  1. Apparently as the only member her to have ever served on an Iowa class Battleship, let me clear up a few things. 1) All 4 Iowa's still have all 3 16'' turrets. There was some talk back in the late 80's with the Missouri and the Wisconsin of trying to remove the 3rd turret to make vertical launch tubes for missles, and also more talk of an under deck hanger of some sorts, but it couldnt be done as the turrets just weighed too much and she ship needed the weight to remain stable. 2)All 4 Iowa's carried 8 ABL capable of carrying 32 Tomahawk Missles and then another set of launchers(not armored for 16 harpoon anti ship missles, As far as the tomahawks go, and I doubt anyone will ever find any true reference to this but some of the tomahawks were nuclear tipped . 3)Each Iowa started with 10 dual 5"38 gun mounts 5 on each side of the ship, in the 80's reto the removed 2 mounts from each side, leave 12 5'38 barrells, 6 in 3 mounts on each side of the ship. On a side note the Marine manned mount, which I was a crew of was the only 5" mount to get a fire mission in Beruit(i guess it was symbolic, Marines supporting Marines) Anyway, we took out a Sryrian gun battery, spotters confirmed 22 killed. Inside the mount some sailor art was drawn depicting a silloutte of a man with a raghead with a circle around it a a line going through it diagonally with"scatch 22" written above. 4) There are lots of reasons I think they were retired. There used to be a website around called Warships1.com ran buy a guy named Guy Derdall or something like that, and there was a poster there that was pretty high up in the chain of commaned at Long Beach Naval shipyard that refitted 2 of them. wish i remembered his name, anyway, his though was that the 16" barrell liners and extra barrels were all goneand no way to reproduce them. 5)With the range of the 16" barrels at about 25 miles there was in development in the late 80's a round capable of ranging out to 100 miles, If the BB's had stayed in service im sure it's reasonable to assume that todays technlogy we would certainly 100 mile and more ranges from the 16's
  2. M1 Tank Platoon was a great game, M1 Tank Platoon 2 was not Gunship was a great game, Gunship 2000 was not Both games by MicroProse. Close Combat 4 and even more so Close Combat 5 were also huge dissapointments to me.... Pop
  3. Dye, better hire some black actors or else Spike Lee will be pissed. Speaking of Lee's movie. It came out on RedBox this week, it wasnt worth the $1 it cost to rent it... Pop
  4. Havnt seen any of his history posts in a while
  5. Hi all, I must say that my favorite game of all time was a long long time ago. It was called AV8B Harrier Assualt, and the a later updated version called SVGA Harrier Assualt. Basically you were a Harrier pilot flying support of a USMC MEU assulting the island of Timor. It was alot of fun. Here is a link to a download page, but I cannot get it to work. I would forever be in your graces if one of your computer heads could try downloading it and get it to work. Thanks, Pop http://www.migman.com/ref/1990_combat/SVGAHarrier/SVGAHarrier.htm
  6. Are the cubs in town that weekend? No way I could make to Chi town without bringing the wife. maybe i could leave her at the holiday inn in Skokie......
  7. Amtracs do suck big time. Team spirit '87 found me in one for about 20 days maybe give or take a couple. It was very uncomfortable. And regardless of the smoke in your face if your got to stand with your upperbody out the upper hatches it was better than being cramed inside. I fully believe that it was my time in that trac that allows me to go to sleep under any condion. I have a really good pic of our platoon from TS'87 posing with our track, If someone wants to host it for mke I'll let them post it. You really cant imagine the number of guys we fit(cram) in there. Our platoon, split in 2 squads, plus 2 or 3 mg teams from weapons plt, and also the trac crew
  8. Yep, it was him. the guy was a disgrass, he actually was proud that he had ribbons on his chest that he had no clue what they were or were for As for joining the Marines........ Go for it..... Once a Marine always a Marine, you dont see that in the other branches. Oh and the Marines are now SF with the Marines detone unit.
  9. I believe a MEU is made up of three ships, not including escorts. Semper Fi! Pop
  10. Just wanted to say Semper Fi to all my Marine brothers in here. Pop CPL USMC MARDET USS New Jersey ACo 1/5 ECO 2/24
  11. Marine line units i.e. grunt companies routinly take WM's along with them on patrol, and the WM's routinly engage the enemy with their rifles just as the grunts do. Is there alot of it I would guess not, but to say what you did is wrong. My leatherneck magazine every month seems to show more and more women assigned to FSSG units getting in the trenchs with the male Marines.
  12. Good story, except Bingo night was Monday!!!!!
  13. Plaeeeeeeese. Served aboard a WWII Battleship that was recommissioned 4 times and finally went down for the count in 1991. Now she's a great museum </font>

  15. Yet, bring on that 1st expansion pack!!!!! BF, I think ya'll should have just kept mum on CMSF, until release date. I think everyone should just chill and let them finish the game before ripping it apart.
  16. I see a "Priceless" commercial out of this thread soon. BTW, Steve, Great news with CM:SF I have no worries it will be everything you guys say it will be. I remember a long time ago during an E-mail exchange with you, during the CMBB beta testing I think that you said something "You'll really love some of the things coming in the future" Looking forward to CM:SF, especially the Marine module. I hope it works on my laptop, need any more testers? Pop
  17. USMC 82-87, Marine Detachment USS New Jersey in Beruit '83 Then I was with 1st Bn 5th Marines.
  18. Canuck, Interesting posts. I am willing to bet that you brak down and buy the game as soon as you can like most people will. If you are definatley not going to buy the game until the price drops considerably then why are you hanging around the boards? I'm not going to buy Wartcraft 3, so I dont hang around their boards. I am going to buy GIC so I do hang around their boards, same with CMBB. Look forward to playing you in the future... Pop
