Not something I have seen before, but I’m sure it’s a newer innovation to maintain pressure on a head wound. One of the reasons for the U.S. Military hair regulations is because you can bleed to death very quickly from a head wound if there is a lot of hair between the wound and the direct pressure dressing.

From my point of view, the C.O.’s punishment probably wasn’t so much because they used so many rounds than the fact they disobeyed orders and violated what we would call “fire discipline.” I remember one time when a member of a sister Squadron who was on a deployment to an Air Force base got caught spray painting his Squadron insignia on the Air Force fighters. The result of his “Non-judicial (Office Hoursj assessment was a punishment of a $50.00 fine, to be paid at the rate of $1.or per month, not because of what he did, but for getting caught!

Looks to me like a fan or turbine came apart, or, it could have been a natural even such as a large bird strike. This is the time of year when geese, ducks, and others begin migrating to nesting sites in the Arctic. We’ll probably never know.

There are many theories as to why this type of behavior exists. The human psychology at this point in time is probably well beyond what we (Scientists, Anthropologists,Psychologists, etc) are capable of understanding at this point in time. The switch from “war game” to “war” can be almost instantaneous. There are many documented examples of men, and women, involved in an organized and planned military war game has suddenly devolved into an actual battle with entrenching tools, bayonets, combat knives, rocks, helmets, etc. I saw it in a NATO operation in Norway when Norwegian Infantry asked us if we had bayonets. We said no, and asked why they wanted to know. They told us that an SAS unit (aggressors) they had attacked the previous night, had fixed bayonets and stuck a couple of their unit.
When I was in a militia Minuteman group re-enacting pre and eventual colonial battles in the U.S. Bicentennial in 1974 and 1975, ram rods were required to be wired into the ram rod slot of all muskets and pistols because of the frequency of the ram rods flying down range at “the enemy, and no one was allowed to carry a bayonet or knife. There is something about our psyche that puts those turns of events on a hair-trigger.

0thers have said it pretty good about the Marshall Study, 0n Combat, and 0n Killing. It has been awhile since I have read them, but the other caveat that Marshall and Grossman had was that it depended on the unit as well. Airborne, Marines, Rangers, etc were pretty much inversely proportional in their participation. Those that joined these "elite" formations were ones that wanted to fight, were aggressive by nature, and generally received a much higher level and intensity of training. Experience also calculates in (in December of 44 the Big Red 0ne was a different animal than a division fresh off the boat).
So overall, there are a plethora of variables that can and do affect the percentage of participation in combat. There is no set rule or formula that can be applied across the board. Kudos to Marshall and others for their work, but when boiled down it becomes an anecdote or rule of thumb that will probably be wrong more times than it will be right.
These are just my opinions with no scientific backing, but I believe the main factors for how a small unit performs in combat are Motivation/Morale, Training/Experience, and leadership. I agree that the UA in general shows a high level of motivation, especially in units like the one in the video (Da Vinci's Wolves). Throw all the atrocities and war crimes on top of the basic motivation to defend their country and people and it is pretty easy to see higher levels for the UA. The leadership from that NC0 made a world of difference as well. Take him out of the scenario and it could have easily went the other way. At the same time a senior NC0 or officer needs to have a conversation with him that he'll never forget about how the Russians were able to approach to grenade range in daylight on a flat open field without being seen and engaged.
The Training/Experience factor is something that I have payed a lot of attention to over the course of this war. There has been a pretty steady rise in the professionalism of a lot of the UA units over the last year. While watching bunches of videos I found myself cringing a lot due to the lack of muzzle discipline, spray and pray marksmanship, and poorly sited and prepared fighting positions. For example I don't know how many times I've subconsciously panicked  when seeing a soldier sitting or standing with their muzzle in the dirt or mud. My pulse starts to quicken and all I can think of is that the UA version of Gunny Mendoza is going to come around the corner, see that, and promptly make a popsicle out of that soldier with his rifle as the stick.
There does seem to be a trend though of seeing less and less of that untrained/undisciplined behavior. I have high hopes for this summer and believe the UA will impress us by seriously out-classing the RA when they kick off their offensive.

I’m not sure about this. The Government and the military have a history of going for the absolute maximum penalties in order to dissuade idiots from repeating this type of breach.
I agree with you about the “good Christian” analysis. All you have to do is look at the sexual abuse by Clergy revelations and convictions.

I don’t know when the security changes began evolving, but “when I was in,” access to ANY classified documents from Confidential to Top Secret and higher, was on a “need to know basis only.” Even the maintenance manuals were classified Confidential. Even at the Federal Agency at which I worked writing Regulations and Policies required a Confidential Clearance at the very least. When did that change to allowing even low-level IT people to access. At the very least, He should have been restricted to only documents for the computer systems.
A secutity failure at this level of this magnitude are NEVER just a single-point failure. Unfortunately, many times the failures are swept under the rug to keep those in the “good old boy network”from being punished.

Another longer interview with the General from 1979. Interesting for those who have not seen this:

Positioning “a Division” of Marines in Taiwan (which was Formosa to me while I was gtowing up), is pretty much already done, and China knows it. The 1st Marine Division and the 1st Marine Air Wing are already stationed in Japan, Okinawa, and other scattered areas around there. You can be very sure that China hasn’t missed or forgotten how quickly the  Marines were able to deploy to S.Korea (albeit it a lot closer) when N. Korea invaded S. Korea. The USMC can deploy a Rapid Deployment Force (such as the 4th Marine Brigade) anywhere in the world within a maximum of 72-hours. Why do you think the Commandant of the Marine Corps has already revised Marine strategy by getting rid of its tanks and long-range arty in order to fight in the South China Sea? I’ll guarantee you that China hasn’t missed it.

I watched a “Master Course” one time on the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. The Presenter said that the Framers of the Constitution envisioned the U.S. as a Republic, and would be horrified to see it now as a two-party Democracy. He said tha one off the signers actually said “I am an Aristocrat! I love Liberty, but I hate equality!”
We began as a Republic and evolved (or devolved) into a Demoncracy. Perhaps why our two major parties are Republicans and Democrats.

Benjamin Franklin once said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
It is also a good thing that most western nations are not true democracies. They are republics that guarantee the rights of their citizens.
"A democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what's for dinner. Liberty is a well armed lamb contesting the vote."

LOL! We had the same basic expression in the USMC, except that we said a monkey. We had a stencil in the Squadron metal shop that would be used to paint in numerous places on any USN, USAF, or rival USMC Squadron F4 that was unfortunate enough to be in our squadron area long enough for us to make an assault. Thank you got that. It brings back good memories from 50 plus years ago.

When we took my Mother-in law to Ireland (her parents were both Irish immigrants in the 19th century), we visited the Castle. Our 6-year old son wanted to kiss the Blarney Stone, so we let him even though I had my doubts. I took one look at the stone and the fact that it was in a bump-out in the wall with its opening directly over where the moat would have been. That screamed “privy” or “loo” to me, and I decided that the Irish were saying “There’s our revenge on the English!”
