  1. I am liking it a lot more than I thought I would. But my main concern stills stand - First class armies against third or fourth class armies can lead to some very lopsided fights. Yeah, I can understand that. At this point I still rank CMBS above CMSF2 just because you can get a better fight out of a battle between a couple of first class armies.
  2. Yeah even then that map was 2km by 2km - which back then was big. That was Engine v1. Now we can have even bigger maps and that defiantly pushes the limits of the game engine - @c3k and I hit them - cannot remember the size of that map but we had a lot of forces. I have a "Huge" QB going now but that is only a 2.5km by 1.5km map. I also have a game of korsun2017 on the go - that is pretty big. A mechanized battalion + attacking on a 3.6km by 3.6km map. As amazing as that 20 000 point battle was Engine 4 can handle bigger (and so can my new PC). Don't for get that part. My original PC was struggling at times with frame rates in the teens on that 2x2 map. My new PC is doing better than that 3.6x3.6 map.
  3. But your 4.0 upgrade allows you to download the full installers. I would go that route. Download the full CMFI 4.0 install and install that. Then activate your original key and the upgrade key and then any module keys you have. Do no bother trying to install an original version and patch and update it in the correct order. Just don't
  4. Sorry to be a web blanket (keeping the puns started by @c3k going) but I'm lost. All the responses seem to imply that @sonar has found away to have water at two elevations on the same map? I must be blind or something cause I do not see that in his pictures. Can someone help me out and post a clear example or use arrows or something on the existing pictures showing the multi level water? The way it works (or so I thought) is that water tiles all go to the same level - the lowest level that contains a water tile on the map. Which means you can create a hilly environment and place a lake at 65m no problem as long as the only water tiles are at that 65m elevation.
  5. LOL although I'm not sure if a smart aleck remark would be the best choice in this situation. Yeah that level of war crime (cause that's what it would be) if used routinely would have been all over the documentation of the war.
  6. LOL that is one awesome picture. It is way better that this: https://goo.gl/images/NpFrbk
  7. Ouch - are you trying to hurt our brains? 100m squares for a game that uses 8m action squares. Let's see that's 12.5 squares per side of the grid, that's 156.25 AS per grid square. I am only kidding we all know what you are trying to do - help orient us on a big map. And really no one should spend time thinking about action squares unless you get into the weeds over some game behaviour or corner case. I will try to forgive you for that
  8. Nice to see the detail on what your battle looks like. Sounds interesting... Especially the surprise element. Cool.
  9. I usually remember to rename the highest ranking HQ with my name during Quick Battle force selection. Does that count as role playing?
  10. Yesterday I added a couple of links that should really have been there the whole time. How did I miss the topic of mods? Oh and the latest bones threads.
  11. Nice explanation. I added to my FAQ post: Anyone who revisits might think a lot has changed but I just added a section on mods and reorganized things slightly.
  12. For what? This forum? Never seen anything like that. The main web site? I have not seen that either but i also have not visited in a few days.
  13. 2v2 Game sizes vary from 12.6Mb to 20Mb bouncing around between 14 and 16 most of the time A Temple to Mars: sizes increase from 12Mb to 22Mb and then drop back to 16Mb Korson: sizes start at 54Mb and jump to 72Mb and then back into the 60 range and then back up to 80Mb where they stay for a while - that game is still going. A large QB I am playing now: sizes shoot up from 18 to 30 very quickly and then slowly drop back down to 21 where it has bounced around for a long time now. Swords and Villers Bocage: Started off around 19-21Mb slowly difted up to 24Mb and then back down to around 20Mb Wax Museum: Started off at 29Mb and quickly rose to 43Mb and has moved up steadly to 76Mb then drifted down to 70Mb and the lately shot up 80 then 90 and then stabilized at around 105Mb and then just in the last few turns shot up again to 138Mb. So, that's a fair mount of variability.
  14. I am sure I see some variation in size as the game progresses. But I happen to have hundreds of turn files archived on a back up drive. When I get home tonight I can actually have a look at the files sizes and comment...
  15. Are you referring to standing in the back of the truck and fighting spotted enemy units? Or the crazy stance they are taking on the edge of the side wall of the truck Yes, troops can fight from in side open carriers or when riding on tanks. My favourite for this is WW2 Bren carriers - small teams, cool stances, less loss when things go sideways
  16. LOL - OK so you don't want to hear one of my many iTunes on Windows stories then
  17. ?? how would stopping work on content and instead putting in work to change the publishing mechanism, the DRM and the patching mechanism plus whatever else Valve wants done be beneficial? Yes, I know people will trot out the usual steam installs are better, steam patches are better steam DRM is better. Ah BS! It's not that much better and the cost is very large - in terms of no content for us. You are kidding your selves if you think there are no people with problems with steam installs, patches or DRM. Every install or DRM hiccup is fixable via support - all we have to be is a bit patient and follow the instructions to get ourselves fixed up. I am sure you can objectively make the case that it is better than what BFC are currently using but better enough that you would like to spend a year waiting for new content? No thanks. Don't get me wrong if they were on Steam I'd happily buy them and be happy with whatever improvement that offered. But delaying new content - colour me not interested.
  18. LOL he has *always* said that. Yes, he sometimes get annoyed at the griping and makes a emphatic statement but every time he has chimed in here to explain it (see the links I already posted) that is what he says.
  19. .kmz is on the list of files that google earth can open. Could it be a GPS mapping of the battle fields. https://www.google.com/earth/outreach/learn/packaging-content-in-a-kmz-file/
  20. Possibly or he just got played. That statement would have been a good starting point coming out of a meeting of the Secretary of State and the Foreign Minister. You know a framework for discussions between lower level officials working towards a leaders summit in a year or two or three once there was an actionable deal in place. I think the veteran NK watcher I heard interviewed this morning summed it up (sorry I cannot remember his name - or was it a she cause there were a few good points from a number of people on CBC this morning) by saying: Kim just said the same vague things that previous NK leaders have agreed to six or eight times over the decades and they never followed through on any of it and Kim got a massive boost of recognition and likely if not an official reduction in sanctions (none were on the table) but an opportunity to work the back door with China and perhaps SK now that the "maximum pressure" talk is done. And he got a suspension of military exercises. In other words Kim got what he wanted, recognition, a relaxing of the sanctions - at least practically, a shift in the alliance and more time. All Trump got was a photo op. I don't think that even Sanders and Conway can spin this as a better deal than the one he ripped up with Iran. I'm sure they will try but how could that hold any water at all.
  21. I don't know either but I would guess no number would be high enough. The amount of work to retrofit the Steam code requirements is non trivial. We all saw the angst that going quite with info and no content released caused. Can you imagine what it would be like to go that long or longer for just Steam and no new content at all? Just adding more users in the pile doesn't really help much. Kinda like if I went to a busy street downtown and stopped everyone I could to talk up Combat Mission I highly doubt it would make much difference if I engaged 1000 people or a million people. Yes, I know the downtown street corner of random people are not gamers but honestly my gamer friends are not the least bit interested in CM either. I am constantly pitching and demoing the game - not a single bite from one of them. True I'm still a ways off 1000 but still
