  1. well when he looked at the UI, it didn't say he couldn't take out the Sherman. I'm kidding guys, just kidding!!!
  2. c'mon guys. no name calling, no flip responses or heated disagreements. How the heck are we gonna pass a week with this kind of gentlemanly limp reaction? regarding responses, I didn't say necessarily the best men just that their unit strength was generally kept up with healthy replacements. The fact that they also looked to the occupied countries for troops for sure would introduce a level of inconsistency as well though - good point. Wait I mean "what the heck. Are you kidding me, who cares what language the tall blonde guy speaks, he's still tall and blonde!!". As to equipment, I believe only a handful of divisions in the Wehrmacht got anywhere near the front of the line for equipment replacements like the SS. Probably better to look at the eastern front as all the panzer units on the Western front were gutted in Normandy and rebuilt for Wacht am Rhein. Overall I think the western front would not have the same level of disparity as the eastern front.
  3. Seeing as we have at least a week to kill and we already beat to death the subject of allies versus axis capability - time to take on those wunderkind. Were they really such a big deal or did preferential access to men and material simply waste resources for the Wehrmacht? Personally I think their elite status is much overblown, yes they were fanatical and yeah they had the best toys of the lot (Aside from GrossDeutschland and a few others) and better access to replacements, but given all the resources thrown their way, my personal (usually flawed) opinion is Germany got less out of the bargain than if they had incorporated those resources into the Wehrmacht. Okay flame away.
  4. I don't envy the guy in Indonesia. Company I work for has an office in Jakarta and getting them set up with VoIP had been a challenge. Staying there wasn't so fun either. Mirror checks under the car each night coming back to the hotel etc.
  5. Not sure I would rate the SS better than the FJ. In terms of the SS, rating them as Elite is an assumption that I don't think necessarily holds across the boards so much as Fanaticsm. The difference I see between the two being not all SS units necessarily fought tactically well, but would be willing to accept higher casualties. I believe that was one of the major criticisms of the Waffen SS by the Wehrmacht. Not having tried the game yet we will see how the various factors work together. From the US perspective, the 2nd Panzer was rated as one of the toughest divisions they faced IIRC from some material I was reading from the Bulge combat.
  6. LOL I don't think it's that. It is simply that we are only 6 days into May. It really is too early to be upset at BFC when they are still within the time frames they have stated.
  7. That would work once and then they would pay for it in every release afterwards. LOL
  8. I think we are all getting a bit too crazy parsing every statement or thought they utter looking for a release date. The demo statement was not directly theirs though they didn't contradict it. The MAC OS announcement referenced a possible timeline of up to May 11th. The then and now video also says May 2011. They never said that it would BE end of April, they said around and that was a bit ago and it is after all only May 6th. The more we bug them for updates, the less time they are spending wrapping it up. So let's all give them another week and then ask if they have an update as opposed to asking for an update of the already stated update. Yeah I am as antsy as anyone else and pre ordered I think the day pre order was announced. However they have actually been pretty good at trying to keep us posted within reason. Hell you should see the kind of announcements I get for feature capability from my VoIP vendor and they have loads more money and engineers than BFC. Then again I don't really care some much about VoIP features.
  9. Probably, but it beats pressing F5. Distributes the wear and tear on my fingers.
  10. Don't thank me yet, the release date is now "4/1 to 9/8". Makes our wait for CMBN look like a cake walk. (not to be confused with a training scenario).
  11. Actually I disagree, poor maps, which I saw plenty of, made the QB option something I didn't really find useful. Having a quick battle option with good maps is more than just an improvement to me, it actually makes it something I will consider using. If I had to chose between any other feature and having auto generated versus hundreds of premade maps for me it is an easy decision. I am not sure I really understand the fixation for auto generated versus pre generated maps. No offense but it almost sounds like semantics. CMx1 without quick battles wouldn't have changed my opinion of the product as I felt that QB maps (no offense intended BFC) pretty much sucked. As to time savings, you don't have to search for other maps, you can simply accept the first one it gives you. However if for example you wanted a hedgerow infantry fight you can opt for a different map than the first. For me it is a win win all the way around. I can't say there are plenty of me unless someone wants to start a survey, but I haven't seen anything in the argument for auto generated maps that the new model can't accommodate and do better than CM1 did. Sorry don't mean to be dense if I am missing the point, but what do you see as the significant difference that an auto generated map has over a premade auto selected map keeping in mind that A)the premade maps are of superior quality and you have the option if you so choose of picking a different map if the first doesn't match the type of battle you want?
  12. You've been checking out my panties again? Am I gonna have to get another restraining order? I think maybe we are looking for 2 different things here. As had been noted in a couple posts, effective range, max range and range under current conditions are all likely to be different. If you review the manual they do have effective ranges listed which will give you a ballpark on what is probably the max range you are gonna considering using. Cover, concealment, weather effects etc will all reduce that. I actually never really looked up and honestly couldn't tell you the effective ranges of weapons in CMSF, but in the process of playing a few scenarios I found a ballpark idea pretty fast. I would expect the quality of your troops will influence that as well so no matter what data we start with, you will need to adapt based on a lot of factors and there just isn't going to be a simple answer. I expect i will have a learning curve (that hopefully isn't flat) to know how to most effectively use my troops, how short to set my covered arcs to make the best of ambush potential etc. If you are looking for a targeting bar to show you with a color coded entry over distance how effective your fire will be, I suspect that is a bit much to expect to be coded.
  13. This is the one I am waiting for. Was hoping it was going to be out soon, but just got another delay notice on my preorder. http://www.amazon.com/LIONS-CARENTAN-Fallschirmjager-Regiment-1943-1945/dp/1612000061/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1304629339&sr=1-1
  14. There is a scene in the Spanish AAR showing a rifle grenade being fired from within a house. If the PIAT were modeled similarly it would seem feasible.
  15. Don't forget free love, great rock and roll and psychedelics. The 60's did have quite a few good points. Having been born in the 50's i would say it ain't so bad. Politics is what it is and draws people (at least it seems mostly) that are more interested in the power than any kind of ideals. If they were still idealistic when they get in, that generally has the life span of a Mayfly. The realities of what is possible and what needs to be bargained usually push all to the mediocre. Man when did I ever become so cynical...
  16. This seems to be the latest statement about work on the game (from the UI thread) and it is still in progress. Just told the monkey to take a break for a bit.
  17. *puts on rose tinted glasses* yeah I remember back when men were men and sheep were nervous! yep those were the days. No crime... oh wait there was that guy Al Capone and umm oh yeah Bonnie and Clyde. Course I never got broken into, but I had no TV, no computer, no refrigerator heck probably no phone. Sigh yep those were the days. point is still right though, we humans have an inordinate ability to forget and be forced to re-learn stuff over and over.
  18. Ron White sums it up pretty good "you can't fix stupid".
  19. that link was worth going to just to find this one LOL Star Trek does Monty Python
  20. Thanks to POE I decided to go look...thanks for nothing POE! LOL For what it's worth Erik did intervene on one thread to say exactly the same thing. That being said I fled the forum pretty quick, the general tone over there is so much more harsh and they spend an awful lot of time just bashing CM. Incidentally Steve, one poster has "proved" 1:1 is bad just so you know and can abandon any further work on this project. ;-P It is kind of sad as I do regularly visit some of their other forums (Mandrake's WITPAE thread is particularly fun reading), but for some reason there are a couple PCO posters who are just rabidly anti CMx2.
  21. Granted I haven't been that active on this forum really only since CMBN was announced, but I don't believe in that time I have ever seen anyone attacked just for criticizing the game. Doing so in an off hand flippant manner that is just ridiculously trite however, yeah that is going to draw a reaction. As to the statement that there are fewer people playing, not sure where you are drawing that data, if anything what I think we are seeing on the forum is actually an increase in user response. BFC is making enough money on the game to apparently do okay to the point that they are very happy to continue making a product most folks on this forum are chomping at the bit for. As to your experience with the game, that sounds more like you need to raise some technical questions. For myself the music and animation including camera control are perfectly fine. I have been running on vista 32 on an HP pavilion laptop.
