  1. Good stuff, have browsed ibiblio before for stuff about Normandy. In a similar vein, about 2000 manuals, newsreels, instructional films, campaign and unit histories here... https://archive.org/search.php?query=%28collection%3AwwIIarchive%20OR%20mediatype%3AwwIIarchive%29%20AND%20-mediatype%3Acollection&sort=-downloads&page=1 Everything from Walt Disney's The Making of the Nazi to the Weather Manual For Pilots including the full US Army handbooks to the German, Italian and Japanese armies. I've just finished spending a few days wading through it all and have pulled down a couple of gig of 'interesting' stuff. 2. Yes quite a bit more, at least from what I gather reading on the topic. Most CM 'battles' are kind of forced/compressed affairs with a lot more happening in a short space of time than what normally took place. Is why the casualty figures are usually on the high side compared to the real thing. Edit - if you're referring specifically to how long it took for one tank to engage another... then no, I don't think CM models that particularly differently than what might occur in 'real life' - again at least from what I've read (having absolutely zero personal experience on the topic). -F
  3. Obviously the turret talk in Commonwealth tanks has been under modeled then, I can't even hear them when I play. -F
  4. Has it been stated whether the graphical representation of the individual soldiers and their position in the game world has a direct bearing on their chances of being hit at all or is the hit chance random or statistical or some such? I can't remember. (Edit - I mean at the squad level). -F
  5. For those interested in this stuff (lol, wink) this is also an excellent document on Eastern Front stuff... SMALL UNIT ACTIONS DURING THE GERMAN CAMPAIGN IN RUSSIA Various formats https://archive.org/details/PAM20-269 HTML page here, has better quality pics http://www.allworldwars.com/Small-Unit-Actions-During-German-Campaign-in-Russia.html Also here's a link to a pdf of US forces small unit actions. Two from France, one Italy and one Pacific. http://www.history.army.mil/html/books/100/100-14/CMH_Pub_100-14.pdf -F
  6. Probably won't be up for long.. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DN63OCE -F
  7. I've read one in book entitled Small Unit Actions on the Eastern Front that talks about a KV blocking a road in 41 too (not the one where they use 88's). Has a picture of an SS man being hit by defensive fire from the tank as he makes an assault IIRC. It's packed away so I can't check the details right now. Edit - picking around the net I found this, I've not looked at the book for many years but this does look like the content I recall. Now I scan it I can't see the story I mentioned although there is http://www.allworldwars.com/Small-Unit-Actions-During-German-Campaign-in-Russia.html Now I scan it I can't see the story I mentioned although there is this, search for this title to go straight to the article A RUSSIAN TANK OBSTRUCTS GERMAN ADVANCE IN SOUTHERN LITHUANIA. Edit 2 - this might be the same material as a pdf, am downloading now https://archive.org/details/PAM20-269 -F
  8. Totally off topic... Still umpiring Hugh?? Gave me a laugh.
  9. Again you guys are missing the point by taking an elitist attitude as it pertains only to your own very well informed opinion on the topic of CM. If you don't understand the idea of baiting many and varied hooks to catch more fish, no point wasting anymore time on the point. As to the thinly veiled insults JRMC1879 go **** yourself. -F
  10. I started with BF when they were BTS playing Actung Spitfire and Over the Reich. I still have and very occasionally play them. Put much more time into CM titles though, been installed on every system I've owned since release. I have in fact managed to keep the exact same install/setup for each game from PC to PC over the years (touch wood that continues) so I still have some ancient screens of things like the 232 clown car (or was it 223?? I can't remember).
  11. The review score on a game's home page on Steam comes straight from Metacritic. So whether you like it or not it is a tool used by a lot of people to judge a product. The sites popularity is indicative of the influence what's written there has. Whether that's the way it should be or whether people should put stock in the comments posted there etc is moot. It's the way it currently is and if you care about CM it would be good to get on there and post it's praises. IIRC BF has already said they wouldn't do Steam anyway. -F
  12. And this is basically how I use it too. See the proportion of good to poor reviews and what people's complaints are and whether they are consistent across various sites. It is fairly simple to spot genuine vs axe grinding reviews. -F
  13. When I come across a game I know nothing about Metacritic is one of the first places I check. Burying your head in the sand thinking it's irrelevant I think is doing CM and BF a disservice. No matter how niche a game CM is BF is a business and needs to sell units. Plus expanding the player base is not a bad thing IMO. -F
  14. Someone will be along with more details but in essence there's a great deal of things that go into working out how good one tank performs compared to another. The equipment, crew quality, condition of the crew etc. When all is said and done though it's the consensus of most players that the other guy's tanks seem to out perform your own with annoying regularity -F
  15. Not done it for a while but I try and wait right up until the infantry start their attack before bringing out HTs to support them or even just after. As seems apparent using them on their own draws lots of return fire which is often fatal. Maybe gunners and TC's get taken out too easily, hard to really say to be honest with only anecdotal evidence. -F
  16. Paraphrasing... Steve said parachuting dogs in next patch. 'Bout time I say. -F
  17. The boys have to kill one at least one of Bil's hulking beasts. Come on lads make Lieutenant Colonel Blacker (ahem, and Major Jefferis) proud! -F
  18. Great stuff, I have Die Deutschen Luftwaffe series as well on VHS so nice to grab these too. Thanks
  19. If you do mean jagged edged shadows I got rid them in my setup by enabling V-Sync.... Admittedly that's in CM2.01, not MG with the new shaders etc, but maybe worth a try? Good luck -F
  20. 7 episodes of the Die Deutschen Panzer series are available at this guy's channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRewB1fmpr8&list=PL3483332C348F7FB0 A great deal of excellent footage with a ~50 minute episode devoted to each of the major marks of panzer, one on stugs, another on SPG's, one on armoured cars and half tracks. The only one not there is the episode on light tanks. I have these on VHS but haven't gotten around to getting them converted to something digital. Highly recommended. -F
  21. Heresy!! But more seriously, I too would like the pop up info a la in CM1. -F
  22. Get 7zip. It's small, efficient and handles just about all file compression formats. http://www.7-zip.org/ -F
