1. 7 months... From order to delivery.
 2. With the regional aspect of the available usits, I can't see why they wouldhn't be in except for time (heck, if there are German security troops, why not?).
 3. There's a one and a million story that I read somewhere (can't remember where, but it was a reputable source... remember that. No Ambrose fable) a story of either an M5 or an M8 commander in Europe in late 44 riding down the street of an unsecured town doing a little scouting when they cruised into an intersection and saw a cat of some sort (want to say it was a KT, but again, not sure, was one of the big cats, though) coming right at it. So they immediately threw the thing in reverse and slew the turret around for a snap shot (as a reaction... no chance of hruting the behemoth)... wonder of wonder, the 37mm went right down the tube and detonated the loaded shell in the German tank and it brewed right up. THis is totally unatributed, so take it for what it's worth. Quite a gamey move on the US player, eh?
 4.
quote:
Originally posted by Gyrene: I was reading some old reviews of CM in Mac games websites and I started wondering what things would be like if CM was not available for the Mac.

Then... there'd be no game since it was built on a Mac.
 5.
quote:
Originally posted by Mad Mobeus: Hi guys...Ok, maybe I have already missed the boat on this CM and XP issue....I installed XP and then suddenly remembered that there was a graphical issue with my beloved CM. Was this issue resolved or soon to be resolved or is it being ignored? Just say the word guys and I will REINSTALL 98SE. Mad Mobeus

XP is an awesome improvement over 2000 or 98. I say keep it. I have no problems with CM and my Nvidia card (which is what some were having problems with) otherthan some textures going transparent after a screen refresh. But if I refresh again, it's stable and looks 100%. So all I do is if things come up looking odd is to alt-tab and then alt-shft-tab back. NO fuss no muss. THe one other problem seems to be with Nvidias's OGL driver and Half Life. For some it causes lockups, but they say that the 23.11 drivers solve the issue. HAvne't had a hankering for DOD in the last few weeks, so I don't know.

 7.
quote:
Originally posted by Crash-Neptune: I just had a 60mm mortar take out a hetzer and it got me wondering what is the biggest vehicle youv'e taken out with a mortar. Spotters dont count.

Why don't spotters count? Not as accurate, after all. I would say that the biggest vehicle was probably a Nashorn -w- 60mm direct fire, though an 81 battery FO of mine fired on an unobserved area on spec and killed himself a Stug III. It's so uncommon now to kill a vehicle with a roof that when it happens it's such a nice suprise (or not... depending).
 8. Aside from the histories mentioned above, I suggest picking up "Closing with the Enemy" by Michael D. Doubler. I've said more than once that BTS should get publishing rights and market it as the CMBO Strategy Guide. It goes into some detail about how small units fought and I for one have found it quite helpful.
 9. Can I get a copy, please? cacahill@pacbell.net Looks great. My current ford looks kinda too green...
 10.
quote:
Originally posted by Dogface21: I can see if you hit a tight bunch of troops dead on, that would certainly be messy, but as a area effect weapon, most of the force and shrapnel would go right into the ground wouldnt it?

Imagine shooting a smallish tree right in front of some infantry men as they wee moving towards it... You could ahve your own nice little sideways treeburst! Clay-
 11. Played with it a bit last night. Figure that I should let the Germans start moving a bit next time. Seems thatthe infantry immediately dismounted and moved to the road. Many had made it just before the 155 VT started dropping on them (DAMN those elite FO's can get the range fast!)... So they were stuck in place when a minute later the 8 and 14 inch stuff started falling. Oh the humanity!
 12.
quote:
Originally posted by The Commissar: I believe it does make a difference. For example, I have achieved great success with hunting the Allied tanks with cheap, inexpensive Stugs. I use the Hunt command and proceed to move my Stug into light trees. If the Stug sees the enemy armor, I can usually get off - get this - 2 to 3 shots before the enemy tanks even see where its coming from. I tried the same routine with Move or Fast Move. It doesnt work nearly as well, and the Stug is always seen by the enemy no matter where its moving from. Especially if the enemy is not too far off.

THat's odd... shouldn't hunt movement create more engine noise? You are moving faster, after all. You do gain some benefit from the hunt by calling a halt as soon as an enemy is seen so that it starts shooting sooner.

 14.
quote:
Originally posted by BigAlMoho: If my memory serves, I believe that BTS programmed CM:BO on the machines that they owned when the programing started and that was what set the limits for the first release...

IIRC, it was an estimate of where the average wargamer would be on release... They were off a bit as most were a bit higher, but the fantastic mod community remedied that. One thing that many forget is the back and forth over and over again arguments between BTS and Gunny Bunny (referenced in this thread) that discussed that they used heavy processing power for many things that might go for graphics in different kinds of games, so even though tyhe baseline may be raised for CM II (as opposedto CM2, CM:BB), the higher requirements aren't all going to go for graphics improvements.
 15. Hmmm... Re-reading the list... no Strike Commander (thought I guess one could add it into the 'Wing' commander series.... same audience, same storytelling style) or Interstate '76... Two great 'light' sims with big fun stories and in the case of I76 the funkiest bad-assed soundtack around!

 19. I've used American 105 for smoke laying... nice big plumes of smoke covering relatively large areas for 2-4 turns.
 20.
quote:
Originally posted by Chupacabra: [One thing to possibly bear in mind is that, AFAIK, the manufacturing process for Geforce 3s is quite a bit more expensive than that of previous nVidia chipsets.

Well, it is and it isn't if I recall what they are doing correctly. From what I remember reading, they are using a .13 micron process for the Geforece 3 chipset. An expensive and twitchy fab process to put in place. Once in place and ramped, thnough, yield goes through the roof and parts are cheaper to fabricate by unit than older ones... So prices will indeed crash one day, but with the performance lead they ahve with it (and the demand they are servicing), there's no reason to expect Nvidia to cut prices any time soon. I still say that the Geforce 2 PRO with 64megs of DDR is a steal since the agressive price cuts last month (picked a leadtek up off u-bid for $109 and have seen them as cheap as $140 retail). It's fast enough to satisfy most gamers. I'm playing Max Payne at 1024x768 with all options all the way up on an 850 and it's like glass... Played it on a buddy's 850 with a 32 meg gts @ 800x600 and it stutters... and CM? Imaginethe high points of the Carenten operation with movies that have no problems playing. 21. Geforce 3 is way overkill for CM. WIth the way that they are cutting prices on the Geforece 2 PRO 64 meg cards, I'd get one of those... in fact, I did a couple weeks ago.
 22. Blindseye... Good suggestions in general... But if you want to not infect your gaming buddies, jsut don't use a damn html email editor. A nice text email system (the way God intended email to be) saves a ton of prolems. IT's not just Outlook, but any mail system that will execute code that you should be wary of. As for you own machine's safety? Update your virus scanner and apply hotfixes. Lock open ports down behind a firewall (a hardware firewall, if possible). and you should be fine even wih a WIndows system.
 23.
quote:
Originally posted by The_Capt: Get her into the game. Well like trying to talk her into a threesome, it is pretty much fantasy. Oh ya a few guys "claim" to have pulled it off and there is urban legend but I don't believe it. But you are welcome to try. And if you get luck please tell us how you did it.

I don't know if I'm hooked into the geek swingers hotline, or what, but I have nearly completed this feat AND I'm playing a pari opf games with a husband and wife (and yes, I feel kind of dirty, but it's exciting at the same time!). Part 1) With the fiancee, I started a few years ago with a trip to the movies to see spr... not too long after I showed her the A Bridge Too Far and the Das Boot director's cut... as well as sprinkling in Kelly's Heroes and Three Kings down the road. Then last year went to the D-Day museum in New Orleans.... laugh at it if you want, but it's a great way to get the bug into the 'lay' person. I explained that lots of the nitty gritty was not in the museum but it was a nice overview... so she wanted more and read Overloard and 6 Armies and then looked up the Ost Front when Enemy at the Gates came out and read Fateful Siege. So since then we have been coming along slowly.. Up until then she had never played a computer game... and now she has played a couple. And the gloves come off in our next game. We'll see how that goes. I'm hopeing that the flames will be fanned next month when the Band of Brothers mini series starts. Case 2) I had been playing the Kiwi a few games when he sends me an email suggesting that I challenge his wife to a game... they are both listed on RD. She's more or less a beginner as well, but gets a turn generated every few days... Her old man balances it out as I usually exchange 7 or 8 emails with him a day. Mind expanding! The real trouble tha may be coming is that I have waxed his ass twice in a row heading towards a third trouncing... and I may just lose to his wife against whom I've made a couple of errors in setup and initial purchase that have haunted me now for several turns... I wonder what will happen then?
