Any tricks to getting guys to throw Handgrenades?

I believe they will throw grenades eventually if you target an area within 30 meters.

Yup, AI only, and targeting within a few action squares  will do the trick, eventually. Soft factors seem to play a role with regard to the amount of time it takes to have them actually toss the pineapples.

Play against me. Your pixeltruppen will toss grenades about like they're going out of fashion while my guys try too remember where they keep them.

Seriously, the AI has got it in for me with grenades. As soon as I get in grenade range all that happens is I get pasted with them. Defenders seem keener than attackers which actually seems a bit counterintuitive to me.

I also have a sneaking suspicion the Germans are keener to chuck them than most.

Besides soft factors, it depends on how many grenades the section/team, whatever, has.  I seem to get plastered about as often as I do the plastering. It does work a charm (usually) when close assaulting buildings.

Hand grenade range is three action spots (24 meters) and they can be thrown with or without a Target order.

To throw into a building the troop must be next to the building.

It is also possible to throw over a tall wall with no LOS to the other side of the wall. 

The more grenades a team has the more likely they are to use them. 

And dueling grenades just because.........

Yep, in CMSF both Combatants & Fighters have hand grenades.

Combined with a high Popuation Density setting and a lot of tall walls, this feature could make life hellish for Blue.....Now where do we know a map like that?

Nice. And if one of your guys pulls the pin and then gets shot guess what happens. Yep, he drops it and blows up his own guys. Man that is fun / heart breaking to watch - depending on which side it happens to.

River of Blood in FB provides a good opportunity. Go to a spot where you don't have a LOS for your firearms. Plot a LOF and it is grey and not red because the only weapons able to reach your target are your hand grenades.
