Worth buying for casual gaming?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

i am just about to purchase a new wargame and its a choice of either

1) Cross of Iron

2) CMBB

I already have Close combat 2-5 so i was wondering if CMBB is a better option. I don't have an awful amount of playing time so i was wondering if the learning curve might be a bit too steep for casual play (loved hearts of iron but too deep for casual gaming).

CCBB looks a very good game, but i have a pc built for the likes of oblvion etc......so i worried about the possible issues with a new graphics card (HD3850pro).

I appreciate any feedback and will be buying the winner of the two posts (one in matrix for COI).Please be honest and not just fanboys

Thanks

Hellmut :D

hahahah yeah i expected it as much.

well one thing has helped to sell it for me and its this

http://europeanhistory.about.com/od/gamingresources/tp/aatppcwar.htm

number 4 eh?? looks good to me.

Also your mod link looks very promising for long play.

One major question i would like to ask is...

Is the game a linear experience or do you get to take territories as you see fit?? (like the total war series)

The scenario win conditions vary depending on what you are playing. Some focus on seizing specific objectives (using flags with a points value to simulate the importance of the objective) other actions which are called 'operations' may involve seizing terrain, or reaching the other end of the map.

I've not played the total war series so I am not sure how the CM game compares. Hope this helps smile.gif

Cheers fur noo

Most scenarios are standalone, although as mentioned there are operations which take place on a single map but with several episodes using the same force, perhaps with reinforcements, throughout. Some designers have made sequences of linked scenarios exploring a situation over an extended timeframe. There is no 'campaign' element to the game itself. You generally start each scenario with a different force on unique terrain. It is an engrossing game, not too difficult to learn the controls, but learning to win might take time.

You can improve the out-of-the-box visuals by visiting a community mod site that has an extensive collection of vehicle, uniform, and terrain graphics.

There are also well over a thousand scenarios and operations at the community scenario sites. You can play a new scenario every day for the next three or four years after you've gone through everything on the disk.

If you can get your hands on the SE edition it's worth the trouble. It has extra scenarios, graphics mods, and a mod installer included on a separate disk. (Yoou don't really need a mod installer for mods, but it's nice to have).

The CC series has slicker graphics, but you're always operating in a two-dimensional view of the battlefield. CM tends to get played in different isometric views -- once you get used to seeing a full 3-D environment it's really hard to settle for anything less.

As a clarification, CM is a tactical wargame, not a large scale strategic one with tactical battles, like TW. You will command anything from a platoon to a reinforced battalion, but typically nothing larger than that.

The scope of what CMBB covers means it will have replayability that will literally entertain you for years. Far longer than any other game I have ever played, and that covers roughly 35 years of gaming.

As well Check out Robert Olesens' (RobO) Quick Campaigns (ROQC). You can find it at CM Mods (requres registration) under the designer RobO in the CMAK section. He made it for both CMBB and CMAK.

This makes for a "core" force to be made and used throughout the time period you choose using Excel or printed out charts he provides to keep track of your units. Mostly automated for easy use.

Check out the threads about it in this forum.

Yes the game looks like it would be great if I could get it to run.

The problem is that I’m running very modern hardware (not vista though) and when I installed the demo last night all the words were blank from within the game.

I thought “Ok troubleshooting page

Applied the relevant fixes………..no good

Added 98, Me compat to the exe file no good.

Put the game back to original state, minimized and then full screen……….

Game crashes and no alt/ctrl/del or alt tab will exit.

“Computer recovered from a serious error” was my welcome message on restart.

ARGH!!!!!! I haven’t seen that for ages.

Oh well back to the old drawing board then..

Not having text that can be read is something that crops up from time to time in very specific instances. It is also something that can usually be fixed. Send a description of your system and your problem to support@battlefront.com and they'll probably come back to you with the solution (which is usually something simple like updating your video card drivers). Be sure that you tell them exactly what your very modern hardware is, and what drivers you are using.

It's the best game ever. It's hard to get into, it took me a few tries but I kept coming back because there was something...something...and then it clicked and 5 years later and I'm still playing it.

I'd say it's ideal for casual gaming because it comes alive when you play other people, and that's over email and the turns are a minute long, so you're firing it up, playing a turn for 10 minutes and then either stop or play other turns. So it scales as much as you want.

Of course, you may be thinking /about/ the turns all day :D

Thanks for all the replies,

I have had far too many issues with the running of the demo to warrant a full purchase.

Yes i have all up to date drivers etc.....

All my other games run great so i'm disappointed that this doesn't.

Hate to say it but with the issues here + the problems people have had with the new COI i have decided to buy Sudden Strike 3.

Yes i know it's not as intelligent, but i played it for most of the weekend and it hasn't disappointed me (realism is lacking but it's fun).

Perhaps for casual play this is a better option

Thanks again for all your help

That would certainly disappoint me. I would guess it was a problem with your game, or that you downloaded the mac version for windows, or something simple.

I have a second-line system in most regards, and it runs like a charm on mine. To be honest, I was not thrilled with the demo though, but as someone above posted, there was "something"there, and combine that with a good reputation from battlefront after I had purchased TACOPS before, and I gave it a shot.

Two weeks, and I am glad I did.

No it was the proper download......i have been into computers for too long for that (comp is self built)

every game i have runs like a charm, but they are all modern (apart from CCV but that runs fine)

Oh well if i can pick up a cheap edition from ebaY then i will give the full version a shot.

You have just made a gigantic mistake giving up.

This is a great game(s) and they are worth the effort to make them work on your system. However, I am not sure why you are having trouble.

I have CM on my old rig and my new one (both PC), they work like a charm. My buddy just got a brand new rig, works fine on his system.

Sucks to be you I guess, but I think you gave up way to quick.

It's ok , i am putting it down to being a demo and not the full product. There is also a chance that my new graphics card is having some issues with the game (just because it works with everything else doesn't mean that it will work with this 100% etc.......)

I always get there in the end and i will give it a go.

It was the fact that it crashed my pc (self built, tweaked over years pride and joy etc....)

which upset me a bit.

Grump over now

Hi all,

Ok i went and bought the game.....guess what

1)Game loads

2)I select the resolution

3)Pick my scenario

4)Pick my team

5)Map loads

6)White boxes no text (no anti-aliasing + no anisotropic filtering)

Ok i think, i will have a look at another way of getting rid of that.

7) look around map

8) game freezes

9) No amount of alt-tab , ctrl+alt+del will get me out

10) BSOD

11) "Windows has recovered from a serious error"

ARGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Latest drivers etc.......no spyware etc.....all known fixes tries..............

No other game crashes, my computer runs like a dream.

Have i wasted my money??

Is my HD3850 pro dx10.1 card just too new for this game????

Running xp

I will repeat this in the tech forum

Did you completely remove/Uninstall the demo?

Yeah i use CCleaner which is a great tool for tidying up the registry. Matt form tech-support got back to me and said that there is a huge chance of it being down to my new gpu.

I'm at a loss now
