1.
quote:
Originally posted by Jarmo: Testify! Testify! I tried this scenario again about a week ago. I managed to get all three Stug's in a perfect hulldown position. A single Sherman stumbled into the ambush... It was unreal, Flam! Flam! Flam! Three dead Stugs! Most of my shots missed, the rest ricocheted. And no, it wasn't even the Sherman+, just a plain stupid M4A3.

LOL!! I've had one recently that was about as bad. It was in a large city setting and three shermans are advancing up a street in "hunt" mode. A StuG appears approximately 2 blocks up the road from my pack o' tanks. The shermans get a couple, three shots off, missing each time. The StuG pops some smoke and destroys LOS the remainder of that turn. Next turn, the smoke dissipates and there are now THREE StuGs in front of me: Bang "PLANK"; Bang "PLANK"; Bang "PLANK". All Shermans dead, all StuG's alive and well..LOL!!! This was the A freaking I !!! I have never seen the a/i put together such a coordinated little combo like that before, and it surely was a freak thing but I couldn't believe it!!! I guess the only point is there is a big "sh*t happens" factor modeled into the game and it's one of the things that adds to why it is such a great pastime.
2. Storm, The method I told you has resulted in wins without loss of tank, and sometimes with loss of one tank. The only fool proof way to keep from losing a tank is to keep it out of line of signt the entire game and never use it. If you get the things into a hull down position with as much firepower concentrated on one spot as you can muster, your chances of surviving with minimal loss are good.
3. Leave 'em be. It DOES keep them in one place and off the rest of the board and worth the bandwidth waste for that reason alone.
4. SPOILER ______ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ During Setup, set the Stugs to your left. There's a depression on the left side of the map, somewhere to the left of the church (It's been a few since I've played this). It is a perfect hull down location for the stugs. Once you get the Stugs in that location, and have them rotated towards the area between the edge of the woods and the crossroads, you can plink off every Sherman as it comes away from the cover provided by the woods. Incidentally, that scenario is a good one to practice obtaining hull down status. With the infantry, run the vast majority of them into the woods on the right, just inside the treeline fronting the allies' side of the map. Move the remainder of them to the woods behind the church. After you're taken out the Allied tanks, send the troops from the woods behind the church forward into the open, with your Stugs covering them. Also, with the infantry in the woods on the hill on your right, start advancing them, en masse, leaving only MG's in the edge of the woods to provide cover. Allies will break and run from that side somewhere around the otherside of the wheatfield. Then pivot the entire group towards the woods on the left and clean out the allied troops in those woods = total victory. [ 04-26-2001: Message edited by: Agua ]
5. I was struck by the treeless map as well, but on closer inspection, you can see shaded areas which represent woods or scattered trees, or at least that's my take on it. I believe that for purposes of providing the screen shot, Catnip just hit Shift/T a few times to provide a picture without the trees.
6. Couple of things here. On some puters you have to press shift/prnt scrn/alt at the same time, on others shift/prnt scrn, on still others, prnt scrn is sufficient. Then you have to paste it in MS Paint. If that doesn't work, I don't know how to help ya. (see how easy it is to not say "do a search"?)
7. Yeah, I got one for whoever out there who has never been beaten by the a/i. It's on the Der Kessell site and the name of the file is blackshear.cmb. That should humble a few folks. Play blind as allies. No restarting the battle or nothing. No need to give bonus to computer. Enjoy [ 04-24-2001: Message edited by: Agua ]
8. There's so much coming out, we're going to need a site with a spreadsheet devoted to the sidewalk sale.
9.
quote:
Originally posted by Heinz 25th PzReg: Hi What kind of player would cheat in this manner, and why the hell do they do it? <snip> Cya there, Heinz [ 04-20-2001: Message edited by: Heinz 25th PzReg ]

Agreed. What sort of enjoyment would someone get out of playing a game like that? Maybe its a ladder thing.
10. post your email or send me an e-mail, and I'll send them to you. I don't know where, or even if, they are published on the web with the sudden closing of so many sites.
11. Pud, Could you make one sort of dark-greyish (just pickin')
12. Just to add, GonzoAttacker has put together a batallion-sized scenario named "Knockemalldown" which depicts Aachen. It does an outstanding job of simulating the brutality of urban fighting. It is VERRRY, VERRY good, difficult, lots of surprises, and the a/i does some rather surprising things in it. It is in playtesting right now. If you enjoy Aachen ... Look for it whenever it's released.
13.
quote:
Originally posted by MrSpkr: Ack. Whats the url? MrSpkr [ 04-19-2001: Message edited by: MrSpkr ]

TheBlitz Actually, there's a little more to it than just what is posted on that board, but I can't really say where the additional info came from. Hell, maybe its all false and the poster on the board just got the info from the same source i did.
14. Just read a rumor over on theblitz board that Talonsoft is terminating all projects, will all developers being let go. I guess wargame sales are hard on a mass marketed basis. All the more reason to support BTS.
15. Assenois (Belgian CM site) involves a thrilling calvary-like charge portraying Third Army CCR's 12/26/44 relief of Bastogne. From what I have read, it appears to provide a pretty accurate OOB (including undersized infantry companies)and map. Please note that EVERYTHING on that site is high quality, but as far as absolute favorites, Assenois stands apart from the rest. A Long Cold Day - CD The Patrick Ware Mini-Campaigns (I think I like "No rest" slightly better for presently unarticulated reasons) A Small Town in Germany (Play as Canadians) - Part of the ASL Scenario Pack CE - as Germans [ 04-18-2001: Message edited by: Agua ]
16. Can't wait to try this one. Is it simply overwhelming in sheer numbers or what? I really enjoy a scenario that kicks my ass as long as it's not vs. overwhelming numbers.
17. Thanks Tom, but I've done searches with "movement + distance", "movement + travel", "time + travel", "unit + distance", "unit + movement", "movement + minute", "travel + minute", and though probably two hundred threads have come up, I haven't found it yet.
18. Would anyone be willing to try testing out various units under varying conditions so that we could compile a movement/distance table? When we publish the thing, everyone who contributed will be credited. Don't you think this would be a pretty neat tool to have? Nothing elaborate, just take all foot and armour units and determine the distance it can travel in varying terrain under varying conditions. It's really a huge undertaking for just one or two people, but if, perhaps 20 or so folks got together, we could put the thing together. I've got a standard map downloaded from the CM Mapcase site that is fairly small and has about every physical feature in it you could imagine. If anyone is interested in trying to do this, just post here or e-mail me (agua@bellsouth.net), and I'll see about assigning groups of units. Thanks all, Agua
19. Thanks Enoch. Don't suppose you'd try to do a movement table under varying conditions (i.e., American engineers / damp ground conditions = 28 meters / minute). It's a huge undertaking. I started to put this together but just got overwhelmed by the size of the project. One difficulty is you have to eyeball how far the unit travelled, requiring replay after replay. Maybe there'd be some interest in a group of people, each taking just a few units, and trying to put together such a table.
20. Sure. The Sgt.'s platoon are all elite and crack units, so they do some pretty amazing stuff against the Germans in this scenario. I'll send it to ya as soon as I get home from work. Over,
21. There are at least a couple of small "Kelly's Heroes" scenarios which were created by the same person. I think they're simply named "KH-1" and "KH-2". They're pretty fun. I can't remember who created them. Also, though not a "Movie", I believe Wild Bill Wilder did one derived from an episode of the old TV series "Combat". The scenario is also called "Combat!". Another fun one. Even further astray, someone also did a night scenario conceptually based on the comic book character "Sgt. Rock", whereby Rock (promoted to Lieutenant) and his platoon take on an armored batallion. The Scenario is also named "Sgt. Rock", and again, I do not know remember who created it. Another highly entertaining scenario.
22. The KT works fine. Just buy the game. Probably the best return on your entertainment dollar you will ever realize.
23. No problems with ME at all. Same video card (64mb) as well.
24. Spike, Great idea, but Admiral Keth has already compiled an archive. Check in this forum "Scenario Talk" for his post (within the last two weeks, I believe), and you will find where he has posted a link to the file for download. I believe has has obtained every scenario/operation on the last edition of the CM Database, except for 28 cmb/cmc.
