baseball. Pineapples are a slightly different story, but they are not that much more difficult to throw.

I know that modern grenades are more rounded (like the M33), but the old school Mark II grenade isn't and weighs about a pound and a half. Not much, but enough that it would be a pain in the butt to throw over forked fingers... maybe why the overhand 'toss' was the accepted delivery method? In conparison the M33 and M67's weigh in at just under 4 ounces. Quite a difference. Perhaps one of the reasons that throwing like a baseball is drilled nowadays compared to WWII? edited for spelling [ 01-02-2002: Message edited by: Compassion ]

 25.
quote:
Originally posted by Gyrene: Are these baseball playing Americans and Canadians you are talking about, or Brits & Germans? Sounds silly, but throwing things far and accurately is common skill with most North American youth. Gyrene

I don't know if this is accurate or not since my only grenade experience was with an unloaded paperweight that was supposed to have once been a dummy practice grenade. But if the pinapple that I used to have is an indication there's no way in hell most kids could throw it like a baseball. It was just too dang heavy for that and if you tried to throw it like that you'd wrench your arm out.
