    It's not just a game for Battlefront, it's their work, it's normal that they defend it vigorously because they love what they do and so do I.
    I wish the Battlefront team a 🌲Happy New Year🌲 and lots of success for their future projects.

    Calm down, guys. BF is the best and already gave us so much. I believe they will continue to do so and we should be grateful and supportive.

    Well, that was a full day's work. Fortunately, the wife has been busy and hasn't minded me spending 6+ hours doing the artwork and the briefings for all the missions while listening to some early-70s Prog Rock albums and Thin Lizzy (Johnny the Fox is a seriously underappreciated album). All of the new work has just been imported into all the missions and their variants and all that's left to do is rewrite the campaign script and compile it.
    Now I COULD upload this later this evening and be able to say that I revised it in 2023 (just) but I'd like to spend a bit more time making sure that everything is as it says on the tin (I did a lot of that today but a second pass is always a good idea.) I like to make sure that all the AI plans are active (I switch them off while testing a new plan) and make sure that the variants have the proper changes implemented.
    I expect to have this done tomorrow morning which means it will still be up before the New Year if you live in Hawaii. Or failing that, early on Tuesday (for me)
    Edit to add:
    I just tested compiling the new version and it all works fine. Yay! There were a few errors but I found them all and corrected them. Now I just have to set those parameters in the script correctly and it's a day!

    Yes. Absolutely. The 'feedback' I got from watching that was incredibly helpful. I was actually embarrassed when he flunked the Scottish Corridor mission and went onto the Green path. That will definitely influence the remake. I want people to be able to win if they devise a good plan.
    I have a hope that one day he'll do The Khabour Trail, the Canadian campaign I made for the CMSF NATO module (the first one). That's the campaign I'm most proud of.
    I had a look at the revision that was made for CMSF2 and it looks almost identical with very little changed (probably because of the way I do the AI in my campaigns. It must have freaked them out when they realised they'd either have to do it all from scratch or try to fathom out how to update that so it still is pretty much my baby.

    Don't worry, this won't overwrite or otherwise delete the original campaign that came on the disk. IIt's a completely different file. This is substantially different from the vanilla campaign and the number of changes made is huge but the most important one to note is that you will need both the Market Garden module and the Vehicle Pack to play this.

    Other important highlights are that the 2/8 INF core units are now mostly Green with High morale which means you'll need to manage them more carefully in a firefight.
    All-new AI plans using triggers and most of the tricks that came with later versions of the game.
    Flamethrowers are included in some missions.
    Some maps have been revised, most notably the map for Turnbull's Stand which veterans of the original campaign will probably notice quite quickly.
    A 'new' mission has been added although those of you who found and played the earlier revised version that was uploaded to BFC's old Scenario Depot will recognise it. The campaign has a prelude phase consisting of the new mission and then the old campaign opener Beau Guillot. You should notice quite a few changes made to that mission as well - some extra help to make up for the drop in experience.
    There is air support in quite a few missions now and less artillery, at least the bigger guns anyway.

    Anyway, let's post this and then I'll see what needs to be 'fixed' or not in good time. This is an old campaign so i'm not expecting a ton of feedback for it for quite a while but let me know and I'll fix things. Now I'm taking a break from CMBN. I haven't quite decided what comes next - finishing Hasrabit or a new version of Gung Ho! for the German forces. Later, I'll get to work on the two Scottish campaigns I'd mentioned elswhere.

    Have a Happy New year.

    Imo there is a 'holy trinity' between quality, budget and time. You can't change one without impacting the others, so if one or two are fixed, the other need to be flexible. With BFC committing to quality (this is not necessarily mainly about bugs, but rather realism and authenticity of the game engine and depicted period/battles), them having a sort of fixed budget, the result is that time needs to be 'subject to change'. This is about the big picture, not individual releases/bugs or investing a couple of (10)thousand extra to get some things done outside the core team.

    Personally I'm also happy they sacrifice 'time' over quality. They could probably dumb down the game / new games and deliver faster. But that's not how they roll, in my experience since 2007. The result is that releases come when they are ready, it is what it is; still the lesser evil imo.

    In the short term (next year or two) mainly I'm waiting for the CMCW BAOR module, the CMFB module bringing it to the end of the war, and the CMBN Battle Pack adding Utah Beach and Carentan. In the medium term (next several years) I'm hoping to see a Cold War module adding West and East German forces, WW2 modules/base games moving the clock back to earlier in the war, and a CMBS module or new base game adding all the equipment necessary to recreate the actual fighting of the Russo-Ukraine war.
    I would love to see them go straight back to the beginning of the war, with Poland 1939 and France 1940, as well as Barbarossa. But they've explained multiple time why that's not practical (too much new equipment would have to be modeled all at once), so I'm anticipating a more incremental move back. Perhaps the next game can turn the clock back as far as Tunisia 1943 for the western front titles, while either a module to Red Thunder or a new eastern front base game might roll the clock as far back as Kursk 1943.
    And of course, while the CMFB module will bring all the fronts up to the end of the war, that's no reason the clock can't keep incrementally inching forward. One reason why it might be a good idea to include the Pershing in the CMFB module (keeping in mind the more features and units we demand the longer we should expect to wait), even though it barely saw any action, is that it might help pave the way for a base game set in Korea later down the line.
    Ultimately what I'm really waiting for is for realistic wargames to cover every front of every real and hypothetical war from the dawn of time to the distant future. But my expectations are somewhat more modest than my ambitions.

    I understand the impatience. I really do. We all want our new toys sooner rather than later.
    But my day job is testing software, and I've dabbled in a bit of programming in the past. So please trust me when I say it's not a good idea to rush these things. Some bugs are harder to squash than others. Some features are harder to work in than expected, and will frequently cause new bugs. It's always better to wait for a good product than to get a rushed piece of garbage. There is plenty of Combat Mission already out to keep us busy in the mean time.
    I believe everyone at Battlefront is probably working diligently. Battlefront releases have always been slow. In part I expect that's a result of the limited resources they've always had to work with, and in part that's just because properly developing and testing any product takes time. But the releases have always come. We will get our new toys when they're ready.

    The majority is based on Aris mods (I found a mod for the Nashorn in the mega mod "Berlin", but I don't know the author). The rest is based on the original textures from BF.c. Some snow textures and the King Tiger's snowy tracks have been added since the screenshot. I'll make some improvements before asking Bootie to host this folder.

    Yes, that's one way that you can trigger an order. But this only tells the unit to go now rather than go later. So execute when an enemy unit triggers the order or at T+20. Either way, it can only perform that order.
    Of course, that 'later' can be never which means if the trigger is not activated, it will stay in place. But the trigger can start a whole chain of orders which the player would otherwise not see.

    I had a day off yesterday, not surprisingly, watching a couple of movies with the wife to relax instead, but I did some work this afternoon. Neuville is now done and I'm currently working on 'Holding Action', a late chapter 3 mission. It's a small action on a small map so it didn't take long to get a working AI plan up and running. After finishing that, tomorrow I suppose, I'll tackle Le Ham and that will complete chapter 3 which leaves the final three missions to do.
    I'm not going to change very much with regards to the earlier chapter 3 missions as they are pretty substantial in size and the AI is fairly passive in them anyway so they should be fine. If I change nothing, it doesn't need further testing. 'Hell in the Hedgerows' has been 'improved' though as a loss here puts you on the historical path. Winning it has always meant an easier path to Le Ham so why not make it more historical. I've firmly placed my sadist hat on for this one change.
    The chapter 4 missions might take some time to do though  - Ecausseville was another historical 'knee to the groin' for the 2/8 INF so i'd like to use all the tools I have to make that one as challenging as possible too. The Farmhouse is very small, tiny in fact so I don't think that's much more than a day's work. The finale, Eroudeville, is going to take some time to do properly as it has a BIG German counterattack so I'm hoping to get this finished first week of 2024. I could just call it a day now but I want to really polish off those final missions as they'd all benefit from some attention.
    I jotted down some notes as well regarding the new structure and the VP awards earned by both sides in each mission so that the player can plan accordingly. I have also clarified the briefings so that the player understands beyond a shadow of a doubt that the friendly casualties BONUS is just that, a reward for an exceptional performance and not a punishment. I feel it is necessary to make that clear although some folks will always see it as a punishment.

    Right... Well, I promised I would try. Anyway, I've uploaded what I have so far:
    https://www.thefewgoodmen.com/tsd3/cm-cold-war/cm-cold-war-scenarios/cmcw-a-miserable-morning/
    It is really more of a map than a scenario, and the map lacks (proper placement of) flavour objects. There is an AI plan for the US but it is only partly working. No victoriy points, etc.
    Oh well, it is really only a preview. 😔
    For the general story look here:
    This scenario is right at the beginning of the campaign. A Soviet MRB is trying to keep momentum and break through NATO lines while on the other side a reinforced US platoon in a forward position tries to buy some time for the company to dig in and setup a defensive line and if possible to keep the road open a little longer for elements of the recon platoon to make it to safety.

    REVISED BRIEFING
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    1200, 10 July 1950. 500 yards east of Chonui, Korea. The sky is a haze with a light wind from
    the west. It is hot and the ground is very dry.
    ^
    The North Korean 4th Division (commanded by Major General Lee Kwon Mu) with Colonel Choe U
    Silk's 107th Tank Regiment was attacking south from Chonui. Earlier in the morning, the North
    Koreans mauled the U.S. Army's 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment. The battalion held for
    three hours against the North Korean onslaught. But two mistaken attacks, one from USAF F-80
    fighters and the other a bombardment from friendly 155mm artillery were too much for these
    green troops to endure. Soon, the battalion was running in headlong flight to the south despite
    the regimental commander, Colonel Richard W. Stephens' efforts to maintain order. Colonel
    Stephens ordered his 3rd Battalion to regain a low ridge east of Chonui.
    ^
    You are Lieutenant Colonel Jensen and command the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment. Your
    men are just off of the soft life doing occupation duty in Japan (The 24th Infantry Division).
    You have 2 understrength rifle companies supported by four M-24 Chaffee light tanks. Some of
    your men are seasoned WW2 veterans but most are the draftees of a nation convinced that all
    future conflict is most likely an atomic war. Ammunition levels reflect the sorry state of
    logistics during the first few weeks of the Korean War!
    ^
    Your enemy are believed to be elements of the North Korean 4th Division with T-34/85 tank
    support from the 107th Tank Regiment. They are dug-in on the ridge and have eyes on areas near
    [or in] your set up zone so deploy carefully!
    ^
    You have 45 minutes to accomplish your mission to attack the ridge and clear it of the enemy.
    Victory is settled by post-battle analysis by the human player. If you have cleared the North
    Koreans off of the ridge, you have won. Any that are still there might be cowered or broken and
    might not count.
    ^
    The 3rd Battalion commander, LTC Pryor, became a non-battle casualty and was unable to carry
    out the order. Colonel Stephens immediately replaced him with LTC Carl C. Jensen. At about
    1200, with the support of four M-24 Chaffee tanks, LTC Jensen launched his counterattack on the
    ridge. A firefight ensued with the defending North Korean infantry on the ridge. M-24 Chaffee
    tanks from the 24th Reconnaissance Company and Company A, 78th Heavy Tank Battalion engaged in
    the first tank-to-tank action of the war. One Chaffee tank achieved a "lucky hit" and killed a
    T-34/85. Two M-24s were knocked out in the process, while at least one M-24 (Rebel's Roost)
    survived the action. It was "no small achievement", but the 3rd battalion soon regained control
    of the ridge. Jensen's victory was short-lived. The next morning, the North Koreans executed a
    nearly perfect text book attack that regained the ridge, killing LTC Jensen in the process.
    (The designer notes contain additional info about this historical encounter...)
Tested in both "scenario author" and "iron" modes. Campaign compiles okay after discovering that one should not substitute the word 'and' with '&' in the syntax. The next and final phase begins tomorrow and will consist of evaluating if the Refit, Repair, Restore and Rest values strike an appropriate balance between the situation and game flow.
