  1. I'm curious about this RAMdisk thingy. Does installing CM on it count as one activation ?
  2. I don'k know if this can be of any use for historical scenario designers, but there it goes : http://www.worldcat.org. A worldwide library catalogue. Just checked the book you could not get your hands on : here it is (please note that you can search for similar books by clicking on the items listed in the "Similar Items" section). Truth is only one US library has a copy of it : Florida State University. But 16 british libraries and 2 dutch do have one (including Arnhem's library ). I'm pretty confident you could manage to have one lended to you through the Inter Library Loan service (ILL). It's not free of charge but it can definitely help you out. But maybe you guys already knew about that ? PS : I'm a librarian myself. Couldn't resist doing some propaganda
  3. So Michael, if a tombstone is not that horizontal stone we have in our french cemeteries, what would be the correct word in English ? I though the vertical one was called a headstone !? I noticed that in English you have two words which I thougt were synonyms but are not : graveyard and cemetery. "A graveyard (from Old English graf "pit"; yairden "garden, open place")[1] is any place set aside for long-term burial of the dead, with or without monuments such as headstones. In countries with a Christian tradition it is usually located near and administered by a church. From the early 19th century, new burying grounds were frequently founded as cemeteries, which are burying grounds that are separate from a church or parish." [source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graveyard]
  4. Sure, the photo I posted is pretty recent but it shows you that most of the time a french grave comes with a large horizontal stone (is this what you English-speaking folks call a tombstone ?) (mind you I'm not a graveyard grog nor an English grog ). There will be also some family mausoleums as wel (that is, only for the wealthy families). Basically, the lower you income, the plainest the tombstone. Short version is : CMBN needs tombstones
  5. Now that you say it... Indeed graveyards in french villages do not look at all like they presently do in the game. Here is an example : Nothing like lawn + crosses like in the US or GB (?). To my mind the only french graveyards that look like that are the military cemeteries.
  6. +1 for Juri JS' proposition. I know Steel Panthers and CM are two different beasts, but if the player could manually select a unit and disable some of its weapons with a simple click, maybe this would do the trick, wouldn't it ? Imagine a sniper team where only the guy carrying the scoped rifle could open up ;-) (AI could could always override this limitation if said unit was engaged by the enemy) (and the more experienced the unit, the more likely it would obey the limitation set by the player). I know, it's easier said than done, but let me just dream on a little bit :-) I trust Battlefront will eventually find a solution. See how CM is getting better with every patch...
  7. + 1 for Line clicking !!! I'd also really appreciate having a toggle "Show All Move Paths" ON/OFF like there was in the old CM (IIRC).
  8. FWIW I found this piece of information : "However, there were sizable battalions of French tanks in Le Havre, Brest and Cherbourg – all three of which saw heavy action with a mixture of S35s, H35/38/39s, R35s, B1bs and other bits and pieces, including B1b Flammpanzers and H35s and UEs with 28/32cm rockets strapped to them. Some or all of these units may have received redundant S35s from 21. Panzer-Division. There was also a small panzer training battalion in the Cotentin, which saw action against US Airborne forces." Source : theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=250356 (by R Mark Davies, 03 Dec 2011) Maybe Normandy 1944 grogs will be able to confirm this ? I would really be glad if some captured french tanks could make it into the CMBN vehicle pack...
  9. I have been reading Battlefront forum for many years now and there is something unique here, something that can't be found in any other place on the net. I'm absolutely unable to explain what it consists of, but I know one thing : Michael Emrys' sig lines were a part of this magic . When, a few days ago, he decided to delete them just because some newcomer thought they were too long to read... I fell down from my seat ! What utter nonsense was this ? It's not a matter that lies in the hands of Michael Emrys. It doesn't belong to him anymore. It's a part of Battlefront's spiritual war treasure. It's an Institution (with a capital I) and as such it can't be deleted (heresy !!!). Therefore, I make a call for mobilization. Michael Emrys' sig lines must be restored to their old glory. Otherwise the sky might fall upon us all (you've been warned). So, old Battlefront grognards, please make one step forward and answer my call ! A moi la vieille garde !
  10. 27 dollars to ship a plain DVD to Europe is a bit hard for my wallet, but hey, this is Battlefront's new baby, so..... pre-ordered !!!! (but if the Free French don't eventually find their way to Italy within a future module, I'll really get mad at you guys )
  11. Are you really ordering your Panzer IV to go "fast" through rough montainous terrain ? I hope you've got an experienced mechanic in case you lose a track... or two
  12. Well there might be a problem with LOS not being the same as LOF. There are many trees on the map and it's rather tricky to guess wether a given unit will be able to fire or not to a specific location it has got LOS to. For example, I had a Brixia team take position in front of your dug in bazooka team near the dead 75mm gun. The first turn nothing happened : crew members stared at the objective and that was all. Suspecting a LOS/LOF issue was involved, I moved the Brixa one action spot to the right and it did the trick. Of course, you can't do that with an infantry gun... I must say I've done my best to keep my grunts and vehicles away from your guns' LOS, mainly by trying to hide behind tree foliage. Maybe you could start the scenario as US and test if your infantry guns can fire at action spots in the open ?
  13. +10. By chance would you happen to have a paypal account ? I'd definitely like to buy you a drink to thank you !
  14. Ultradave, I was wondering why your two 75 mm guns were silent. I thought : "Those Americans have got nerves of steel. They won't open up until they get a decent target in their sights..." Now I know that even italian covering fire can pin US paratroopers effectively . And those Brixia mortars are the kings of the day !
  15. So we're gonna have a Monte Cassino scenario without the french north african troops ? Is this a sick joke ? Come on, Battlefront ! Why on earth is it so hard to bring the Free French in when AFAIK they fought in Italy with american weapons and vehicles ? I'm sorry but I really don't get it.
  16. What I would like to see in a near future is at least one alternative "knocked out" model for each vehicle available in the game. What I'm not asking for, however, is special animations like flying turrets or decals for every hit. Just something relatively easy to implement and that would make a huge difference as far as immersion is concerned ! Now if modders were allowed to produce some more alternative "knocked out" models, it would make BF job easier and our gaming experience better (even if I doubt that this possible).
  17. This Italian officer was told to hold his trench in front of "Casa Nostra" and so he did : 14 kills with his automatic rifle ! One can see a carpet of dead GIs all over the railway... Too bad his family name is not shown. Another unknown sodier I guess.
  18. 40 (already !) and started playing Battlefront games with CMAK. I've tried to play traditional wargames a long time ago but could not stand the rules (just remember how difficult it was to figure out LOS in ASL ) So I dumped all that cardboard and paper and boarded the PC train with Panzer General (sweet memories !), then had a true love affair with Steel Panthers. But one day CMAK got in the way and I never played SP again. Battlefront got it right, period. I'll stick with them until the end. Oh, and reading their forum is an infinite source of pleasure thanks to the good old community of English speaking grognards. Thanks to all of you guys ! Très bonne année 2013 à tous ! PS : I'd love to start a CMBN v.2.0 pbm game. Please send me a private message if you are interested.
  19. Now that my tenner has been (bloody well) spent, I demand some 2.0 action Tiny or small QB or scenario, anyone ? I'm all ears...
  20. Something was missing from CMFI but I could not put my finger on it. Now I know !!!! ;-) Thank you very much for you work ! It makes the whole CM2X experience so much better...
  21. I know it's too late now, but I can't help thinking : "Had Bill used a target armor arc, his PIV would have probably ignored the american HQ squad and taken the Sherman by surprise"... As you know exactly where you target will stand, if I were in your boots I'd go for an area target so that you don't have to "throw the dice" for the fatal LOS check... Blast it first, then spot it (when it burns :-) My two cents !
  22. Excellent ! A must watch before playing the Brits in CM2 !!! Too bad we don't have the "bloody French" paratroopers yet
  23. England can be proud of Danny Boyle's opening ceremony. Stunning, original and definitely tongue in cheek. Well done lads ! The homage to the NHS was, to my mind, touching. I saw the ceremony on a south american TV channel. The two commentators were so quiet at times that it was hilarious. I guess they did not understand what this was about (and reading some of the posts on this thread I realize that they were not the only puzzled ones ) This was especially true regarding the soundtrack : The jam, Thin lizzy, The specials.... The two commentators only awoke with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Queen and The sex pistols In the end, as far as I'm concerned, the only true let down was McCartney. PS : with British pop and rock music being so huge, it must have been a pain for Boyle to chose the soundtrack. I was ready to write a formal letter of complaint when eventually Pink Floyd had its go with the fireworks. Dark side of the moon. Brilliant ! PS : I am the only one to think that the world would be a very grim place without the Brits ?
  24. Thanks for your answer. Cease fire eventually worked but it took two PBM turns.
