  1. since we are on the whining mode, i want the following or else: - Medics - Tractors - Horses-drawn Field Kitchen - Sniper Platoons and throw in a couple of Babuskha,Commissars, Einsatzgruppen and other assorted civilians while you are at it... ..... Let it rest already! [ June 09, 2003, 02:49 AM: Message edited by: laxx ]
  2. hi, sorry for the late reply. have been playing intense cmbo (14 scenarios in 3 weeks PBEM) during work hours against a friend.... no updates on the Vehicle Database. if there is enuff interests, i will update the data to the latest 1.02 / 1.03 stats. As for pictures, my take is that becoz of copyright, it is not appropriate for me to put them into the database. Unless someone tells me otherwise. cheers!
  3. this is so funny. i started regressing to cmbo becoz my pbem opponent is still playing cmbo. and i find myself overly cautious in CMBO, eg. i like to hide my troops alot more often, i doan rush tanks like i used to do before and i am more careful about hq units. perhaps, i am learning, but more likely, i am just applying cmbb tactics into cmbo. My opponent, on the other hand, likes to rush into the action, usually with predictable results. another thing, i stopped using smoke, never really used it in cmbb anyway....
  4. dang...my ignorance on US/UK tanks is glaring.
  5. Hi, i started out in CMBO and CMBB. I am a reasonable player on German forces and genreal afv usage (I like the Hetzer best together with the Nashorn in a keyhole manner). I have started playing the allies but i have alot of questions. This is a quick question thread as I am playing against my friend in CMBO PBEM. Can someone tell me: * How to win M1A1 against the Panther ? Do the rules of CMBB T-34 apply to the sherman ? * Is there an equivalent of the T-34/85 in CMBO ? * Can I use the M10 like a StuG IIIg ? ie. Flank, Rear shot. Short range than long range. I noticed that it kills panthers. * VC, Cromwell, Firefly etc. What is the story with these tanks ? are they unique in any way ? * lastly i played a scenario in CMBO in which 12 shermans were lost to 3 panthers (elite). What do you think could have helped to make it easier to win ? some of the ideas i have which are not tested out: (a) tank rush ( better coordination with Troops. © keyholeing ? thanks [ May 20, 2003, 06:25 AM: Message edited by: laxx ]
  6. nah... you are just paranoid. you doan rush your guys enuff
  7. Very good posting from all. Thanks. A couple of questions and observations: a. after playing exclusively Germans, I have started playing Russians. So far, not too much success against the AI in Armor MEs or Attacks using Nippy rules of not using KVs and only t-34s sparingly. b. Could someone comment on the other light armor, in terms of "fightability" ? I have given up on t-26 tanks as they are too brittle. c. Or is it simply that Green, Light Russian Tanks (BT-5, BT-7, tankettes, T-26, etc)were simply outclassed by the PanzerJaegers, the Pz IIs, 38ts and Somua tanks of the early days of the wars ? And it *has* to always be flank, side and rear shots ? Thanks ps. I am having a blast as Russian Defense 300 points. Almost always, total victory with green russian troops, support and ATGs. I suspect that the ATGs can shoot better with TRPs even if the target isn't near the TRPs.
  8. great, we just made a normal 16 year old turn into a potential grumpy grog-wannabe.... ..... kid, better watch out, this is gonna be one hell of habit to kick.
  9. i have been playing/learning the russians for the past few weeks. i have found a sweet spot for 300 points russian defense versus german probes (AI): date: well i played from june 1941 to feb 1942 russian: mech or infantry (Low) german: combined (Medium or high) rarity: standard or none noon. map is either moderate or sparse trees, hills moderate or gentle slopes buying russian: - Normal or SMG platoon - 2 to 3 Tank hunters - 1 HMG + 2 LMG - 1 x 75mm AA or (if rarity off) the 8x mm AA - maybe 1 or 2 45mm ATG - 2 x TRP I usually hide everything until the enemy is quite near and the smg (around 100m) can reach them. At this range, i position the TRPs about 200 - 300 meters. The MGs are interlocked between the troops. Hide, hide and hide until the germans crosses half-way through the open stepps, then the dilemma for the troops to either run forward or run back. My observations: - as this is pre-43, all the German tanks are quite susceptible to the 75mm atg gun. usually at close range, one shot is enuff to penetrate. Unlikethe 45mm which takes forever. - Tank hunters make great forward defense, nothing ruins a 222 or 251/10 than having a green tank hunter worth less than 10 points killing it. Tank hunters work in pairs and they are equipt with SMGs, quite lethal against troops. now, if only i have had success with the russian tanks compared to the ATGs....
  10. hoo..i am in agreement with all of ya, especially Hans. I like to play small battles 300 to 500 points with large maps. at 300 points, every single equipment counts, and there is little wastage. Some hard decisions have to be made, like get a sniper or a motar. And german half-tracks seem expensive... a question to ask, is at 300 - 600 points, do you guys play combined arms or unrestricted ?
  11. Grrr......typical russian ending...Grrr Grisha, thanks! more please
  12. hi, if anyone is interested. Pure ASCII Format for MobiPocket star.PRC Pure Text Format star.txt Html Version (but alas without the Index) I tried to create a full featured Mobipocket version with links and Table of Contents using mobipocket publisher, but the dang windows emulator kept crashing on my mac. So I gave up.
  13. rescue of the duce by otto skorzeny...how would they model the duce ?
  14. could agree more about the t-26, the 45mm looks impressive until i find that the quality of the regular tankers or the quality of the rounds are bad. quite a number of shattered rounds or misses. i tried to play a balanced game of 5 PzIII and 14 T-26s. lost all the t-26s. perhaps using it as a better armed half-track would be more apt. 15. somehow, i found these text sometime somewhere last year and put them on my server. Interesting articles on Afrika Korps: http://www.web.ms11.net/retro/Life_In_The_Desert.txt ..."The type of vehicles used by the Germans in the desert were the same used in other theatres but unlike the Russians the British tanks were in general inferior to German machines. The German MK III and MK IV were used which outgunned the British Crusader, Valentine and Matilda tanks and the formidable 88mm anti-aircraft gun which was used for the first time in the desert could destroy British tanks from great distances. Other light tanks such as the Pz kpf I and II Panzers were also employed in the early stages and although outgunned were light and fast and proved useful reconnaissance vehicles."..... http://www.web.ms11.net/retro/Afrikakorps_Infantry.txt ..."Interview with an Afrikakorps Infantry Veteran by Martin Schenkel. This interview was done on January 23rd, 1999 by Martin Schenkel with a German Veteran known as OberschŸtze Siebenbrot. He served in North Africa during WWII in the Wehrmacht Heer. In this interview, Siebenbrot first explains his wartime experiences and then responds to a number of questions asked by Martin." ..... http://www.web.ms11.net/retro/Afrikakorps_Panzer_Veteran.txt ..."Interview with an Afrikakorps Panzer Veteran by Jeff Scott. The following memoir was written from a series of audio tapes that wererecorded by Willy before his death a number of years ago. Some place names may be incorrectly spelled, and various minor corrections and additions have been added by Jason Pipes, as indicated by information inparentheses. The following is an interesting mix of biography, memoir and diary entires based on Willy's experiences during World War II. It serves as a powerful testiment to the entire range of experiences and emotions of a German Soldat, from the monumental to the mundane, and from the joyous to the terribly upsetting."... http://www.web.ms11.net/retro/Nachrichten_Veteran.txt .."Memoirs of a Luftwaffe Nachrichten Veteran. The following was written by Hans Thielemann, a frequent visitor to the online forum of this site. Hans served during World War Two in the Luftwaffe signals branch, in a Nachtrichten unit. His story is an amazing one, and one straight from the heart. In this brief overview of his life Hans recounts a variety of emotions and recollections, and provides a valuable glimpse into the experiences of many men during the period. Hans ended WWII in the Kurland Pocket and was one of the lucky few to make it home alive from Soviet captivity."
  16. Nippy, playing russians, I find the Nippy Challenge a good guide, any further updates to the scenarios ? Cheers!
  17. Hans, It was 2 x T70 and 2 x T34 vs 14 Pz III. As for tactics, it is easier said than done to get into flank and rear shots, especially on broad maps with shallow depth. I have recently started playing the Russians, and I am mucking around a good tank combination for pre June 1942. Yesterday nite, I played 1941 September Quick Battle, a 650+ points with T-34, multiple T-26s, T-60, BT-7, BT-5 and one KV, all regulars. On the German side, Pz I and IIs, all regulars. All about 7 - 10 on each side. I split 2 force, one hull down frontal, the other to do a wide flank. The short of it is that, I find the Russian tankers not too experienced in 1941, and the saving grace is the kv tank which kill all except 1 Pz.
  18. I tell you: Combat Mission is a Cult My work mates think I am a bore because I keep talking about it, and trying to convert them over to CMBB. My Son likes the Sturmtiger versus poor saps hiding in wood huts, i think its the explosions that he likes. My wife thinks its alright coz I spend time at home rather than out entertaining clients (hey, biz is so bad with the SARS situation, so get off my back!). Every smoke break is a mini-sitrep on how to beat my pbem opponent. and now, the yearning is building up for CMAK. ps. MG42, what's a Barbie Explorer ? Is that a Game or Simulation ? 19. hi, i like the maps and the explanation of the movements. well done!
  20. okay, I have gotten a generic OS 9.22 cd, and I got a Mac testPro CD but this is a Feb version. Apple will give me a copy of MacTestPro sometime in the next few weeks. Better to restate the goals ---------------------- Background: ----------- New Macs cannot boot up to OS9 as they are "OSX" only. While you can run Classic mode under OSX, CMBB won't run. A generic OS9 CD won't boot under the new macs. Goal#1a ---- To create a OS9 cd which can boot up in the 2003 G4 Macs. Goal #2 ------- To install OS9 from the CD into a partition which can be booted up with out the CD. Goal #3 (optional) ------ To investigate how best to install OS9 co-existing with the OSX partition.
  21. hi, interesting topic. i played a recent scenario with 14 t-26! against 5 panzer III long nose (regulars vs regulars). the t-26s died horrible deaths to NO detriment to the Pz III (i think they were J models). These were at most 300-400 ranges. This game was supposed to be "balanced" with 600 points each. So i thought I would upp the T-26 to a late model with better armor. They too died easily. Only when I scrapped the T-26s and went with 2 x t-70 and 2 x t-34 did I managed to get decent results. an off-topic question: anyone here like the Pz II Lynx ? It appears only in later part of the war but the 20mm is usually relegated to anti-personnel roles.
  22. bump bump and bump. was looking for this thread for a long time.
