  1. I'm still bewildered by that claim. Not only is it factually wrong -- the implication is invading countries on the pretext of "stopping" a decentralized organization of a small number of bad actors is okay. I do not see how it makes a difference if they invaded to "stop terrorists" or to prop up a client regime. It doesn't prove his point. I think the guy is saying this out of ignorance, rather than trying to re-write history. Which is sad, because the US (and the rest of us NATO folk) could have learned from what happened in the 80s. I'm not entirely sure who this Jim Crow dude is, but I get it -- civil wars are touchy subjects. But yeah, there's a difference between moving a statue and destroying it. You can put a statue in a museum, so people can see it in a historical context. I'm just not a fan of statues being defaced, smashed or blown up. Artists worked on that, regardless of who it shows. We had a situation in my city, where they removed a cigar from a Churchill statue -- 'cause it encouraged smoking, apperantly. That's just plain wrong! Churchill would send those sensationalists to Gallipoli, he would!
  2. It's easy to tear something down -- it's building something better that's tough. This dude wasn't a nice guy. Would humanity benefit from all the artwork made of him destroyed?
  3. I've been holding on for this dank meme for some time: That's how mafia works. Old Joe was an outlaw that generated a lot of revenue for the Bolsheviks by robbing banks and pulling off train heists. Not a good military commander, though. He failed to link up with Tukhachevsky during the Battle of Warsaw (the prequel) and was blamed for their defeat in Poland. Funny enough, both Tukhavhevsky and Trotsky, the people in charge of that campaign, ended up dead prior to WW2. These purges came from intel provided by German agents... it was quite a shock for him when Barbarossa happened. Virtually all Soviet officers were WW1 vets, and a lot of them came from Brusilov's camp. They're the ones behind Red Army's successes in the war, and if it wasn't for the purges -- there would be more of them around. It's kinda funny how Stalin got this image of Communist Generalissimos, while he was just a thief and with a military bad-call streak as bad as than Conrad Von Hotzendorf. In the upcoming RT module, we'll see him try to meddle in military matters again. He could manipulate people and managed to sic a few WW1 vets, namely Vasilevsky and Zhukov, to compete for Berlin. They had the situation in the bag, and rushed when they didn't have to. The result was Seelow Heights, losing forces that would be critical to partitioning Germany.
  4. Yeah, I assumed that band was your namesake. xD Always keeping an ear out for new music, friend. I'd very welcome more synthwave, I was pretty obsessed with it in 2017. Introducing the new subgenre: Nonu Metal Here is one of the first bands I got into. Especially appropriate for modern CMs:
  5. That is an insane WW1 photo. Those are Russians, for sure -- the medal looks like some variant of the St. George's Cross. Lever actions? Not surprised, rifle shortages were fairly widespread.
  6. DCS took the first slot on my list of worst offenders. xD Yeah, completely agreed.
  7. Very enlightening thread. Those statistics are grim. Talking about combat fatigue was discouraged, for the sake of both military and civilian morale. Even then, it's not really a pleasant topic for those who were at the front, and they preferred not to talk about it. My great grandfathers, generally, spoke very little of WW2. One of them served as an infantry officer from '39 to V-J day. Lots of various awards and medals, but very few war stories.
  8. Dude, you have to. They put on a crazy show. They did their Nostradamus album at the time, and I have to say it sounded better live. Obviously you can't beat Painkiller or Breaking da Law live! It's hard to believe that a music prodigy can be so humble and kind, these days. You're not the first person I've heard say this, either. I actually think Bush is a decent vocalist. He's just not the Anthrax vocalist. Armored Saint is pretty good. Yeah, a shame. It was the original line-up too. The Cars? Like Moving in Stereo Cars? Yeah, they're the more mature ones of the bunch. RIP Jeff, too. He was only 49 when he passed -- too soon. Avid military history enthusiast to boot. Yeah, those were the bands that were popular when I was growing up. Crack the Skye is a sweet album. Not a huge fan of Killswitch -- though I did like their Holy Diver cover. Oh, I listen to a crazy amount of hardcore and punk (Dead Kennedys, Exploited, Discharge, Black Flag, NoFX, Bad Religion, Clash, Minor Threat...). Lots of ska/punk as well, Talco being a personal favourite. But I dare not post punk/hardcore/ska in a metal thread -- I value my limbs intact. Master of Puppies is absolutely superb. Cliff Burton RIP -- another legend gone before his time. He was Metallica for me. Not a huge fan of their records post Burton. Applicable to pretty much any CM game. Yeah, I listen to a lot of synthwave (it's made a come back). Gary Numan, Human League, B52s and Kraftwerk are all on flash memory in my car. Gary Numan's another remarkable dude. Guy flies WW2 planes and still puts out records. VERY good records, I must say. I was thinking of starting a Calling All Rivet Heads thread. My CM soundtrack is mostly Industrial (old & new) and EBM.
  9. They're still in service in the US and around the world (even in Russia and China). It shoots out pellets in a cone, so it has to face the enemy. Not sure how that'd work with the CM IED mechanic. It'd be cool if we could booby-trap buildings, and give sappers an ability to clear them.
  10. This is the first time I've heard of this. All the youtubers I've seen play these games are quite impressed. I'm a stingy dude, and can am easily turned off by crazy pay models (I'm looking at you, Ubisoft). In the simulation market, paid updates are a thing. BFC's stuff is fairly affordable compared to DCS (which has different content for different versions) or Steel Beasts (a USB stick!). IL-2 charges insane amount for planes and expansions -- even on sale!
  11. That happened to me, glad I was playing as the Soviets. I think there's also an RL trend in NATO, especially here in Canada, with SPAAGs fading out of service. The Soviets in Afghan removed radar from their Shilkas and replaced it with ammo. Why? Only use it had was engaging infantry at high elevations. Honestly, that's the only use I can see for SPAAGs in SF2. I wouldn't mind them for wrecking buildings, but I've yet to encounter SAA CAS of any consequence.
  12. Yeah, most Sabbath cover band frontmen make themselves look like Ozzy from that era. This guy didn't, which made me confused -- at first. Once I heard the sound coming out of him, I realized he didn't need to dress up. I feel you in regards to that style of vocals. It was an acquired taste for me. I used to be turned off by it, but I got used to it. Some are better than others, and I think Bolt Thrower is one of the better ones. This being said, I prefer clean vocals -- virtually every time. The only thing I remember about Spiral Architect is they sound like Cynic xD. Check this: my first concert was Judas Priest, Motorhead, Heaven & Hell and Testament. The punch line is that I was mostly interested in Testament, back then (was 13 and my Dad took me to the concert xD). You can only imagine how much my expectations were exceeded, and what sort of impression that left. I'm so glad I got to see Dio and Lemmy before their deaths (RIP). I saw Megadeth, Metallica and Slayer together -- and guess who took Anthrax's deserved place? Testament. Big fan of Anthrax, but Belladonna wasn't there at the time -- and non-Joey Anthrax is a travesty to me. I missed a Sabbath concert 'cause I was in Uni and was more poor than a homeless person. I should have sold a kidney, in retrospect. Never saw Maiden either, which will change this year. I feel like Kerry F-ing King just acts like a dick 'cause that's his image. I'm from North Montana, AKA the Dominion of Canada. Here's one to start the endless moshpit that are genre arguments:
  13. Yeah, I visited the Warp Lane museum when I was a kid and absolutely loved it. Made the Avro Arrow my favourite plane. I've been to Camp Borden multiple times, and every year their collection got better. Lots of very rare hardware there. Including an old Churchill Mk. 1 (which my mum mistook for a WW1 tank, as did the Germans during Dieppe), a Grizzly, a Ram, a Wirbelwind -- even a WHIPPET! Oh, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. They even got a Pak 36(r), which puzzled me as a kid. It didn't really have the look of a German Pak, turns out its a converted Soviet F-22 that found its way to the Western Front and then here. Haven't been to those museums in Ottawa. Maybe the reason I always find Ottawa so dreadfully dull is because I go to all the wrong places.
  14. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-01-08/man-injures-20-children-iin-chinese-primary-school-attack/10700442 I'm not easily shocked, but this is crazy.
  15. I remember I had horrid experiences with snipers in CMSF 1. In the British campaign, I had a sniper team constantly fail to kill a technical that was stationary 300 meters below them. They'd just fail to hit the guys sitting inside. They just kept on hitting the roof or the side of the Toyota.
  16. CM: Red Thunder reminded me of this: Cubanate's Barbarossa will have to wait until we get early war. xD
  17. I think if people start posting all the Sabbath derivatives, we'd exhaust the thread -- and then maybe the forum. That Sabbath cover band shocked me -- frontman sounds exactly like Ozzy. I'd say Bolt Thrower's first album is probably their weakest, very rough demo. They got better and better as time went on. For Victory and IVth Crusade are probably my favourite ones -- but I'd recommend Mercenary and Those Once Loyal just as easily. I'll admit, I first heard of them when I saw the Realms of Chaos album cover. It was love at first sight. Also... I haven't heard of Stratovarius in a while. Bumped into one of their records by chance, I really don't mind a more melodic Cynic. Another cheap shot, the prequel to CM: Black Sea:
  18. Not a fan of nu-metal here, either -- with the exception of SoaD. I'm surprised the whole discography of Sabaton isn't on here yet. I've seen quite a few people chanting their lyrics on these forums. Speaking of insane Sabbath cover bands: Hate to break the one song per post and traditional rule -- but I gotta insert one of my favourite bands in here:
  19. I was very surprised when I read that in the news. I've never heard anyone justify the Soviet intervention as a reprisal against terrorism, or pan the result of it on "tough fighting". All Soviet expatriates, that I've talked to, tend to be very cynical about Afghanistan. At the time, it was a very unpopular war, and Soviet media did their best to hide it. The Brezhnev government was initially against it, and rejected 2 appeals by the socialist Afghani government. Andropov was against it from the very beginning. I remember a documentary referred to it as the "Forgotten War", because it was repressed from Russian history. President Trump isn't attempting to re-write history -- he just doesn't like to proof-read. He should consider hiring an editor to spare him the embarrassment. This being said, I'm quite alarmed by recent historical revisionism, as well. Both the Third Reich and Imperial Japan are having their records expunged. In Japan, it is especially worrying, considering the people behind Unit 731 were never brought to justice and the genocide that happened in China is not widely known. Recently, Putin government turned Nicholas II The Bloody into Saint Nicholas II. That's right, they canonized him. They canonized a man who caused WW1, pogroms, slaughters of protesters, and a revolution the world is still reeling from. I've even heard that to openly criticize the last tzar is seen as a religious infraction -- rather than common sense. It's a mad, mad, world.
  20. Aye, that it was. Same goes for D-day. If Ike rushed, it could have ended like Dieppe. Monty rushed, and he got Operation Market Garden. The Soviets didn't rush (pun resist check succeeded) Bagration, and that worked. Lots of costly missteps in Berlin, though. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. One of the reasons Patton didn't get a fifth star.
  21. I live like an hour away, and I've only just recently heard about this. You can ride in an M113 for 50 bucks? Tempting...
  22. Have you checked the inventories of your vehicles? I'm guess the Fuchs carries MILANs. It's an ATGM that'll smite those rusty tin cans. Get a squad to AQUIRE a launcher and some missiles, you can reliably bin them from any range.
  23. Can only hope they'll bring back CMA eventually. Thanks for compiling all your experiments!
