ZPB II
Well, it's been an awfully long time... I'm looking for good books, documentaries, movies and websites about the Soviet war in Afghanistan and on a similar tangent, Chechnya. Let those recommendations flow.

Ron
This is an excellent documentary, Afghantsi , very brutal and honest commentary. It used to be freely available online, not sure now, but here is a short clip
Schmoly War
Some of the most lopsided and crazy battles of the chechen war that you might not know about: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimry_fighting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kizlyar_raid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_for_Height_776 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Komsomolskoye http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_Zhani-Vedeno_ambush
dima
Not quiet what youre looking for but nevertheless a good read and its free. http://www.cast.ru/eng/?id=386 A good book about military history of the conflict between Russia and Georgia. Holy smokes, they translated that book into English?! I've red it in Russian and it was a great read! So yea, by all means anyone who is remotely interested in the state of modern Russian military should read it. At least the section about detailed war chronology. It was only a 5-day war so it is very detailed.
bodkin
Thanks! Those will keep me busy for a while I found this short clip rather mesmerizing: I love this little video, just a crew of guys in a foreign country fighting a war they may not understand but for some reason the comradery comes through. Love the Bruce Lee pics in the APC and for some reason it reminds me of Apocalyspe Now even if the're just driving through the countryside, maybe it's because the guy with the moustache reminds me of the chef.

shauny1987
Anyone know a good book on the subject? It's a subject i've just not gotten around to reading about yet, but interests me greatly! I've heard 'The bear that went over the mountain' is good, any comments on this? First I'd like the soviet perspective, as paradoxically the Mujahadeen view is the most commonly understood in this conflict, I believe anyway. Likely because it's simple - a defensive war. Also i found this: Its in russian but stil quite interesting (for us non Russian speakers out there )
Schmoly War
Bear went over the mountain: Theres a decent intro to it from David Glantz. I guess its hard to be objective about war without going into what Glantz calls "military fable" and "politicial diatrabe". Anyways here it is: http://www.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?AD=ADA316729&Location=U2&doc=GetTRDoc.pdf

Vin
A movie about a battle during the 2nd Chechen war, shown mainly from the Russian side. It is a made for TV movie that was filmed in Russia. The dialogue is in German, but closed captioning is available in English and other languages. If you have the patience to watch it there is a lot of good action throughout the movie. After watching a few minutes of the action scenes I think I'm going to watch the entire movie even though I won't be able to understand what is being said. Erwin
Yes. Sort of a Russian "Vietnam" film re Afghanistan complete with "Apocalypse Now" style helicopter attacks. I may watch it also...
Sandokan
Wait a moment. If this is a Russian-Italian co-production, have I to presume there is a version dubbed in Italian, too? My knowledge of russian is close to nil, but with italian is all another matter!
Degsy
Hi Sandokan, good call. The Italian title was "La ritirata Afgana" and the star is Michele Placido, who plays Major Bandura. The IMDB entry is here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098990/, and there's a link to a full synopsis on that page. I've found versions in Italian and Czech on Amazon but nothing with English sub titles.
