As witty and amusing as this thread has become, and though I doubt I will ever tire of seeing Childress's effeminate avatar, I would cast my vote for some sort of melee combat simulation in Combat Mission, even it it is via casualties only...no animations needed. Some things CM1 did better.

Well the original post does have a point, though it's certainly not limited to this game or just guide missiles.  Battlefields tend to be bigger in real life then in PC games for both techinical and flow reasons.  Armor and Mechanized forces can cover 4km in a very short period of time.  Line of sight can be much, much further.  Ukraine is a big place, some of it can is forested, some of it you can see for miles.  For proper scale you might need 40 square Km.  Frankly that would be kind of boring. 20 mintues of driving through farm land punctuatied by a guy launching a Sagger into an unoffending barn.  Combat Mission is still a game, and realism takes a back seat at certain points.  When you start a mission, you know you'll face some stiff resistance.  In real life, you have no idea what you'll face.  Often it'll be light resistance or none at all.  You might fight an small urban battle in Combat Mission shock force and go for 45 minutes of game time and win a decisive victory over the insurgents.  In Iraq, you might be get in a six hour gun fight and never know if you actually inflicted any causalties on the enemy or how many there were, or even who they were and what their problem was.  That doesn't make for a good game experience (or any kind of good experience!).  There will always be a conflict between simulation, game, and what can realistically be produced on a computer.  I'm not saying tha Battlefront is beyond critisism on any of these factors, but you should take these factors into consideration.

wish folks could wait till it was out before pronouncing judgements, but I guess it is Bil and Scott's fault as we are simply filling in time waiting for the next installment...

So here is how it really works.  You have two tanks about 1km distant.  Tank A spots Tank B.  Tank B's laser detector goes off and it automatically fires smoke.  If Tank A has already fired that doesn't do much good other than protecting it from additional shots.

So what it really comes down to is how fast can a tank fire off an accurate round after lasing.  The Abrams is faster.  That means you may have a lot of instances of getting an opportunity of that flank shot only to see the Abrams defensive measures allow it to escape. For the T 90, odds are that first round is on it's way before it can pop smoke.  Obviously you may be able to affect that by crew experience settings.

You will have a lot of instances in CMBS where your tank pops smoke and backs up and you'll be scratching your head as to what lased it.  Get used to that.  In a large tank engagement you are gonna see a LOT of smoke.

CMBS is a whole lot different than I think anyone realizes.  These boards are gonna be fun once it is released.

Maybe we should try ask 'gently' a question to Steve that is not double-barrelled .

    Hence,

Dear Steve, if you are still in a good and giving mood as you were during XMAS - will you tell us whether

    1) there will be tank riders in 'CM-BotB/Ardenne' ?

    and

    2) Is there love/goodies coming our way for CMFI+GL ?

and whilst we are at it.... how about

    3) CMRT. Any hints yet ? Let's assume you can give us a closing remark for Year 2014 ! Which i think... was a Good-Year for Battlefront in general.

I can't answer for Battlefront but here's my tuppence worth...

    1. Repairs to immobilised vehicles are not within the time frame of CM battles.
    2. This has been batted to and fro in previous threads and can't really be replicated within CM.
    3. Simple answer is "No".

And .. any pdf/readme will accompany the file ?
    Thanks kohlenklau.

CMFI+GL is a nice game - i think it has different flavours to offer than the French lands or Russian Soil. And closer to my home country

Which city is this campaign going to be set?

Good. I already evaded paying a fine for wrong parking today. It is a lucky day.

About the Peng thread. Never had the patience to read it. Not many things there make much sense but maybe that is a point there? BTW, why is it called "Peng"?

Lets show some love to the Commonwealth forces, eh? This scenario comes with LOADS of info: August 1944. Following the establishment of the bridgehead across the Seine at Vernon, 43rd Wessex Infantry Division established feelers into the countryside. Every UK Infantry Division in France had a Recce Rgt. This battalion was equipped with Armored Cars (Daimlers, Humbers and Staghounds) and was fully mechanized in carriers. The men felt like and were an elite. They were the eyes and ears of their division, and many a town and city in Northern France and Belgium was liberated by them in the heady days of pursuit in late summer 1944. At first, during the advance to the Seine, a deadly protocol was followed. Some villages were empty of the Germans, and the French civilians would stream out to greet their liberators with Cider and Calvados. Then in the next village or copse, an AT gun would wait and the first indication of its presence would be when the leading car brewed up. Being the driver of a Humber was a deadly job in a Recce Rgt. The German rear-guards left behind fought a desperate fight against their pursuers, trying to hold them off, to allow more of their comrades to make it behind the next river line, where they hoped to turn around and face the Allies. Harassed from the air, and time and again hit by the over-whelming firepower resting in spear-heads of the Allied forces, they would still not give up without a fight. 5th Glosters had been unluc...

LOL, for those who don't know "yours to discover" used to be the slogan in our Ontario license plates.

It got kind of awkward once personalized plates came along.
