They started to "hate" each other just post- WWII, and still do today. Apparently part of it stems my grandmother getting a job during the war, and not being able to get time off to go see my grandfather *right* when he got back to the US at the return-city (after being on the USS Ingraham when it was kamikazed, but not sunk). They've never gotten a divorce b/c they're too old-fashioned, even after the kids moved out. Anyhow, they can be quite funny, in a *really* sick way. You see they don't really speak to each other, ever, for a few decades now. They pretend to get alone well at family gatherings, but that's it. It's so bad that when my grandmother's little Schnauser dog was alive, her main way of communicating w/ my grandfather was by telling the DOG what her plans were in a Loud Voice. One of their other main commo methods is that they put their plans on the calendar, and then each check the calender rather than speak to each other. I hope your situation never gets that bad, in fact I hope it works out for the best.
