  1. For urban close combat and assaulting bunkers, they are a huge bonus. Just reading the action in Arnhem and plenty of references by both Germans and British on their use.
  2. Hopefully this doesn't get me dinged- it isn't a game link. http://www.gamersarchive.net/theGamers/archive/tcs/TCSGeneral/Opsheet2.htm
  3. Some guy wrote a mini white paper on writing up op sheets for the gamers Screaming Eagles in Holland. In it he discusses the frontage you should use for your Op sheets and it was interesting in that it was explicitly telling people their op sheets to be realistic needed to define much smaller frontages.
  4. what? Another review? Yawn. Hmmmm take the time to read it or.... go back to a decent book on my kindle that might give me an idea for a scenario? I'll read the book. Even the good reviews aren't all that interesting frankly. As to the overall back and forth, what the hell are you doing reading millions of posts? Damn it Steve, hire some punk intern to read them and respond on twitter and get back to work!
  5. Yeah baby A Steve challenge tournament! Woohoo!!!
  6. My hats off to Tiresias for having his first PBEM appear as an AAR. It might be a little intimidating throwing yourself open to anyone second guessing your tactics, but it is far more appreciated that you allow us to watch the game. Bravo
  7. You know I really do need to finish stomping your stormtrooper wannabees into the mud when I get back. Now THAT is talking s**t.
  8. You guys know far better than me what to expect, but I think there is another curve regarding CMSF versus CMBN. There are folks (myself included) who are particularly intimidated about discussing CMSF. I have not served and there are plenty of folks here who have. I feel pretty stupid trying to discuss tactics or weaponry with those folks with what little knowledge I have and even a bit disrespectful. My total post count pre CMBN - 1 However once we jumped back to ww 2, well I have a decent library there and a little better understanding..and there aren't too many ww2 vets here to tell me I am talking s**t. So my post count has changed. Does that reflect a difference in my regard for CMSF vs CMBN - no way. I still play CMSF and I really really like it - I am just not as active about it. I guarantee I will be buying CMSF2 or whatever it is called and am looking forward to it just about as much as any of the WW2 game families planned.
  9. Some other things Assuming you had your guys hiding and assigned them a target at the beginning of a turn. Give them a pause of 30-45 seconds and then have them move out. This allows you to be out of LOS and LOF by end of turn leaving your opponent nothing to target at the start of their next turn. Once you trip the ambush, there is little to be gained by sticking around. If on the other hand your ambush was triggered mid turn by enemy approaching within your target zone, then issue an immediate move to exit the space the following turn. This is probably one of the hardest things to get used to - knowing when it is time to leave. Generally is it NOW. If you think "well I nailed the team that my unit spotted so I'll hang around" all you have done is given away your position to all the unspotted enemy units with LOF to you.
  10. I found just looking at the hills I would have to fight my way up daunting. Then while moving up you find out that there are areas on the map that effectively put defensive positions in a reverse slope that you can't even see from below. The Troina campaign in particular has some very cool, very difficult uphill fights. One thing I learned - plan your assault carefully and use your trps where you think you are going to need help and that won't necessarily be on the VLs. Look the terrain over carefully, where are your guys going to emerge from a ravine into an exposed location? You have to plan your artillery to support your attack and that means you have to pay very close attention to the route itself. It is a lot harder than figuring out your attack plan in CMBN and a lot less obvious as to where you are suddenly going to be blind sided by an MG. If you don't plan your TRPs right, you are going to have to send your FOs up. In one battle I had my FO killed and had to send up the Company CO who then promply got killed. I finished the battle hobbling along with the XO team in charge with the Wpns pltn HQ tailing along for radio access. It severely curtailed my artillery access. I won't even discuss how bad it can get when enemy mortar fire is raining down on your troops while trying to keep them organized for an uphill assault. I promise, a couple battles in and you will begin to miss the comfort of the hedgerows. LOL And the maps are beautiful. I didn't have the time to look through the quickmaps as much, but I'd highly recommend folks do so. BF and the team keep getting better and better at this. CMFI in my view is not just the CMx2 version of CMAK. I had pretty much just modded that to look like NW Europe. CMFI is a joy in and of itself.
  11. Just wait till you see some of the hills you have to fight your way up. Disconcerting to say the least. The screenshots do not do them justice.
  12. Smoke. LOL no not cigarettes.. of any kind. The problem you are running into is simply any order you give them is likely to be countermanded by their survival TAC AI with all the incoming fire. They need concealment. If you have smoke, use it. Whether it be from the team (the least likely of being successful as they are already having issues) or from another source if you can get it there quick. Once your opponent can't target them, the odds increase dramatically for you to get them out of there. My opponents have taught me to start paying more attention to the uses of smoke in a battle, something I frequently over look. edit:sorry just saw your noting you don't have any. Do you have anything else that does? An armored vehicle, mortar? anything at all?
  13. And I was a little smarter this time. I took 2 weeks vacation after I finished my work here - 1 to visit family and 1 for just me when I get home.
  14. I had the opportunity to play it a bit earlier
  15. Try Bad day at Beach Red as the Italians. Tough and interesting. Playing as Allies is also really good on this one. Hell they are all good, but that is one of my favorites.
  16. As my father would say - Just before the "at". He is a stickler on some english grammar. Then again he'd have likely red inked that whole expression. Driver is probably taking a piss break.
  17. oh man that is so mean. Like kicking a one eyed, 3 legged, recently castrated dog that answers to the name lucky, when he's down. (That was actually off a shirt being sold to some tourists I saw today in New Yawk.) a week. a long week. a week I am actually off work!!!!! oh the inhumanity of it all.
  18. I'm sorry, maybe I missed something. What does your training for bowel and bladder movements (which if I have heard correctly may have been patient and meticulous but ultimately unsuccessful) have to do with a challenge to play ..well umm that old game. Wait never mind, wrong door. Sorry, I'll just let myself out.
  19. Really? You are gonna complain because the pre order folks were given 24 hours to DL first? Seriously? No way. Seriously? The only thing that surprises me is BF is bothering to respond at all. Yeah I expect this will earn me some snippy and maybe even witty retort. Hopefully witty. Please if you can't do witty, just ignore me.
  20. Damn that is what I call fast response times. Very cool ND
  21. I wasn't referring to you rather the OP (sorry, you are correct that was not clear from my post), but before I stated it is crap service I'd try and find out why I didn't get the notice. It is a fair question to BF, but could also have an answer that may not be about them. (and hopefully get it sorted out prior to the next game/module to come out).
  22. Damn I hate when I find out I have been doing things the hard way.. or do i love that I just found out a way to do something easier. I am so conflicted!
  23. And I pre ordered but am on the road. LOL Christ I love folks freaking out because they may have to wait 24 hours. It should be called Crack Mission.
