Sixxkiller
Wow, Patriot was just so broken haha. The Gulf War in 36 seconds, and you didnt understand any of it haha.
Secondbrooks
Hmm... I've grown to be very picky. Back in older days i could play total ****e and not to be angry of it enough to care. That has started to appear few years ago. There-fore i've probably reach level of gaming veteran. No? The list: ArmA and ArmA2. Not that they are bad, but Operation Flashpoint just rocked enough lotz. TES IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3. Not that they are bad, but compared to TES III: Morrowind and Fallout they were lame: unimaginative&cheesy. Oh! And my Amiga 500 was some sort let down as it had somehow busted additional memory-chip which didn't co-operate with most games which were cool. Killed my gaming hobby for few years, but as i was young kid back then i really just didn't care so much. Now days i would probably end up drinking my salary and beating my wife from such event.
Patrocles
this is probably gonna be an unpopular topic on the eve of the release of les grognards but here goes: what was your biggest let down in terms of games you anticipated and bought? for me it is easy, Myth III: The Wolf Age. it was highly anticipated sequal to myth 2: soulblighter and myth: the fallen lords (both by bungie) but wolf age was made by a newly formed group of developers and published by take2 interactive. the game was a total bomb failure, and many hardcore myth players never considered the 3rd installment to be canonical the 2nd biggest letdown i've ever had with a videogame was ETW. CMSF by far after the brilliance of CMBO, CMBB, and CMAK! What a piece of junk on release (dangers of signing release contracts and "getting caught with your pants down")! The patches have helped but still don't like the game.
Stalins Organ
The very first game I ever bought back in 1983 or 84, was "Knights of the Desert" by SSI - & it was pathetic even then! I'd been playing an older Nth Africa game on a friends Apple II with the 40x40 block graphics that was better! Recently - "Commander: Europe at war" sucked as a simulation.
gunnergoz
I have to say that I'm still a sucker for new wargames and buy them even if they don't sound quite "well baked" yet...and invariably they end up being trashed off the HD and never opened again. I have managed to not buy E:TW largely because of what I consider an obnoxious agent (Steam) and the reviews of that game to date have made me glad I did not spend the bucks. So perhaps I am learning. HOI 3 was my last major mistake and I don't plan to ever buy from that bunch again, no matter how tantalizing the prospects seem to be. No amount of beer and scotch can make me like those games. Oddly enough, now I mostly play variants of Civ4, including FF2 (and variants) and H3K. The new Tropico 3 piques my interest, I must say though.
ParaBellum
1944: Across The Rhine. What a terrible game.

Wildhack
Another vote for Patriot. It was a long time ago, but I do remember anticipating that game for what seemed like years. And then finally getting it and quickly giving up in shear frustration. I think I may have even questioned myself at the time as to whether I was just too dumb to comprehend something so deep... I'll also admit that I'm a fan of MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role playing games), and have been greatly disappointed in all the recent offerings. The dumbed down, linear, so called WoW clones. I do currently play EVE Online, but I long for a better/newer/different adult oriented 'sandbox'.
Joe Shaw
1944: Across The Rhine. What a terrible game.Agreed ParaBellum ... a horrible game that I was really looking forward to. And how about Distant Guns ... I was a big Norm Koger fan and played Age of Rifles to death back in the day, but this one turned out to be nearly unplayable. I had done a good deal of Russo Japanese Naval wargaming and thought this one was going to be great ... no so much. While it doesn't exactly fit into this category since it never did get to the launching pad, Sid Meier was promoting and developing a game in which you actually played the role of a dinosaur ... but he shut that down when they discovered they couldn't come up with a way to make it ... you know ... a game. Too bad, I was really looking forward to it. Then, after that great game Sid Meier's Gettysburg, what does he do ... another version of Civilization ... just what the world needed. Michael Emrys
Too bad, I was really looking forward to it. That's okay, Joe. I think we can all agree that you make a perfect dinosaur already. Michael
__Yossarian0815[jby]
Elite 2 was certainly a let down given how much fun the original was. Realistic space combat sounds good until you realize that it really means space fighters jousting against each other with their lasers from kilometers away when the target is just a few pixels in size, and zooming past in a split second. It would have been a fun space flight simulator, but even then it just sucked because of the time it took even at maximum time acceleration to travel between planets. But she was pretty. Pretty, dumb and buggy. IIRC Elite II not only dumb and buggy but the designer insisted on making it fit on a 1,44MB Disk. This when games on CDs were already available. (My favorite Elte was Elite plus on the Amiga, essentially the original C64 game with color graphics.)
Ron
I second Across the Rhine, such promise followed by such bitterness - great manual though MoO3 Detroit - I played this for some time before realizing nothing you did mattered.
Sergei
;1158236'](My favorite Elte was Elite plus on the Amiga' date=' essentially the original C64 game with color graphics.)[/quote'] You should try out Oolite, it's an Elite super-plus and supports expansions as well (new graphics, ships, missions etc.). Just be warned, it can be a ruthless and frustrating experience, as the gameplay is not (much) changed from 1984... but it wouldn't feel right otherwise.
Popfreak
M1 Tank Platoon was a great game, M1 Tank Platoon 2 was not Gunship was a great game, Gunship 2000 was not Both games by MicroProse. Close Combat 4 and even more so Close Combat 5 were also huge dissapointments to me.... Pop
Sergei
Gunship was a great game, Gunship 2000 was not What are you talking about, Gunship 2000 (published in 1991) was fantastic! Are you sure you don't mean the Gunship! sequel made ten years later?
undead reindeer cavalry
yeah, Gunship 2000, at least on Amiga, was excellent. a real gem. second the opinions on Elite 2 and M1 Tank Platoon 2. most of the arcade conversions for C64 were truly saddening experiences. some good ones too, like Wizard of Wor.
-E
My biggest letdown was B-17 II. Highly anticipated multi-player game. Each player could crew a position on the same bomber, while other players crewed escort planes or enemy fighters. It was released with zero multi-player capability. As for Patriot, you guys are nuts. I recently (no kidding) picked it up for $8 delivered, so I could finally see what all the crying was about back then. It's a great game! You can move arrows a little bit and hit play! Then you can hit pause and move the arrows back and hit play again! And the graphics (for the day), just blow away it's predecessor! (Pong) Face it, you were all just spoiled by Donkey Kong and Miss Pac-Man, and too shallow to appreciate the depth of arrows you could move a little (in Patriot).
General Jack Ripper
Usually I am very conservative when I buy games. I research the titles for months after they are released before making a decision. That's probably why I didn't buy CMSF until Marines v1.11 came out. However, after playing Rome: Total War and loving it, I bought Empire: Total War when it came out. I finally got to play it last week. Don't get me wrong, it is a great game (now), but I don't like paying for something and waiting a year for it to be patched up to playability. Empire Earth was another dissapointment. I think I played it a grand total of four times. Divided Conquest: American Nation was a big failure. I installed the game, started the campaign, and twenty minutes into gameplay "a famine has struck your state!" and all of my brave confederate troops starved to death during the battle of Bull Run. The Game is still in the original box in the back of my game drawer. Now that was a waste of $40. Anyway, I learned my lesson. Don't believe people who write game reviews. Wait until you have feedback from the community first.
Michael Emrys
Don't believe people who write game reviews. Wait until you have feedback from the community first. Amen. There was a time long ago when game reviewers could offer useful insight into games, but I began to notice about ten years ago that they had pretty much universally become nothing more than shills for the game companies. I stopped subscribing to the magazines and simply never bothered to read online reviews. Michael
Didz
My biggest ever let down was Napoleon 1813. It was just so close, but epic failed just because of poor coding.
gautrek
My biggest let down at the moment is CoH.I got this game about a year ago and had a quick play through the single player. Its got lots of faults and the health bars on vehicles pisses me off no end.But i uninstalled it when none of my mates got it.I would have gone multiplayer but by the time i got the game everyone had been playing for months so i would have got spanked every time i tried to play. But one of my mates has just got the game so we can multiplayer. So i downloaded CoH and OF off steam and i can't connect online for some reason. This has been going on for a week now. So this week i deleted CoH from steam and installed my CD copy. What a joke. 3 frigging nights updating and patching what seems like about a million patches. All to play an average RTS.talk about a let down.We have been waiting 3 nights now to have a 1v1 bash.Plus i'm not entirely sure that when i reinstall OF on steam(due to both games being installed and un installed at the same time nice one valve) that it will not overright my hopefully working copy of CoH. Ihate relic at the moment
daisy
Blitzkrieg 2 was utter rubbish compared to BK 1 - poor gameplay, small maps, poor 3d graphics. Silent Hunter 4's gameplay was pretty bad compared to Silent Hunter 3. And of course American Conquest : Divided Nation - My PC was a bit outdated when i bought this game so i blamed a lot of my CTD's rtc and laggy graphics on my PC. So i upgraded to a dual core CPU and now the game installs but i have CTD when i start it up. BIggest letdown though: Al of the Panzer General games after Panzer General 1.
-E
Silent Hunter 4's gameplay was pretty bad compared to Silent Hunter 3. What was wrong with it? (I never even thought of getting it, as I played out the Pacific sub war in Silent Service II. *grin*)
