So this marks the start of WWII? The freestate of Danzig might beg to differ. Not to mention the minority(?) in Austria who were against annexation. The rape of Nanking was two years earlier. The world war appears to have been well under way by 1939, the Polish invasion only marks the date the allies realized that it was.

There has always been conflicts around the globe at any one time!

The invasion of Poland which prompted the British and the French (and their respective collonies and dominions) to declare war on Germany made it officially a WORLD WAR.

Prior to this event I would describe the other events you mentioned as localised conflicts.

Although, if we wanted to get really pedantic (and why wouldn't we?) still at that point it was more like France and Commonwealth vs. Germany. You don't call the invasion of Iraq Third World War just because countries around the world joined the operations. It REALLY turned global in 1941, with Barbarossa, Pearl Harbor and Afrika Korps. This global phase ended in spring 1945, after that it was a more localized World vs. Japan match.

But I think the name 'World War' was first applied to this war because it was again the Anglo-French alliance against Germany-Austria, and there could only be one "Great War". So it wasn't even meant to make sense at first other than for propaganda ("see, it's the Kaiser's Huns coming again! buy bonds!").

I dont know if this is a date anyone should celebrate....

IMO absolutely. The hundreds of murdered Germans and the thousands in polish concentration camps and the tens of thousands Germans under Polish occupation were glad, that that the Wehrmacht finally was coming to help them.

That certain forces in Britain and France turned this Polish-German war into a European war, and later, that the same forces in Wall Street turned it into a World War, doesn't change anything of the just and long overdue attack on Poland.

All it needs is a laugh track.

It's just that Steiner14's a German National Socialist. No, I'm not kidding.

Heh, could have been sure there was some kind of sarcasm in his post. Well if any other then Hitler did it one could say that East Prussia was occupied by the Polish. But then you are fishing up some history there, because the Prussians conquered it from [...]

If our dear Steiner14 really can't see the evil parts of the Werhmacht under Hitler, I guess he's not only a National Socialist, but also blind and deaf :D

By the way, the mother of my grandfather (whom i've never known unfortunately) was from Konigsberg East-Prussia and considered herself German, orso have I heard. I have met her once but unfortunately she was demented at that time and I was 5 or something. I remember I didn't like her :)

Not that I think that Kalinigrad should now belong to Germany, it is an interesting fact.

Yeah, but there was fighting all round the world (albeit that that outside Europe was rather small scale).

I've heard the Napoleanic War described as the first World War (note the capitalisation) for very much that reason.
