Meeting Engagement objectives are always somewhat atypical.  We can identify with hardpoints to hold, or swarm in an attack or defend scenario. But what objectives do you fight over when comparably sized task forces go BUMP. on a hill, in valley, in a forest. I think someone has a problem with these.  If you don't have any hold objectives to reach, one of two things will happen: Player one runs straight to the hardpoints and fights a defend battle against an equal sized opponent, of course he wins! Or player two camps back then shoots at anything that moves, wins by attrition.
Units that did meet, whether planned, or unplanned fought each other as the objective, and the need to lay claim to the key immediate terrain features which could change the tide of the battle. A cross road maybe, but also the building that covers the cross road, or the forest that masks the enemy's movements. You can't just say "oh I'd go around the forest, that's not a real objective" Well no, too late. Its a meeting engagement and you have a forest to hold, or a choke point, a hill, or building  because your opponent will do it, if you don't.

MG TOW reacted to nik mond in Is Fulda Gap most likely never in the cards?
Tac Nukes are absolutely moot when discussing a prospective CM Fulda Gap or Reforger, or Gruner Laubfrosch etc. The game would be about the units that are fighting around or through the hot zones. The SOP's were solidly in place for fighting in an NBCW environment as the mentality was nukes were definitely going to be used. The emphasis was on how to adapt and mitigate the loss from nukes in order to carry on with the conventional fight.
Units within brigades were spread out from each other. Always moving. Even defensive units were to relocate in their entirety after a short period of time (German roads were extremely hazardous when Corps exercises were going on). If the balloon went up these units would have operated this way for the real thing. Sealed in tanks, or dug in the ground Top High mode would have kept units with adequate distance peripheral to ground zero combat effective. It would have been rare to see many entire battalions wiped out from low yield tac nukes because of this.  Once contact was made the threat of a tac nuke would be gone for the time being and that is where CM would take place. Direction finding a Div HQ and nuking it wouldn't be all that successful either as these units were sending signals remotely by linked radio vans miles away. Also radio silence and dispatch riders were still heavy relied on even in the 80's.
Yes they were too optimistic with their mobile decontam centers and many soldiers would likely perish shortly after the war.  But I really don't want to go there.  We have Combat Mission Black Sea which featured nuclear super-power adversaries. I don't see nuclear weapons as a deterrent for the original topic here.

Apple would never concede an inch to PC. They also never support a product that they perceive will compete against themselves. Its likely they are looking at the new Metal platform.
I feel an Apple IIGS rage coming on....Arghh! About 30 years ago the Apple IIGS came out, best computer at the time fully backwards compatible with Apple II and used new OS and even 3.5 disks. Apple cut production and support after 2 years. Imagine owning a $3500 boat anchor in 1988. The reason: Apple thought it competed against their own Macintosh. In reality the majority of GS owners moved on to x286 PC's.
That's Apple   great now my skin is turning green and my shirt is ripped.

MG TOW got a reaction from nik mond in Star Trek Continues...
Stumbled upon 3 episodes of this kickstarter series. I am amazed a low budget, volunteer guild of professional 2nd rate actors and producers could pull off even 3 episodes... but they did. Complete with easter eggs ( James Doohan's son plays Scotty, the original Apollo guy does an episode, guest stars Lou Ferrigno, Fiona Vroom (I said 2nd rate).

They nailed the original 1967 series to a tee so well that at first I thought I was watching one of those parodies. But no it was an all serious episode in the tradition of the original Star Trek. The sets look identical to the original, sound effects and instrumentation same same. I have to say, although I like modern CGI effects, the new Star Trek movies are awful, Chris Pine sheesh, along with the totally rewritten ST universe which is no longer relevant to the franchise name anymore. Obviously someone felt disgruntled enough to come up with this Star Trek Continues project.

I caught them on Genesis streams. I hope they come out with more episodes and hopefully more sets. Good Effort.

MG TOW got a reaction from Dave Mackey in Found a Grand Strategy Layer for a Combat Mission Game
So I bought this new $10 game for my PC called Viet Nam '65. I'm not here to plug the game or spam it.  Only to say its small scale and limited complexity would be absolutely ideal if the troop combat took place in the CM2 universe. You basically chopper a handful of platoons, around a limited map, patrol and keep them supplied using said hueys, while earning political points. These points can buy a battery, mechanized infantry platoon, M48's, Arvn yada yada. You get, and can buy more engineer coys to build forward operating bases for your SF units which you move around as a unit as well. Search and destroy NVA units, there's too much to go into. But the entire game only takes about 2 or 3 hours to play on a random generated map. The the scale of the game world would be the perfect grand strategy level for a CM campaign.

This is a great story illustrative, I think, of human potential. Stan Lee himself would be impressed, and he's got a show full
of incredible unique people who can do things so amazing they're hard to think about, never mind see happen and have to deal with those shocks. Let me put this mind boggling deadlift into perspective for you. Arnold Schwarzenegger's deadlift record in his prime was over 300 pounds less, and that's straight from Arnold. Watch Eddie Hall kill it, with Arnold Schwarzenegger totally focused on motivating him all the way.

Of course you are correct. I play only single unit and squad games pretty much on fields that measure in yards to a few miles. So when I come across a game which scopes an AO of 100 miles, to me this is grand strategy  Would love to see a simple strategy layer for combat mission, and VN65 is extremely light in complexity.

For some reason towards the end I threw away any kind of recce, combined arms, patience and sense in favour of being Marshal Ney for a turn. Totally worth it, but my tankers would disagree.

You have a very peculiar conception of grand strategy. I'd say you are still on the tactical level, not even up to operational, grand tactical, or strategic levels yet, let alone grand strategic.

    Part Ten:

During these next few turns not only are we reinforced by our Ukrainian allies but we manage to hold the line and repel the ENY advance.

The Russians make a mad dash with 3 APCs on our right flank but 3rd SQD manages to kill one with a nice AT4 shot while our center LMTV heats up the barrel of his .50 while mowing down ENY ground troops.

Our Sniper and FO team begin to take fire on our right flank and we quickly decide to relocate into both the woods and the building behind.

Unfortunately for 1st SQD/B Team and his accompanying Engineer section, they make a valiant last stand before being quickly overrun by ENY troops.

On the right flank another ENY APC gets danger close to our troops but 2nd SQD makes short work of it with a point blank AT4 kill right into the BTRs flank.

The Ukrainians arrive just in time and I give them their marching orders getting them right into the fight. I move the a rifle squad and HQ unit with their respective BMP transports into the woods on the left flank which desperately needs bolstering. They get into position just in time to kill an ENY BTR dueling it out with our LMTV.

I move the BM Oplot to the center of the map and he begins to engage ENY tanks across the river. The remaining Ukrainian BMP3 is ordered to advance to the right flank.

I have to mention SGT Donahue (Sniper Section) as his superb discipline under fire saves many lives during this turn. He and his .50 cal sniper rifle manage to destroy/repel the ENY APC advance.

    From an ongoing scenario...

Meet Captain Maksym Kyrychenko. The remnants of his tattered line company are attempting to strongpoint a series of forested hillocks outside of Stara Basan. Attrited by the devil's luck slugging of RUS attack helicopters and SPA, his men inhabit the fringe between despondency and the need for retribution. In these images, Kyrychenko's BTR-70K and his attached US liason team pull their vehicles off the road as the battalion net spits and hums: local air defense warning - attack imminent.

As the LADW comes down the line a UKR mech platoon relocates their mix of vehicles under the canopy in an effort to conceal themselves. In the bottom image, a UKR soldier reacts to the thump of rotor blades and the stacatto reply of small arms in the distance while frantically offloading ammunition from his squad's IFV. The platoon's sister company is being consumed. The Bear is coming.

800 meters north of the UKR FEBA a pair of BRM-3K's push hard into their next position and disgorge their recon teams.  The shock and violence of their supporting arms and the recon company's own resolute pace of manuever has fractured the UKR lines throughout their area of operations. The ineffectual response of UKR counter battery fire and the flickering resistance offered by opposing ground forces affords testimony to their sobering efficiency.

Elsewhere, the command element of the RUS assault recon company sends its dismounts forward for a last minute appraisal of the line of advance.  Jointly, the cramped interior of the pictured BMP-3M thrums with activity as the platoon CO and his attached air controller labor to synthesize the encrypted traffic from their forwardmost units and the live video stream from a skyward Zala UAV. A pair of inbound Mi-28N attack helicopters skirting the treetops will herald the company's entrance onto the battlefield.
