I apologise to BFC for all the WW2 whiners

Personally I prefer historical games to "near future", and WW2 ahead of all the other periods you might have been the subject of this title.

But I'm sure the game will be great despite this minor flaw!! ;)

However I can't really forgive all the "ww2 whiners" with their vitriolic attacks on you for the decision - what a bunch of cry babies!!

I find it difficult to express how little I share their attitudes - the written word is inadequate, and apparently it'll be years before I can give them the arse spanking they deserve virtualy !!

Hehe, thanks Mike.

You know we honestly excpect some people to be dissapointed, and we are truely sorry that they are. All we have asked is that they understand we wanted do make something different for the first game in the new engine...myself, Ive been making models of WW2 vehicles for 5 years now and I can tell you its a hugh bunch of fun making a BMP with opening hatches, interior, etc instead smile.gif

That being said we also expected some of the nuts we have had tp deal with as well, calling us every name under the sun. Why people cant just be a little respectful when putting forward their opinions I have never understood, but after moderating the political forum for a while you do kinda get used to it. ;)

Tease!

Are you still making the models on a mac and IIRC weren't you using a program that would only work in OS9 for the CM1 AFVs?

Are the skins going to have enhanced texture bump mapping for the little details to save on polys etc? I couldn't quite tell but are the tyres on the screnie stryker done using bump mapping as Steve? or you were very proud of the shadows across the tread pattern.

Lastly will the wheels steer when in motion?

Hi Wicky!

Actually the Mac program was only used for texture mapping the models in the previous versions, and that was only becuase the engine was written to support is.

The models for CMSF will be made and texture mapped all with a software package called 3D Max (we will be using version 8 once it arrives). Actually I am even texturing them in Max as part of the process so that when I put the models in game they will be pretty much finalised.

Bump mapping may or may not make it into the very first version, we need to see how time goes. This isnt so important for modern vehicles but we really want to get it in there for the zimmerit in German WW2 vehicles. The thing to remember about bump mapping though is that it does also takes up VRAM, so we do need to carefull balance between this and the detail we would like to get onto the texture itself (for instance we could have a texture and bump map on a vehicle or one texture with twice the resolution and detail...sometimes the later will look much better).

As for the tyres turning we certainly hope so...not sure yet though smile.gif

Thanks Dan for explaining what you're up to when not here.

Your ambitions with the zimmerite sound ambitious and will hopefully go some way to placate the doubters of what is achievable with implementatations of the new engine with decent future hardware.

Presumably the graphics files will be deeply buried and not as easily accessible as before ie. vast relatively disorganised bmp data folders. Similar in a way that was a pain in the mac version of CMBO? How easy/complicated will accessing the graphic files and modding be?

I think there's a post somewhere in here giving more info on the modding.

One texture per model, with all the parts being in that one texture rather than a bunch of textures per model.

Or so I recall. I'd have to use the search to really find out ;)

As for difficulty... what makes you think it will be more difficult? They've specifically listed what will and what will not be mod-able (another post somewhere). Basically the same sets of things as was in CMx1, i.e. the graphics.

Wicky,

Dan corrcted you a bit, but there is more. That program only worked in 8.6. That's right... I used a 7 year old OS until CMAK was finished. Gotta love Apple's backwards compatibility smile.gif

One other slight correction. All the CMBO models and some of the BB models were made on the old Mac program by yours truly! KwazyDog was just an inquisitive young pup on the Forums while the first batch of models were being made. With the low polygon requirements I was actually able to do a damned fine job if I do say so myself. But with the extra details that started showing up on CMAK models I figured I should leave modeling to the professionals. For CM:SF I just sit there and say "wow..." because no way could I do that :D

Oh of course, I was pretty much thinking form the point of view of when I came onboard! smile.gif

Yes, I would guess what, 90% of CMBO models were made by you Steve in the Mac problem? I came onboard in between CMBO and CMBB but we certainly reused as much as we could from CMBO!

Dan

PS : Hehe, now that I think about it I think I did a couple of the CMBO models Steve...I remember you being, err, confused by a certain Sherman model I sent through and after that I remember having a nightmare making the Humber and Priest smile.gif

I'd like to say how brilliant I find the first post. I too am usually a fan of WWII stuf over all other subject matter. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that this is going to be pretty darn good and I certainly intend to approach it with an open mind rather than go off half-cocked at this point. Besides, it sure can be fun to play with the gee-wiz gizmos from time to time.

Now the politics behind modern conflicts vs WWII is another matter, but I don't see as how that impacts how enjoyable the game will be.

Give us the high sign when it arrives, so interested parties can start bitterly complaining about the change and the betrayal of all things CM it signifies.

Thanx!

Does anybody remember the "Zimmernut" thread? I'm a lurker, so I do, but it was about squirrels using nuts to destroy vehicles and zimmernut being used to project the vehicles.

And I hate to be a cliche, but I'm sooooooooooooooooo drunk. The UW team just lost to Oregon, and we're drowning our sorrows in vodka. You're lucky I'm such a good spellerian even when I'm drunk that I edit this ****. Yeah.
