  1. theike, please check your sources, i do not think you can edit saved games.
  2. nothing like a rush of infantry against an IS-3. or you could get a bunch of anti-tank rifles and "ping" the IS-3 to death. The effect of the ATR on the IS-3 is negligible but it irritates the hell out of your human opponents. seriously, the IS-3 made very little showing at the last stages of the war. so to have a bunch of IS-3s storming berlin is stretching it a bit.
  3. *** off topic *** JonS: porn in WWII ? you mean girlie paintings ? or just lurid novels ? most fascinating....
  4. Kirill, you shure about that ? i never heard it before...
  5. hey, i'll play with ya, send one my way to laxx@myrealbox.com with the subject header PBEM. i do not have much preferences, except that doan make the game too big. so 300 to 800 points would be great.
  6. good reading stuff here! one side effect is that my 4.5 old son knows the difference between the elefant tank, StuG and Hetzers. It was really funny recently when my wife complained that my son's holiday homework of "Treasure Hunt" consists of a T-34 drawing on a deserted island...
  7. guderian, Do play the most excellent scenario Chance Encounter in CMBO as Allies. After you have beaten the SMG and StuGs to pulp, play the scenario Chance Encounter in CMBB (download from CM Scenario Depot) as Germans. Without too much difficult, you should be able to win in both games. After that, play CE-CMBO as germans and CE-CMBB as Allies Good news about CE is that there are numerous write up about the scenario, how to win, how to overcome the opposition. When I first started CM, I printed out all the various AARs to learn...
  8. Jack, (reference to the first post), when i started playing CM, i was very reluctant to lose troops, or to abandon them. Later, when i started playing PBEM daily (sometimes, 3-5 turns a day), it dawned upon me that winning the overall misson was more important, no matter how painful it was to watch a whole squad or platoon wiped out. by now, i am quite jaded in sacrificing a half-squad or half-track out for probing exercise even though i mite not see them back alive, posthumously, they will receive a medal. to quote a dictator: to lose one life is a tragedy, to lose a million lives is a statistic. guess war is hell [ June 25, 2003, 01:06 AM: Message edited by: laxx ]
  9. hey, email me too at laxx@myrealbox.com, spent the good afternoon readying up on how to defend a drift, now to spend some time on Bowler Hill.
  10. From the original post, if it is against Anti-tank assets like pillboxes, ATGs and trenched troops. It would be quite logical that motars and arty are the rule of the day.
  11. fooled me also, until i read the subsequent posts... the telltale sign must be the TCs. looked abit too pixelated.
  12. gee, i can't wait to play yelnia stare or even chance encounter II on Combat Mission:1812!
  13. hee hee, the battle of Tusk. A Panzer III vs. Walrus-34 with a 20mm/L10.
  14. Hi, I have a question of how much to defend on a broad front. imagine, wide (800-1200M) front, with a flag in the centre, flat ground with some clumps of trees scattered around. I have SturmKompanie as Defense and one or two ATG. The enemy is two normal US companies with AFVs. Question: should i defend around the flag to facilitate better co-ordination? or should I spread the defense into far left, centre and far right, and even perhaps split-squads fox-holed as my MLR even though the enemy may just penetrate one sector. I think the question is How much ground should I defend.
  15. not exactly as fantastic as the scenario above, but yesterday in a PBEM CMBO with an opponent, I killed 3 Hetzers and Disabled one Panther in a turn. Sort of ruined my opponent's whole game. This was accomplished by T-10s and a ATG (57mm I think). Before , two panthers and 4 hetzers were prowling and giving me problems. I think timing is everything, when the moons align and the atg appears as well as two tank platoons with good covering arcs jump on the enemy, the rewards are very satisfying. (Btw, this was a 1000 point ME with modest hills and scattered trees)
  16. i am no expert but the following micro-level stuff works for me: * buy green SMG troops because they are cheap and straight shooting doesn't need veterans * instead of fighting by attrition, hide your troops until the enemy is at the doorstep. The SMG blast will most likely route the first batch of attackers. (i have achieved contact as close as 20 meters in Yelnia Stare as Germans) * buy Anti-Tank Gun and more importantly, buy Target Reference Point (TRP). They are give high accuracy when used properly. * I like the earlier suggestion of ambush-fall-back, and I am gonna try it, but I fear that the loss of the fox hole protection negates the mobility. hope it works for you.
  17. i doan think the 4MG half-track is featured in CMBO. thanks
  18. I have a question on tactics here: I tend to play cautious and like to set up ambush zones. While my opponent tends to be more aggressive and impatient. Do aggressive players tend to lose more ?
  19. i got stuck in my system of playing a consecutive month (say June 1941) every other day and progressing up the calender. after so many "real" months, I am still stuck on 1941... the t-26 looks attractive at first because of the 45mm guns and cheap. but they are so brittle. only thing about early war which drives me crazy is the constant ATR pinging and not being able to pinpoint the shooter.
  20. with my untrained eye, my guess on the AFV are: - ferdinand on the centre-left, - behind the ferdinand is a t-34, dunno which model - dunno what afv on the right foreground with a prominent cuppola, looks like a panther ? - right background is a t-34
  21. dang, that Hill 211 picture reminds me of the canvas memorial painting: i can't wait! ps. Trivia Pursuit Question: How many tank can you identify in the pix ? [ June 16, 2003, 12:49 AM: Message edited by: laxx ]
  22. hi Major, I am no expert on german troops but the following has worked for me before, so your mileage will alway vary: * Troops selection, sturmcompanee. at 700points regular, this uber company is the original Stormtroopers , as each squad has 13 men, has 2 LMG, Panzerfaust (or is that 'shreks) and quite importantly, MP44, the Original assault rifle. Disadvantages of the Sturmcompanie are: relatively expensive, and ammo runs out too quickly (unless you do a full ammo load out in the scenario maker). Having said that, SC is best used when setting ambush points and hiding until the enemy comes really near and then the MP44 will be deadly. * Of coss, if the terrain is a dense one, you should consider buying Heavy SMG platoons, the submachine guns work wonders in close quarter fighting. But unlike the MP44, the SMG range is usually about 100m. and they also use up ammo like water. * Tanks: Forget the fat cats like tigers and/or Panthers. I like Hetzers mainly because they are cheap and they usually firefirst and they have 3 MGs. But because they are turretless, do not use them alone. I like the gamey approach of using 3 hetzers rolled into one tight formation, and by tight, i mean to turn the unit visual scaling down to realistic and pack them as into a V formation. Hetzers should be used not for stalking but to ambush enemy tanks, especially lone ones. * The above is great for destroying tanks. Another approach is to buy Nashorn "Rhino", this tank is thin skinned but has a powerful 88mm gun. I usually use them to hide among scattered trees, buildings or other keyhole positions. If you have a choice buy Vet or Crack. They can do wonders with the 88 Gun. * Of coss, if you are in a position to buy Target Reference Points (eg. Defense, or customised in Scnario Maker), do so. As your tanks /arty will be even more accurate. cheers, hope it works for you.
  23. actually, i have never seen 4+ companies together in a scenario before. how long did the computer take to process that turn ?
  24. slightly off-topic but in a recent QB with a PBEM opponent, I had a Jeep with a mounted .50 mg kill a Hetzer. my jeep was hovering in the rear trying to smoke out the enemy hetzers, while in the front my M10s where waiting. Well there was a shooting match between one m10 and a hetzer, i ordered the jeep to shoot at the hetzer's rear. I had to look at the jeep kill stats to be shure that it was confirmed kill. Interestingly the hetzer did not bother to use the rear MG against the jeep, probably busing with the m10 in the front. hooo!
