  1. Commercial CD duplication is done by stamping the disc, only consumer level duplication burns the disc. That's the extra physical wear and tear. So, on a "from the store" CD there are actually pits in the CD/DVD while "from your cd burner" you get a disc with burned spots in the dye.
  2. I have to admit it's been a LOOOOOONG time since I've downloaded a game, but 2 gigs?!?! Surely you jest?! </font>
  3. Gface, oh you're absolutely right about the value of the pre-order and that the thread took on a life of its own.
  4. Ummm, didn't you start this "I can't wait!" thread? </font>
  5. Hi Scott, those that pre-ordered will get to D/L early by a couple of days. I figure that - given my predictions for the # of pre-orders - those of us that pre-ordered will get the download finished by the 19th if we start downloading as soon as they let us. Here's hoping they've got a lot of bandwidth and robust servers!
  6. Heheh - I'm just glad that it'll be out when I get my wisdom teeth out (Wisdom teeth, 18th - preorder download, some time before that from what I can tell)
  7. Basically, the real-time mode is just what it sounds like. CMx1 stops every 60 seconds to let you plot your orders for the following 60 seconds. In Shock Force you can choose to play that way, or you can play in real time (with arbitrary pausing allowed, I believe). WeGo mode even gains some benefits from having RealTime available. Maybe the easiest example benefit is that "in flight" fire at the end of the turn will pause and then resume at the start of the next turn (in CMx1, end-of-turn artillery just keeps going after the 60s). Beyond that, the forum search is your friend
  8. As far as I know, quick battles are in - it is just map generation that isn't. So, as I understand it, the QBs have to take place on existing maps. That's ok by me
  9. I might be in the minority, but the details on the flexibility of the objectives and the ability to set them up asymmetrically is more exciting than the screenshots Though the screenshots of the objectives actually is pretty helpful in visualizing it.
  10. Blogfront entry on Objectives That is just excellent, excellent information! I'm drooling over the scenarios possible with these
  11. The requirements 'game' has gotten so fun these days... The Intel Core 2 Duo is the reigning processor champ for desktops. It's faster per clock than the Pentium 4 and offerings from AMD. A 2Ghz C2D is faster than a 2Ghz P4 (substantially so). The iMacs, Macbook, Macbook Pro and Mac Pro all have C2D processors and should be fine (though the graphics cards are always questionable). The Mac Mini is probably out, both because of the processor (only a Core Duo, not C2D) and because it uses an integrated graphics card.
  12. A perfectly valid solution flamingknives, just really kills the immersion factor
  13. Hmm... I like your idea, Other Means. Or combining both ideas: larger than playable area the ability to actually move into those "off-map" areas, but with growing casualties and/or VP loss cost. Make the cost relative to time and quantity of troops "off map", so that you can't just take the VP hit to move your forces through terrain they shouldn't be in. With the right balance, I think it could provide playable map edges without the gamey-ness. Well, just a thought off the top of my head. Feel free to poke holes
  14. I'm with rudel Ok, well maybe 1 step down, but by the time CMSF is out who knows
  15. That's why I said I hope I didn't butcher it too badly I should have gone more abstract - basically the player can direct units that have no way to share knowledge to cooperate as if they did have shared knowledge. That is, the God's Eye View. I think the question was more along the lines of "...will limiting the accuracy of out-of-LOS arty continue to be the method to limit the impact of the God's Eye View." 'Course I could be wrong
  16. Thermopylae, I don't think that's at issue but the issue that could be exploited is more like this: 6 - to himself - God I wish I could contact someone to let them know that I need fire at 123 456. ... some time passes ... Rounds come in! 6 - to himself - Damn, someone read my mind! Because you as the player would know that there is a target for Red 1 to fire at, Red 1 could fire without anyone lower on the chain calling for that fire. Hope I didn't butcher the example too badly, but that's how I see the gamey-ness working Granted, that's no different than in CMx1, but the question remains will that still be there in CMx2. I don't really see how it couldn't be, but maybe they got sneaky
  17. You know, I had a hunch that was going to be the reason. I was hoping that it was something plausible but misguided rather than just tossing out a lesson learned.
  18. How novel. This quote stuck out because I'm currently reading 3 books about D-Day and beyond. Of relevance to this post, one of the communication improvements made was putting phone boxes on the tanks. I shamlessly admit that I have no idea why that wasn't a feature carried forward (ubiquitous radios?). Can anyone shed some light?
  19. Heheh... welcome I'm really looking forward to this game. I had, when I heard about this as WWIIRTS, been impressed by the visuals but not terribly interested in the RTS aspect (at the time equating the RTS playstyle with games like Warcraft, Command and Conquer, etc.). After reading about it here from the BFC guys and and yourself, I'm excited to see that it's more a real-time wargame and less a warcraft with tanks
  20. Brilliant! So.... are we there yet?
  21. Someone had to ask it In the E3 footage that was posted in http://www.battlefront.com/discuss/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=63;t=000048 there's a shot of a truck or halftrack driving around a burning wreck. We all know how much fun playing a traffic cop was in CM, so the question is - are our soliders in ToW better drivers?
  22. In 31 days (if they release 2 a day, every day) we should know what it is, heheh. Unless they get tricky and release variable amounts or skip days. I like vincere's idea, even though the graphic file names go with their grid
  23. While either approach is reasonable from a business stand-point, I feel like the route you've taken is a good approach to garner customers (and customer loyalty). The other seems only to emphasize potential short-term gain. I mean, the question didn't even apply to me and yet the resolution makes me want to buy things from you guys. You guys are great
