  1. no promises, but i will try this as a side hobby, getting the newer machines to boot 9.22. Gyene: thanks if you have, send it my way. In parallel, unknownst to everybody, i am a partner in an Apple Centre here in Asia, so I can probably get the CD as well. laxx
  2. **** spoiler alert ***** With the facinating inputs from you chaps, let me muddle this a bit, how would you defend against the Russians in Yelnia Stare ? Would you defend a line, defend all the flags or create multiple depths with Recon/Security Element, MLR and possibly a SLR ? laxx
  3. hi, i bought a couple of russkie planes, one being an IL-2, the other i forgot, but the results were spectacular. I believe the IL-2 has rocket abilities, and it stopped one stug and one Pz IV, disabiling the tracks cozing it to be abandoned.
  4. actually, i want to highlight a good article on defense: http://www.combatmission.com/articles/Learning/learning.asp though it is for CMBO, i am sure it applies to CMBB as well.
  5. hi, a. um...if the qb against the ai or a human opponent ? b. i am a newbie CMBB player, but here are my comments: - if you are playing against an AI, one characteristic is that attacking the russkies in one Victory Location will lead the bulk to that VL. - are the flags the same size ? most often the more important locations are indicated by the larger sized flags. so defending those would be more important. c. instead of looking at the number of VLs to defend, i would rather position the troops for optimal location to destroy the (a) tank assets like the heavy KVs or Flame tanks FIRST ( HQ units next followed by the © bulk of the troops. d. the other tip i know is that german ammos runs out pretty quickly, so hide all your troops until the enemy is near (i have achieved less than 40 m before my troops opened up). this way, the russian will break and panic. Long distance attrition is no good except for artillery.
  6. It dawned on me that different time-frame requires different tactics. Eg. Pre-June 1942, Russian Tanks ruled. Infantry tactics were important, and flank/rear shots were quite necessary but difficult to achieve in one player QBs because of the elongated rectangle maps. I played a TCPIP QB with Faustist (hi!), and got my tanks badly mauled by a lone KV. My Somua and PzKpfw 38 kept pinging to no avail. My troops were too far away to lob the anti-tank Grenades. In retrospect, I should have kept the tank away and do a flank to destroy other Anti-tank assets, and HQ company. Nevertheless, I can't help but think that not being able to disable the KV effectively lost the game. anyone remember a post which details different QB force mix (what to buy for AI and yourself) for newbies (like me) to test, i remember one for defense, one for attack.
  7. My 2 cents worth: - i have no hang-ups on not being able to run CMBB under OSX. CMBB series came around before OSX was fully adopted. - How can it be reasonable for Apple to support retro-API when they have fully endorsed OpenGL as the Graphic standards ? How can it be reasonable for BFC to rewrite the game engine as a stop gap measure before CMXX version 3 comes out ? - So what can we do about it. Buy a PC ? Not for me coz I am a fanatical mac fan and doan endorse microsoft. Well, the other choices are: to run under OS9, it is NOT that hard to reboot, it is Faster than emulated mode. What about newer Macs who cannot boot OS 9 ? Well, it is possible to boot OS9 on the newer macs, you just have to replace the software ROM in the OS9 to make it work (quoted verbatim): "Apple recently posted a new file to its private Apple Service Provider web page (accessible only by account-holding Apple technicians and resellers) titled "MacTest Pro for Power Mac G4 (March 2003) Version 7.8.1 supports all iMac (Flat Panel) 15 inch systems only." The file is a CD image which can be downloaded and burned, then used as a startup disk. Testing in "Mac OS X-only" flat panel iMac system revealed that the image properly booted Mac OS 9. Users can then copy a stripped-down Mac OS 9 system folder to their hard drive, and select it with the "Startup Disk" System Preferences pane, delivering a Mac OS 9 bootable internal disk. It appears that a new MacOS ROM file (ver. 9.8.1) allows booting from the image. Of course, this solution is only readily accessible by Mac service providers, but it shows that Mac OS 9 boots are not impossible on Apple's new machines. " Now, if this is a Problem for those out there, let me Offer this to ya: I will create a bootable CD for OS9 for newer 2003 Macs out there. Now OS9.22 is freely downloadable from Apple, so there is no copyright issues. With this CD, one could boot and create your own Bootable OS9 partition. Any takers ? Currently, ASAIknow, only the PB12, PB17 and the dual-mirrors cannot run OS9. cheers!
  8. may be off-topic, maybe not....with spoiler alert ahead...maybe not: ---------------------- - There is a scenario where a company of Tigers try to enter a town infested with well armed IS-2. THis is a good scenario in that IS-2 will win quite easily but with tactics and less bogging, the tigers could win as well. As for IS-2, i never like the concept of a lone IS-2 or Tiger for that matter to go up against an enemy tank. I changed tactics to always have at least a pair of tanks when engaging, and i tend to place them very closely so that both will have LOS at the same time. cheers!
  9. David, 2 comments here: a. just when you are comfortable with winning, try the other side. try playing with rarity on. b. if you are using the cds as coasters, can i get it off you ? i would very much like to give it to my friends. laxx
  10. Australians and Kiwis in Combat Mission, hmmm.... most fascinating, now put another shrimp on the barbi.
  11. pple. give him a break, afterall , 65% win-rate on the ladder is not too bad, but like every community, we have the meek, the trolls, the verbal and even the proud, let the sane man have his own thread, tnt-chunking or otherwise. [ April 06, 2003, 12:00 AM: Message edited by: laxx ]
  12. nora jones with sitar background, complete with incense burining and tantric atmosphere.....seriously, with modding, anything is possible. guru swamy "puppchen"
  13. coe, doan think there were panther or king tigers in 1943 desert war....so start focusing on tactics instead of buying uber tanks all the time, you newbie.... (joking, no offense intended)
  14. yeah...no dogs with magnetic mines please (i hear SPCA are quite militant these daze), also, no field-kitchen please. [ April 02, 2003, 12:27 PM: Message edited by: laxx ]
  15. JasonC, Excellent AAR, as usual, the difference with your AAR is that you provide the rationale for executing the tactics, for alot of students/players of CMBB, this is very useful. I was thinking yesterday, why not put AARs into a downloadable Database like UCMBBVDB ? the database could be a collection point of the Scenarios, Text per turn, Graphics per turn. Of coss, one question is what is consistent across all AARs ? Well, - Title of Scenarios - Scenario itself (downloadable) - Stats like date, whether etc - Force Composition (yours) - Intelligences gathered - Turn: Turn number - Turn: Saved Game (Downloadable) - Turn: Text for Turn - Turn: Graohics (May ne more than 1) - End: Stats - End: Comments The idea is a Book Metaphor, where topics could be Types of Scenario (like Terrain (urban, steppes etc) or Attack Type (Axis Probe, Attack, Assault etc) or even via date (to track historical scenarios). Chapters could be either be AARs itself. The whole database would be read like a book, Left-side is text, right side is Graphics. Let me know if this is a good idea, I may want to create a generic AAR DB for players to start recording their memorable AARs. If you are agreeable, I could use Duck Factory Town AAR as the Reference case laxx
  16. interestingly, the main points to me when I read the first post were: - doan forget the support group. focus on the purpose, then the composition, and work out the movement order with the appropriate terrain - use a squad level recon/protection to scout - hq support units should be 100-200 yrs/metres away from the main group one of the maps I have been using is the Ponderosagrad (Axis Attack) found in map pack 1. nice map to practice Heavy Support Group.
  17. mastergoodale: wah ? can't handle more than one pbem game ?
  18. MasterGoodale, send a pbem my way (laxx@myrealbox.com), i love the smell of TNT in the morning... laxx btw, i have not played a pbem before but i am pretty shure this veteran newbie will whup your a** [ March 28, 2003, 11:27 AM: Message edited by: laxx ]
  19. jasonC, excellent. i am printing this out for a detailed analysis of your work....
  20. Sublime: from the little i have read, russia did not have co-ordinated combined arms in the early stages, it was common for tanks to go their way while troops attacked with their own manoeuvres. so with that, i think pre-late 44, i will start engaging with tank platoons and doing 2-prong attacks or some other fancy movements, anything but long direct frontal engagements.
  21. this is somewhat related. for tank movements, I like to move them in pairs, really closed, side-by-side together. this gives me a better chance against anti-tank guns or other tanks. AI does not team up tanks so closely, so chances of multiple enemy tanks targeting your tank is low.
  22. i am a veteran newbie..... pls send a pbem my way, this will be my first pbem.. i prefer to play german, around 1000 size force (or smaller), and small/medium map... no preference in scenarios...
  23. sublime: yup...late 1944, around oct-ish onwards, are the 85m and su-100 available. between the 100 and 85m, i like the 85m coz it stores more rounds than the su-100. however, the blast tends to be quite spectacular against light german tanks.
