Heck that is better than the other cover that CDV has been displaying. But I am a bit puzzled though. The centre picture is a real photograph, the bottom two are from CMBB, but the top two seems to be from CMBO? Oh well, it beats the other 'GI Joe cover' any day of the week.

A strange thing though, Amazon.co.uk does not have CMBB listed, while Amazon.fr and Amazon.de has it listed for a September release. But in the CDV interview on Warfarehq.com, it was stated that the initial European September release would be in Germany and the UK, the other countries would assumably follow on a later date. But on the other hand, if one goes into the English version of Cdv.de, one cannot order the UK version of CMBB in their webshop, and the only stated release date is for Germany.

Oh well, we will see what happens.

This is a translation of the Amazon.fr (the french site of Amazon) description

(Sorry it's done with a online translator so it might sound weird.)

The history in the turn by turn : find the sequel of the cult wargame of Battlefront.com, including new units, new missions and the beautiful graphics. The specialists of the second world war and the military strategies assert it: Combat Mission is the most accomplished title in its genre. The team of development realized a work of Titans to plunge the players in the heart of the historic battles of the second world war: exhaustiveness of vehicles and units, modelling of the relief and environments, optimization of the speed of movement of the troops, up to the reach of the shots and the consequences of the air raids! Nothing is left at random! Key points: Wargame in turn by turn in full 3D. At the end of every turn, the orders comply in the form of kinematics. Relive the big fight of the 2nd world war: from the operation Barbarossa ( Eastern Europe) until the landing of 1945, from the Black Sea to the Arctic Circle. A consequent life expectancy. The solo mode proposes not less than 50 scénarii and different operations. A research of realism close to the perfection: units, reliefs of battlefields and missions are exactly modelled and detailed. Combat Mission 2 offers graphics high resolution 3D and sound effects stéreo. Mode of game in turn by turn allowing to establish precise and realistic strategic action plans. Command 6 main nations: France, Germany, the USA, England, Canada and Poland . A complete arsenal: more than 300 different vehicles and more than 600 available units. Combat Mission 2 takes into account the climatic conditions and the schedules of day.

Some part of the description (i put them in bold)are confusing, to say the least.

At first I thought that it was bablefish that was funky as usual, but then I had a look at the said source.

As stated on Amazon.fr:

Commandez les 6 nations principales : France, Allemagne, USA, Angleterre, Canada et Pologne.

My guess is that someone will be beheaded for this. :D

Well, frankly, it's a bit more than just bashing box art and also shows precisely why BFC were correct originally in their marketing strategy.

First off and most important is the fact that the game is NOT called CM2 as this and the previous CDV box art have shown. This may seem trivual to you, but in a marketing sense it is called dilution of your brand. Allowing shoddy operators or your competitors to dilute your brand, your punch, the main message that you are trying to get out to the marketplace is considered very serious by all major companies. It confuses the market as to what you are actually offering and makes you appear disorganised and out of control.

BFC got into this game (from their often restated messages) to provide the best, most accurate wargame possible and to market that game to people who are serious about their accuracy and representation. No matter what these marketing resellers have told BFC to allow them to resell the product under a different banner, it is pretty clear (like a lot of marketing people I have been involved with) that they only want to know as much about the actual product as is necessary to flog it. Selling CM only through battlefront.com may look like a better route as time goes on.

If I was BFC (and I'm not, but I play one on tv) I would get anyone who approaches me to market CMBO, CMBB or any of the later iterations into a room and force them to play me in a TCP/IP match to prove to me that they really knew the product or they'd be out on their arse quick smart.

Do you think it could also could be interpreted as "ending"? That would explain a lot, and would also renew my admiration for the French.

The CDV website can be quite difficult to navigate around, and has conflicting information on it. It seems that the Euro version of CMBB (CM2 :confused: ) will be relaesed later than in the US.

Press release from the CDV website;

22.08.2002

Combat Mission 2 – How’s the weather today?

Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin will hit the shelves this October! Will you be ready by then? If yes, you will need some warm clothes! Everyone who is searching for his comrades: there is a link on the official preview site from CDV to the English forums. It will also, by the way, be very substantial to know that the nicely used weather effects will be either debilitating or beneficial in the game too...

On a different note I think Goanna (above) has an intersting point. It does seem that the marketing for the game in Europe is going to be different to BFC's....

Here's the preceeding CDV press release concerning CMBB;

15.08.2002

Combat Mission 2

When playing Combat Mission 2, you will be introduced to an extensive variety of detailed vehicles and combat units, in more than fifty vast missions and operations. The photo realistic appearances of the units are down to the fact that they have been modelled from their real counterparts from the second world war – details were noted with authenticity in mind.

In some missions you will have to face the Russian army, which although enormous in size at the time, was mainly made up of farmers. These farmers were basically in good physical shape, but completely unskilled in the art of war.

...and the one preceeding that;

07.08.2002

Combat Mission 2 - Preview Screens

The American Developers, Battlefront.com, have excelled themselves! Combat Mission 2, CDV's new strategy game, is already at the preview stage.

Players will be able to find solutions and choose strategies that were engineered in World War 2. The units in the game behave just like their real-life counterparts. For example, the Panther unit is a mighty vehicle with heavy-duty armour. But the engineers who designed it expected a frontal attack and left the tank susceptible for sneaky attacks from the rear!

I don't know if the BFC "brand" is going to suffer as result of this though. From this website;

Battlefront.com's mission is to provide the challenging military minded computer gaming experience that has all but disappeared from the face of corporate gaming today. Our goal is to serve gamers, rebuild our community, and breathe some life back into a hobby whose followers are still here in sizable numbers but have been tossed aside by the Industry.

Sure, it seems that CDV are casting the net wide as it were, I guess it's to attract as many people to the game as possible. Once these people are introduced to the game, they'll realise it's a quality product and that BFC are a quality outfit, and then become hooked like the rest of us ;)

I assume the people at CDV are professionals, and no doubt they know what works best in their respective countries/markets.

Of course, none of the above makes any difference to the end product, (it'll sell it itself IMO), but it's going to be interesting to see what other versions of the box/adverts/press releases/previews etc pop-up over the coming weeks...
