Another day of Allied heroism

Recommended Posts

On Feb 13, 1945, a fearless fleed of 772 British and 311 American bombers managed to flatten the worthless city of Dresden/Germany.

Approximately 70000 enemy civilians and fugitives was terminated during this war decisive operation.

Hail to the Commander of the Bomberfleet, Air Marshal Sir Arthur Harris.

Let's remember the crew of the five Aircrafts that was shot down by Nazi AA during the attack.

I see a lock comin'...

Really, this stuff has no place here. If you have an axe to grind, Scipio, grind it somewhere else.

I just finished "On Time, On Target: the World War II memoir of a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne." The book was decent (the author was a FO), but the most interesting part was the post-VE commentary.

The trooper spent the immediate days following the ceasefire in a German backwater. The Mayor of the town killed his wife and daughter and then himself the evening the town was captured.

The troopers soon found out why.

Wirbelin was the town's political "camp". It didn't have the engines of death and genocide of more famous camps. The camp commander did find time to hang the intestines of attempted escapees from the barbed wire, though.

Of the 4,000 inmates, following liberation, 1,000 died from malnutrition despite the best medical care the US Doctors on the scene could provide (including providing the food and water they had been without).

General Gavin forced the townspeople to dig the graves and attend the funeral services of the camp's dead (few of the inmates were Jewish, most were political). Over 50 of the townsfolk committed suicide in the following days.

This was a small town and a small camp infested with the cancer of Hitler's National Socialism-- but to me its existence was more poignant and repugnant than the larger camps of death.

Each society has committed barbarous acts in and out of war time.

The bombing of Dresden was horrific and pointless. But so was invading Poland.

The Allied commanders and politicians often reveal in their correspondence the heavy hearts they had when they ordered the bombing of civilian targets. But sometimes these deeds are necessary.

Let's remember the crew of the five Aircrafts that was shot down by the extremly strong Nazi AA during the attack.

Let's remember the countless civilians and Allied POWs who were EXTERMINATED by the Nazis, a wicked regime if ever there was one.

People dont start another war please biggrin.gif.

Good post scipio i've thought that one myself too. It was mindless slaughter of civilians and refugees. War was practically over. Only good explanation i can think is Western allies wanted to show Soviets their power..well i guess you know why. I consider it as startingpoint of cold war. When i was little i read a book where was picture of tens of dead children lying in schoolyard somewhere in Dresden all choked to dead(fires consumed all oxygen)..that was really shocking...war is horrible frown.gif

Most nations participating WW2 did horrible things. War is good vs. bad only in hollywood movies.

Should we post the "heroric" attrocities of the Germans as well Scipio?

I believe the end justified the means or am I wrong?

yes i think you are. frown.gif

I can't find killing justified by any means. You think you can make justice happen by killing more people? ...naive. Then youre just like ones you fight against.

70,000 less to support the German war effort. Sounds legit to me.
