Obviously there's a lot of focus on the positives of drones, but how often do we think about how much they can encourage higher commanders to micromanage?

IIRC: A change of Premier. Chernenko died. Gorbachev got in. Gorby wasn't keen on the war.

There were social and economic factors, like @A Canadian Cat mentions, but in a state where the repression dial goes up to 11 it's hard to see how they could be decisive.
That certainly seems to be what we're seeing today: Putin doesn't seem to care about casualties, economic damage or the potential for social unrest. Russia will pull out of Ukraine when whoever's in the Kremlin decides to and it's really not clear how Ukraine and the West can exert pressure to force that decision.

I heard from American acquintances who'd served in Afghanistan at least ten years ago about multiple instances of senior NCOs who effectively hijacked mast/balloon mounted surveillance cameras to spy on their own patrols to ensure that no one was violating petty uniform regulations.
"Tell Private So-and-so to get his eye pro back on. And by God Sergeant, roll down your sleeves again!"

So that was UKR drone w overlaid RU radio intercept?  Fascinating, thx for sharing Hapless (oh, and thanks for all the youtube vids while I am at it).  So the commander is micromanaging all the way down to "tell them to fire at the ATGMS" as if they couldn't figure that out?  He sounded more like an obnoxious fan at a sporting event than a commander of anything.  Then, as punch line for all of, there's huge bavovna as they are ordered to drive over the mines.  Made my day.
Edit: or was than an ATGM hit that caused the explosion?

Well, looking at a slightly more zoomed out map, right now at least they're apparently on the wrong side of the river for Kharkiv. Doesn't exactly look like that axis is a defensive priority.
